Mid-year Progress Reports went home last Friday and I hope that you have all had a chance to carefully review the work your child has done in 1st semester. Teachers administered 1:1 reading assessments (and at some grade levels also administered computerbased reading assessments). They reviewed writing portfolios, looked at scores on math assessments for patterns of strengths and weaknesses, and reviewed student progress on the on-line academic support programs used by students. You also got updates on attendance, sportsmanship and participation in PE, citizenship and work habits and for 3-5 graders, progress reports from their music teachers. Finally, teachers wrote individual comments for each student highlighting some of the things that aren’t in the progress reports. Scores of 1 or 2 usually indicate that your child is working below the level that we’d like to see at this time of the year. Often the teacher comments will recommend specific things parents can do at home, or request a conference to you and the teacher can make a plan to accelerate your child’s progress. Sometimes there are behavior or effort concerns noted. If you saw any of these things on your child’s report, please contact your child’s teacher and arrange a conference at your earliest convenience. I review all 450+ comments, and it was disheartening to see evidence of a child struggling with achievement, and then in the same comment see that the child had only done 40% or 60% of their homework and/or reading logs. Or to read about a child who is being offered extra intervention support at school, but then is skipping those extra classes. Effort is incredibly important and it’s one of the things that families can directly influence. So please make sure your student is putting in the time and the work to practice their reading, build automaticity with their math facts, and getting their homework done. If your child is not making much progress with ST Math, Kid Biz, Raz Kids, Lexia etc. please talk to the teacher, make sure your child goes to one of the afterschool tutorials for grades 3-5 in the computer lab, head to the public library, or see what else you can do to complete these programs. Together we can help all our wonderful students meet grade level standards! Monday, February 18 Presidents’ Day Holiday – School Closed
