Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org
ANNOUNCEMENTS Noche de Cesar Chavez and Family Movie Night were both held within six school days (interrupted by Spring Break). They were two of the best-attended and most joyful events I’ve seen at Edison (and we set the bar pretty high on amazing events!) I am so grateful to the parents of ELAC and the Kinder Committee for giving our community these gifts! PTA Association Meeting – Wednesday, April 25th the PTA Nominations Committee will present the slate of nominations for the 2018-19 PTA Executive Board. Nominations will also accepted from the floor. At the same meeting, Site Council will be soliciting parent input as we update and revise the Site Plan for next year. Come to Room 100. Frozen Yogurt Fundraiser – PTA will be selling cups of frozen yogurt on Tuesday mornings before school for $2.50 per cup. The treats may be picked up afterschool on Wednesday afternoons beginning at 3:15 pm. Proceeds benefit the Edison Community Support Network. Yogurt must be purchased ahead of time; no sales on Wed.
Ed Foundation Annual Wine Auction Fundraiser – On Sunday, May 6 at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows, there will be 30+ unlimited tastings, desert, and dancing and some spectacular live and silent auction. See smmwineauction.org. Proceeds from this fundraiser provide essential staff and programs for students in our Santa Monica-Malibu public schools. Purchase your tickets today. Congratulations 5th Grade Mathletes! -Thanks to Maestra Murcia who, on her own time, has been training a group of 25 fifth graders before school for most of the year in math problem solving. As a result, Edison was able to field two teams of five students each in the Mathletics competition in Culver City last weekend. Great Work!!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: IN THIS WEEK’S PACKET Please check this week’s packet for a form titled Are You Returning to Edison in 2018-19? We’re asking that you let us know if your child (currently in Kindergarten through 4th Grade) will be returning to Edison next year. We hope that all our students will be continuing on next year, but sometimes plans change, families move, or occasionally families conclude that their child might need to study in one language not two. We already have applications for new admissions at many grade levels, but we don’t begin that process until we know the plans of our current students. As we start to think about next year, we also consider how to build balanced classes. The same form allows you to let the school know if there is any confidential information you want to share that might affect the placement we make for your child. Your input is important to us, but please keep in mind that families do not select their child’s classroom teacher. Please let us know your plans by returning the form titled to the office by April 26. Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast -- The Edison staff greatly appreciates our many wonderful volunteers and we’d like to thank you by sharing some breakfast treats on Wednesday morning, April 25th in the breezeway (the area where we usually have cafecito. Please linger a little while at drop-off and let us thank you for all the things you do to make Edison the place that it is! It takes a village to raise a child and we are so fortunate to have a great village! Olweus Anti-Bullying Survey – One of the programs we use to help children become Upstanders and not Bystanders to peer aggression is the Olweus AntiBullying Program. Like all SMMUSD elementary schools, we survey 3 rd-4th-5th grade students each year to get an indication of how that program and other Edison efforts are impacting students. It takes about an hour to administer and student responses are completely confidential. While we hope all children in grades 3-4-5 will participate, there is an opt-out form in this week’s packet in case you do not want your child to participate. That form is due to the office by April 24; the surveys will be administered between April 25 and 27th. National Student Walkouts – There is another student protest against gun violence scheduled for this Friday, April 20 at 10:00 am in 2,000 locations across the US. It is on the anniversary of the school shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado that cost 13 people their lives. Most of the organizing for this walkout is aimed at high school students. In elementary school, allowing students to walk off campus alone is not a safe way to participate in these protests. If you as a parent wish to sign your child out and take him or her to one of the protest marches, that is your right although it would be an unexcused absence. In age appropriate ways, we will be teaching civics lessons that day, including the right of Americans to share the things that are important to them with their elected representatives and to ask their representatives to share what they are doing on those issues. Site Council Meeting – April 18, 4:00-6:00 pm
