School Site Councils are required by the California State Department of Education (CDE) for public schools of Edison’s size and is given the task of developing the annual School Plan for Student Achievement. This plan must be based on student achievement data, input from all school stakeholders, and be coordinated with the District’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The Council also must develop research-based strategies to achieve the plan’s goals, allocate financial resources to implement the programs, and monitor progress toward meeting these goals. It also approves our School Safety Plan. The Edison Site Council is composed of 10 members elected to two-year, staggered terms– five elected parents and five elected staff members. Current parent members include: John Zimmerman (Chairperson), Daniela Morato (Secretary), Gina Engler, Liz Kok and José Cervantes. They are joined by Vice Chairperson Elizabeth Ipiña, Principal Lori Orum, teachers Aida Diaz and Constanza Murcia, and classified staff representative Geralyn Goodman. Over the next few weeks, Site Council is starting to gather the information needed to look at needs for next year – analyzing mid-year assessment data, and gathering information from stakeholders. As part of this work, Site Council is also undertaking two important tasks: The Annual Edison Family Survey – will be sent home on Wednesday March 6 to gather family feedback on a variety of ways that Edison involves and communicates with parents. Please return your survey before March 27 so that parent input can be part of our planning for next year. Site Council Walk Through – On March 18, parent members of Site Council and the PTA President and ELAC Co-Presidents spend half a day visiting classrooms to see the strategies and programs funded through the Site Plan in action. One of the important strategies in the SPSA to increase student achievement is to invest in on-going professional development of teachers. As part of that work this year, we’ve invited two important researchers in our field to come and share the results of their longitudinal studies of dual immersion as compared with other program types. Drs. Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas from George Mason University will be visiting Edison on March 20, sharing research and visiting classrooms. As part of that day, we’ve also asked our guests to provide a symposium geared to parents and invited guests at 8:30 am in the Edison Library. Translation will be provided. Please join us for this unique opportunity to hear two of the most prominent researchers in the area of dual immersion and engage in a question and answer period.
