EDISON JOGATHON IS COMING APRIL 3! Get ready for this healthy and fun Edison event. This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for our school – raising funds to support commitments PTA has made for programs this school year.

Last week, Edison presented its 5th grade play, Cambia Todo Cambia. The play is the culmination of six years of weekly Teatro en Español classes which enrich students’ Spanish language skills, develop their confidence, and improve their understanding of storytelling and writing. The ambitious scope of the play always blows me away – two hours of 71 students in acting and singing parts in two languages! Every student has multiple roles. Our theater teacher Martha Ramirez-Oropeza has written a piece of theater that fits our school and its mission so well. The play illustrates how different cultures have used theater to tell stories that showcase important values. And these six acts illustrate some of the most important social justice and socioemotional lessons we try to teach our students:  The power and grace of humility (Ketzalcoatl),  The willingness to sacrifice to help others (Prometheus),  The importance of telling the truth (The Boy Who Cried Wolf),  The danger of letting hate triumph over love (Romeo and Juliet),  The importance of taking a stand and fighting for justice, (Emiliano Zapata), and  The evil of hatred and discrimination (Anne Frank). The theme of Cambia Todo Cambia (anchored by Mercedes Sosa’s deeply moving song of the same name), is woven throughout the play. This song also reliably makes the adults cry as we see the growth and changes in the children. The students push themselves and support each other and by the end of the play they are an even more tightly knit cohort. Thanks to Maestra Martha, Maestros Morales, Murcia and Naranjo-Badillo, and the parents who helped with production, costumes, and stage managing. And we are so grateful PS Arts and to the Santa Monica Education Foundation for supporting this program that complements our dual immersion program in so many important ways. The play was videotaped and there will be a link to it on YouTube in case you missed it!
