FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

ANNOUNCEMENTS th

4 Grade Climate Strike – As part of Edison’s Kindness and Justice Challenge, students are studying people who have made a difference in working for social justice. Classes have also been conducting action and outreach projects. Two of our 4th grade classes have been studying Climate Change and the ways that Greta Thunberg has pushed leaders to pay attention to this issue. Their action project is to try to educate the members of our Edison community about Climate Change by participating in a modified version of Greta’s School Strike. Students are not leaving campus, but at drop off on Friday mornings they are standing with signs to teach about Climate Change. You may want to interact with these students on Friday mornings and ask what they’ve learned. Edison 5th Grade Play – Many of you have been coming to campus to attend final theater informances. Our fifth graders, as a culminating activity after six years of theater instruction, present a full bilingual play – complete with music, dancing, and parts for 70+ students. As of today (March 10), we plan for the play “La Gran Carpa Edison” to be performed for students on Wednesday morning, March 18 and on Thursday evening, March 19 for families (6:00 pm call time and 6:30 pm performance). 5th Grade Collecting Books for Libraries in Puerto Rico – 5th grade classes are still collecting new or gently used children’s books in Spanish or bilingual books to send to libraries in Puerto Rico. Please bring any donations to Yoly’s office.

COVID-19 UPDATE In public health emergencies, California schools follow directives from State and County Departments of Public Health and the County Offices of Education. With respect to the COVID-19 virus, these entities provide regular briefings and updates for schools and direct what measures should be put in place to prevent or mitigate the effects of COVID-19. When to cancel events or close schools is determined by public health agencies. Because are no identified cases of COVID-19 in our community, schools are focusing on prevention measures and preparing for mitigation measures. Nurse Rachel has briefed all our teaching staff about best prevention practices and provided teachers with informational materials to use in teaching children about the COVID-19 virus and how good hygiene practices can reduce the spread of the virus. We’ve altered our schedules so that classes leave a little earlier for lunch to permit supervised hand washing before lunch and we’ve asked teachers to make sure that handwashing is also encouraged throughout the day. Before the run on hand-sanitizer, our PTA also purchased hand sanitizer for classrooms. Our cleaning and disinfecting schedule in the evening hours for surfaces has been increased and all teachers have been provided with cleaner for tables and other high touch areas as needed during the day. Children exhibiting even mild symptoms of flu-like illnesses (fever and a productive cough) are being sent home and must remain home until fever and symptom free for 24 hours. The district has plans in place for deeper disinfecting should we have cases of COVID-19 on our campuses and for what to do school closures are ordered. At this point there are no recommendations for cancellations of events or field trips; the recommendations are made by public health. But there are district protocols in place if events need to be post-poned or cancelled, or if schools are ordered to dismiss or close. What you can do right now to help keep your child and all children safe - Make sure you and your children wash your hands with soap and water before coming to campus. Remind children of good hygiene practices. Don’t send children to school (nor come to school yourself) if they your child has fever or a wet, productive cough; continue to call in student absences with the type of illness. Clean and disinfect regularly touched surfaces at home. Health officials still recommend flu shots to protect yourself and others from the flu, which has similar symptoms to COVID-19. Use reliable sources like www.lacoe.edu or http://publichealth.lacounty.gov. Check the SMMUSD website www.smmusd.org and watch (and listen) for updates from Edison.
