ANNOUNCEMENTS

EDISON PARENT SURVEY – Last call for parent surveys! We would love to hear from all our Edison families as we start planning for next year. YEAR END GIFTS TO EDISON PTA AND TO SMMEF – It takes a village to raise a child – and it takes a village to raise the funds needed to support instructional assistants, PS Arts, on-line learning programs in reading and math, Spanish music, supervision and drop-off staff, field trips, assemblies, and extra art supplies. Please give what you can to safeguard these programs. You can donate on-line at www.smmef.org, or leave a contribution in the Edison Office. Contributions to the Edison PTA can be made on line at www.edisonamigos.com (click the fundraising tab and Direct Donation) or by writing a check to Edison PTA and leaving it in the office. th FOOD SALES AT OPEN HOUSE – Thanks to 4 st grade and 1 grade parents, we had two very successful food sales at our Open Houses this year! Together the sales raised about $2,000.00 for the Edison PTA. They also gave us a reason to break bread and have a cup of coffee together. Thank you so much to all the parents who contributed, prepared or sold food! JOGATHON PRIZES – Thank you to everyone who raised money for our school in the 2016 Jogathon! Together our school collected more than $13,000. Tshirts and prizes have been delivered to students and we’re gearing up now for the fabulous “ Limo Lunch” to be held June 8 for top earners and students who were selected in a drawing of all participants. Congratulations to: Henry Kress, Dawson Garland, Jordan Gil, Prudence Currey Schafer, Danny Hedges, and Brendon Aronin. IMMERSION SENIORS CELEBRATION -- One of Edison’s most wonderful traditions is that we host a celebration for graduating immersion high school students. It will be held this year on our campus on Saturday, June 4 from 1:00-3:00 pm. The Edison PTA offers four scholarships – three for former Edison students graduating from Samohi and one (the Miguel Martin Scholarship) for a former Edison student who has completed his or her studies at Olympic High School. This year we are pleased to recognize: Gabriela Ruiz, Evelyn De Arcos, Beverly Ramos and Misael Solorio. It’s a special reunion for students and families – most of whom started out together in Kindergarten – and all are welcome! Thanks to Aida Díaz for organizing this event.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE In just a few short days, Edison students will begin their tenweek summer vacation from school. While many children will be engaged in some type of formal or informal learning during the summer, over 100 years of research shows that without some effort, children lose both math and reading skills over the summer – sometimes as much as two months’ worth of skills! The first 6-8 weeks of school are then spent recovering what was lost over the summer. You can help prevent the summer slide by following a few of these simple suggestions to keep literacy and math skills growing. It is important to keep children reading regularly over the summer. High interest materials (magazines, graphic novels, comic books, serialized books in their favorite genres, books on e-readers, and reading together) are all good ideas. Check out summer reading programs at local public libraries or organize a book club for your child with his or her friends all reading the same books and getting together to celebrate when a book is finished. Set goals for reading equivalent to at least six good-sized grade-level books over the summer and have them read something at least five days a week. And include a little writing in their literacy diet by having them keep a summer diary, write a weekly note to a friend or relative, or create their own comic book. Edison pays for several on-line reading and math resources for our students to use over the summer to combat the summer slide. Their accounts on these programs should be available until early nd th August. Students in 2 -5 grade have access to KidBiz (Achieve 3000) for non-fiction reading selections in English and Spanish. Edison nd students in Kindergarten through 2 grade will have access to Spanish reading selections in Raz Kids. All our students have access to their ST Math accounts this summer and the teachers have put the entire curriculum for their grade level in the homework folder. So unless your child is one of the ambitious students who finished the entire grade level curriculum this year, they will have plenty of new material to keep their math skills growing. Students in grades 2-5 also have access to math facts practice through Reflex Math accounts. Your child can access these resources on-line through a computer or tablet at home, at the public library, or anywhere else you have access to the Internet. They have their own passwords to access these resources and if you are unsure about how to log on, please check with your child’s teacher. While having fun this summer, let’s avoid the summer slide so students can start strong on August 22 when we welcome them back for a new school year!
