ANNOUNCEMENTS January Activities on Campus – January is a busy month as we close out the first semester! Our teachers are collecting and scoring writing samples and administering reading and math assessments to measure student growth during the first semester and plan next units based on student needs. We’re focusing on character development in our assemblies th on January 7 and holding our annual Kindness and Justice Challenge in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during this month – challenging ourselves to thoughtfully carry out acts of kindness and justice at school, at home, and in our afterschool activities. There will be some planned substitutes on campus during this month as teachers administer 1:1 reading assessments (primary), work together to analyze assessment data, and participate in some district professional development work (differentiating for advanced learners, working as a professional learning community, and using new Chromebook computers we’re receiving in all our upper grade classrooms). Don’t forget to mark the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 19 on your calendars as the school and child care programs will be closed. This replaces the ELAC meeting previously scheduled for Wednesday morning, January 14. School Smarts Parent Academy: We’re currently recruiting for the Edison School Smarts Academy, a seven-week intensive program that will help parents learn more about how to be effective advocates for quality education for all children. The Academy will begin in early February, meeting at the time most convenient for the parents who register. Fifteen parents have already registered and spaces are limited, so please contact Yoly ASAP if you’re interested or respond to the flyer enclosed again with this Wednesday packet. Kids in Dynamic Shape Program – This seven-week, free program begins January 15 at Virginia Avenue Park. Sexual Development and Behavior in Children th Wednesday, January 28 , 2015 from 8:30am-10am in Room 208 Shuli Lotan, LCSW, from Family Services of Santa Monica will be talking about sexual development and behavior in school-age children; where what is normal, what is concerning, and how to talk about it. As school-age children begin to grow, they also begin to have curiosities about bodily changes and sexual matters. For many parents, talking about this may feel awkward or uncomfortable. Being able to provide children with accurate age-appropriate information is key to ensure children grow up safe, healthy and secure. If you are interested in learning more, please join us. Interpretation will be provided.
