FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: WINDING DOWN THE SCHOOL YEAR As I write these lines, we are 18 days away from the end of the school year! Teachers are finishing up year-end reading, math, and writing assessments and students are wrapping up final projects and reports. Third and fourth graders have finished state testing and 5th graders took their science test this week -- and then it’s just make up exams for anyone who was absent. Some grade levels will have teachers out of the classroom for a day or half day over the next two weeks as they conduct 1:1 reading assessments or score math or writing assessments. This is one of the best ways for us to measure student reading growth. Some will be out to score year-end student writing samples so we can examine growth in their writing skills. We ask for your understanding and support of this assessment time. There are also lots of culminating projects and concerts in the next two weeks and we hope that you can join us to celebrate your children’s accomplishments. Preschool, TK, Kindergarten and First Grade children are all having year-end music informances in Room 109 with Maestra Jacqueline on Monday, May 21 or Friday, May 25 (your child’s teacher has details). Students are finishing up some lovely visual arts projects with Maestra Martha Ramirez. Fifth graders are heading to LMU for an up-close look at university life and an engineering activity arranged by LMU Professor and Parent Site Council Member John Zimmerman. 5th Graders are also finishing up their Science Fair projects to share with their parents the morning of June 1st and starting to prepare for their promotion ceremony on Wednesday morning June 6th. Third graders are putting the finishing touches on their Wax Museum performances to be given on Thursday morning, June 7 right after drop off. If you’ve never seen an Edison Wax Museum, linger a little and interact with the “live exhibits” in the Cafeteria Courtyards! It’s a wonderful event – in English and Spanish. On Saturday, June 2 Edison hosts a unique event – an Immersion High School Graduation celebration for parents and students who started off at Edison together 13 years ago. We keep in contact with a lot of our former students -- they come before and after school to volunteer, help out at community events, visit former teachers, etc. But some have moved away and we’ve lost touch. What makes this celebration so special is that most of these young adults and their families reunite to share the highlights of their years as immersion students and tell us about their plans for after high school. It’s a moving celebration of roots and wings and a real family feeling. Join us if you can!
