There is still space available in the M-W afterschool program for 3rd-4th-5th graders and in the Friday morning parent choir. Lift your voice! VALENTINE’S DAY DANCE is this Friday, February 9th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Volunteers are still needed for set-up, shifts during the event, and clean up. There will be delicious food and drinks, a raffle, lotería, a photobooth, balloons, a recycling demonstration and plenty of dancing!! This is an incredibly fun event for students and a great way to celebrate friendship! GOLDEN TICKETS – One of the ways that we promote positive behaviors that support the school community is to award Golden Tickets. These Golden Tickets are deposited in a large jar in the library. When students fill the jar, we have a schoolwide celebration. Right now we’re working toward a Crazy Hair and Hat day on February 16. Go Edison!! PROGRESS REPORTS GO HOME THIS FRIDAY –Watch for these reports on first semester progress toward year-end standards. Teachers will also begin making appointments to work with parents to create or update Academic Improvement Plans for students who will need a boost to meet standards. If you have questions about the report after you review it, please contact your child’s teacher. We are anxious to work with all parents to maximize second semester accomplishments! KINDNESS AND JUSTICE CHALLENGE GALLERY WALK –Our students are finishing a month of honoring Dr. King with kind and just acts and service to others. Come to the cafeteria this Wednesday morning to see our gallery of art projects, chains of kind and just acts, and information on our service projects.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: ATTENTION 5TH GRADE FAMILIES This is a busy time of the year for our 5th graders! If you’re a 5th grade parent, please read this column carefully. If your children are younger, here’s a preview of some of the things that happen in the culminating year at Edison. Students just returned from a three-day field trip to the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) at Toyon Bay, Catalina. There they studied the marine ecosystems, habitat and history of Catalina Island, had nighttime astronomy lessons, dissected squid, and kayaked, hiked and climbed. Thanks to our three 5 th grade teachers who accompanied the students and the five parents who went to help chaperone. If you did not receive a call from the principal advising you of the arrival time, please contact Kathy Fargnoli (ext. 61-348) to check the telephone numbers that you have entered in the district information system. This system is different from the PTA system that sends periodic calls about school activities. The official school system (Blackboard Connect with data from Illuminate) is used for all emergencies, school closures, and official notices from the school or district. It’s critical that all families have a current phone number in this system in case of emergencies. This week, we are starting to administer the FITGRAM, California’s physical fitness test mandated for all students in 5th grade. The tests will be administered over several days during students’ physical education classes. The state will provide parents with test results later in the year and this information can be very useful in helping your child maintain good health and fitness. For more information about the FITGRAM see https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/pf/documents/pgtu-pft.pdf We’re heading into intensive rehearsals for the 5th grade play, which will be presented on Thursday evening, March 8. Please make plans to join us at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. The 5th grade theater classes are moving to the cafeteria so the students have experience on the big stage. Martha Ramirez can use some help with props, costumes, supervision, running lines with students, etc. Please contact her at extension 61-107 or let your child’s teacher know by putting a note in the agenda if you can help out! The play is an amazing culmination of students’ theater, music and dance programs at Edison and ALL are invited. Finally, food sales at the Valentines Dance are traditionally fundraisers for 5th grade culmination celebrations. If you haven’t signed up yet to help in some fashion, please sign up in the Parent Information Center or contact your Room Representative. Many hands make light work and help provide the funding for fun year-end activities for students. It takes a village!
