As we were cleaning up at Noche de Cesar Chavez, there was a little group of children helping themselves to coffee at 8:30 at night. I told them that it wasn’t a good idea and that it would make it harder for them to fall asleep. I tend to worry about how much sleep our students get, so I did a little research about sleep recommendations and the role of caffeine on young children. I’d like to suggest that we all work together to make May a month when all our students get plenty of good sleep each night and avoid caffeinated beverages. 

Supporting Children with Friendship Challenges, Part 2 – A Continuing dialogue on May 3 at 8:30 am in Room 206 with members of the UCLA School Function Project. All welcome!

Are You Returning to Edison in 2017-

18? Last Call!! We are starting the process of configuring next year’s classes and we need to know if your child is returning. Please turn in this form ASAP. Edison Jogathon – What a wonderful event! Thanks to PTA Board Member April Fields and Maggie Zimmerman for organizing and to all the other parents who stepped up to help. We appreciate former parent Alex Reyes who was our DJ and Yoly Gutierrez who kept the kids smiling and running. Now comes the important fundraising side of this event – if you choose to participate, it’s time to collect the money pledged for all those laps and get it turned into the school by May 10 for consideration for prizes.

Noche de Cesar Chavez was fabulous with an amazing dinner prepared by parents from the Edison ELAC. Congratulations to Maestra Jacqueline nd rd th Fuentes and the Edison 2 graders and the 3 /4 grade afterschool chorus for their beautiful concerts. nd Thanks to our 2 grade teachers Maestras Jimenez, Martinez and Melendez for coming back that evening to support their students!

Most experts agree that elementary school-age children need 10-11 hours of sleep a night. Assuming that our students have to wake up at approximately 7:00 am to get to school on time, that means they should be going to sleep at 8:00-9:00 pm each night. Going to bed is not the same thing as going to sleep. Monitor how long it takes your child to fall asleep and if they are having difficulty going asleep after you put them to bed. Then see how you can reduce television and other screen time in the evenings, cut back on their caffeine consumption, provide a cool, dark place for them to sleep, and establish regular sleep routines. Sleep deficits reduce children’s ability to learn. When children do not have enough sleep, they are not awake enough to attend to information they’re supposed to be learning, Their knowledge acquisition is impaired and their ability to retrieve information is reduced because what is learned during the day is consolidated during sleep. Some of what looks like inattentiveness, disorganization, moodiness, and irritability may be due to sleep deficits -- and sleep deficits can lead to all of the above. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that negatively affects children – more so than adults. It is a diuretic and can lead to dehydration (be careful of caffeinated sports or energy drinks – water is better.) It increases heart rate and blood pressure, can affect your appetite, make kids hyperactive and exacerbate anxiety issues and heart arrhythmias. It also contributes to sleep problems. Caffeine is not only in coffee, but in many teas, sodas, and sports/energy drinks. Not only do these drinks deliver more caffeine than is good for kids, they are often also filled with sugar, which leads to obesity and diabetes. Finally, if they are drinking caffeinated beverages, they’re not drinking the milk and water that are better for their growing bodies.
