FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING

ANNOUNCEMENTS THANK YOU THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE PARENTS! -- Third and Fourth Grade parents provided dinner for the Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Concerts. These families helped raise raise important funds for the programs supported by the Edison PTA. They also gave the families attending the concerts the opportunity to break bread together and added to the enjoyment of special evenings. Thank you to all the families that contributed, cooked, or served food!

ONLINE HOLIDAY GIFT FUNDRAISER WITH NOVICA -- Novica has jewelry, home décor, apparel, paintings and many more items – all handcrafted by talented artisans around the world. We did this fundraiser a few years ago and the Edison community loved finding holiday gifts on their site. This is a special campaign that NOVICA is setting up exclusively for Edison: 40% of your purchases will go to the Edison PTA this week. Our Edison page on NOVICA is located at: http://www.novica.com/edison/ NOVICA is a fair trade company associated with National Geographic. What could be better? You support global artisans. You give fashionable jewelry, decorations and gifts that everyone is going to LOVE. Plus, 40% goes to support our school. Shop this week! VALENTINES DANCE -- Planning is already underway for the Edison Valentine’s Dance on February 12th, 2016. PTA stages this event primarily as a fun, community building evening. and they are asking for parents’ help in the following ways: 1. If you frequent a business or work at a business that is willing to donate a service, a gift card or a prize item for our Valentine's raffle, please contact Victor Komlos at vkomlos@gmail.com. 2. If you are interested in being part of the planning committee for the dance, contact Jan Chantarasompoth, VP of Special Events, at jchantara@gmail.com or leave a note in the Valentine's Dance mailbox (in the mail room) with your contact information. We will plan to meet the first week of January.

We’ve been working this year to reduce the amount of waste that Edison sends to landfills -- increasing recycling on campus, and teaching students to think more consciously about reducing their waste. I’ve written before about the Trash Free Lunch Challenge that we’re working on with Grades of Green and I’m happy to report that we’re making good progress with our recycling stations. Students are helping each other sort trash, and we’re directing more waste to compostable and recyclable barrels. Families who send lunches from home have been great about moving toward trash free lunches too. And SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services has agreed to get rid of the ubiquitous “spork packages” (a spork, napkin and plastic straw all bundled in a cellophane wrapper). Beginning in January, plastic forks or spoons will only be put out for those meals that require a utensil and napkins will be in a dispenser to be taken if needed. Plastic straws will no longer be available. And the little cellophane wrappers will be a thing of the past!. Once our campus is finished and we have the edible garden established, we also hope to begin composting so that students can get a first-hand look at how compostable waste can decompose and be turned into mulch for the garden. Before you head off for winter break, please visit the Edison Lost and Found. We have enough jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes, plastic food containers and reusable water bottles to open a small store! Before you buy new sweatshirts or lunch boxes to replace lost ones, come and see if your child’s items are waiting for you here at school! We will be donating the unclaimed clothing in January so that we don’t add to the 10-13 million tons of textile waste that Americans send annually to landfills. Not only do textiles take up lots of room in landfills, but decomposing clothing releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to global warming. And clothing has are dyes and chemicals in fabric that can leach into the soil, contaminating both surface and groundwater. During this gift wrapping season, Grades of Green asks that we spread the word that if everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or fabric gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks! When giving gifts this holiday season, minimize your environmental impact by wrapping gifts in wrapping paper from previous years, the comic section of newspapers, or even kids’ artwork! Also be sure to save and reuse all bows and ribbons for future uses. Here’s to a greener New Year!
