FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: SAFETY One of our most important responsibilities is to provide a safe environment for all our students. So we spend time at the beginning of every year reviewing safety procedures and going over safety rules with students. While we can’t bubble wrap our students, clear expectations, learning to using equipment safely, and playing games with a set of common rules goes a long way to minimizing the inevitable bumps and scrapes of childhood. To make sure we stay safe in emergency situations, we practice monthly safety drills. This week students learned to duck, cover, and hold on – which is what they would be called on to do in the event of an earthquake. They also practiced evacuating the buildings quickly and safely as we might need to do in the aftermath of an earthquake or in the event of a fire. We practice in silence so that children know that in an emergency they have to be able to hear their teachers and other adults that are working to keep them safe. Later this month we will practice a Lock Down Drill. On September 28, we have our annual Safety Assembly. SMPD School Resource Officer (SRO) Beatriz Gutierrez comes to talk with the children about pedestrian and bike safety, keeping safe around strangers, bullying, our rights to privacy in our bodies, and how to let people know if something makes us uncomfortable. Finally, make sure you have a clear understanding with your child about what they may and may not do after school. Every year it seems that there’s a student who decides to arrange an impromptu play date with a friend – without clearing the plan with his or her parents. It can be truly terrifying! Children should only leave campus with people explicitly authorized by their parent(s). If your child carries a cell phone to check in with you after school, remember that you must sign a waiver in the office or the phone can be confiscated. And even if you intend to pick your child up every day, consider signing up for Playground Access so that if traffic slows you down, your child has a safe place to play and wait for you. Working together we can keep our students safe and secure!
