We have several fruit trees and room for many vegetable beds. There’s a shaded teaching space for lessons in the garden and the opportunity to create a program which will allow us to enhance Health and Nutrition Education and further enhance our STEM program. If you’re interested in collaborating with the school in the development of the garden, please join us for a meeting Wednesday, May 31 at 8:40 am in the Edison cafeteria. We’ll need parents to help with an initial garden design, create and prepare planting beds, start a composting program, raise funds for garden supplies and volunteer in the fall to work with classes as they garden. If you’re interested, in helping us start an Edison Edible Garden, please join us! FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE Without the structure of school – with daily reading and math practice – over the summer many students lose several months work of skills that they’ve worked hard to learn over the school year. The summer slide means that teachers have to spend precious time at the beginning of each school year re-teaching things that students learned the past year before they can move forward with the next year’s learning goals. Students from families of limited economic resources tend to lose even more progress because they often have less access to reading and math programs, books and libraries. Fortunately, Edison students have easy access to many good free summer learning programs both through our school and the amazing Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL). SMPL has a free summer reading program called Build A Better World! with a kick-off program with magic and comedy at the main library at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 10. Go to the library main web page to check out the many free workshops, storytimes, and classes being offered at the different branches. Our Pico Branch offers free workshops on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m, and other classes (coding) and even a Pokémon Tournament on other days. All are free but space is limited, so register in advance. Call Vanessa Alvarado at 310-458-8684 for more information about Pico Branch activities. Use the list of recommended books in English and Spanish at https://smpl.org/By_Grade_or_Age.aspx to help shape your child’s summer reading choices. Make sure your children use Edison’s on-line learning programs this summer. Student accounts for RazKids/A to Z Learning; ST Math, KidBiz/Achieve 3000, Reflex Math, Discovery Education, and Lexia Reading are available through July. These a tremendous resources for “right-there” reading and math. Use them as many times a week as possible so your children can read or practice math with these resources. Your children’s same logins and passwords are the same. Also, beginning this week, check outside the library and pick up a copy of a reading anthology for the grade your child will be entering in August. We have a new reading series for next year and are retiring our old books, so our students have a chance to see the levels of text they’ll be reading next year. Help them use these resources and let’s turn the summer slide into the summer surge! ¡Adelante Edison!
