Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org

ANNOUNCEMENTS SMALL VIRGINIA AVENUE PARKING LOT – With the exception of the Handicapped space and the two spaces labeled 10-minute drop off for PreSchool Parents, all other spaces are assigned as staff parking. Too often, staff arrive to find that a parent has parked in their spot. Since students are waiting for them, they will be parking behind you if you take their space and you will have to wait until that staff person has a break to get your car out – and that could be several hours. Parking is tough, but please don’t park in the staff spaces. PARENTS SINGING CIRCLE – Come and join other Edison parents/families for the Parents Singing Circle with Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes on Friday mornings from 8:30-9:30 am in Room 109. This is a lovely way to learn Latin American songs and connect with other families through music. You do not have to speak Spanish to participate – but it will help grow your Spanish skills if Spanish is your second language! Thank you Edison PTA! CORO EN ESPAÑOL – The 3-5th grade Spanish afterschool chorus with Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes will be starting again on Monday, October 1 from 3:10-4:10 pm in Room 107. Enrollment is limited to 35 students. Complete and return the flyer in the Wednesday packet if your child is interested. If there are more than 35 students who sign up before the due date, preference will be given to students in 3rd grade since they do not have another choral music option that year. Thank you Edison PTA! PRE-K THROUGH 2ND GRADE MÚSICA EN ESPAÑOL PROGRAM resumes this week on Mondays and Fridays with Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes. Our youngest students all have a weekly music class to develop rhythm, vocal skills, stretch their Spanish vocabulary and learn some wonderful folk songs from across Latin America. Thank you Ed Foundation! PLEDGE DAYS This is one of the very best weeks to donate to the Ed Foundation and the Edison PTA. Through Saturday, September 29, Santa Monica Place/Macerich and OneWest Bank will match your contributions, up to $50,000. And, all Edison families who donate by that day will be entered to win a Family Four-Pack to Pacific Park!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: SAFETY AT AFTERNOON PICK UP Thank you to all the families who have shared ideas about how we can increase student safety and arrival and departure and still keep our family friendly Edison community. Given our staggered arrival and dismissal schedules, the multitude of afterschool options on our campus, and the fact that we have back and front gates, it’s not easy to enhance safety for kids and still preserve an option for adults to walk on to campus at arrival and dismissal. The goals are to reduce the amount of time our perimeter gates are open and improve our ability to monitor who comes on to campus. Our Safety Committee, in consultation with PTA, has been reviewing ideas from staff, parents, and SMPD. We have developed a couple of afterschool pick up options that we are trying out this week – using our interior gates to create parent waiting areas and attempting to preserve an option for parents who still want to walk on to campus to pick up students. Thanks for being patient as we field-test some options. To give our Safety Committee more information about how adults access our campus, there is also a survey coming home in this week’s Wednesday packet. We ask that you complete and return it as soon as possible so we have the best information possible to work with. CREST enrichment classes have started and some meet at the picnic tables in the lunch area, so this is no longer an area where parents can wait for students at pick up time. All TK and K students who are not attending CREST classes or Child Care will now be walked to the courtyard (where you drop them off in the morning) to meet families there. 1st-5th graders have more options afterschool – child care, CREST, Crest Enrichment, Playground Access etc. Those that are enrolled in child care or CREST will be met by those staff members. During 1st-5th grade dismissal times, parents who walk on to campus through the Virginia gate to pick up will wait for students in the main courtyard. Parents who use the Kansas gate will be wait under the shade structure just inside the gates. 1st-5th grade students whose parents either use the drop off zones will go to the pick-up zone that you told them to use. They will wait there with either Sr. Valdivia (Kansas gate) or Sra. Rodriguez (Virginia gate) until 15 minutes past their dismissal time. Then they will be taken to the office to call you or be sent to playground access. Wednesday, Wednesday, October rd October 3rd 3 Young Story PTA Board meeting Tellers begins for 6:00 pm 5th grade 12:30 p.m.
