Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org

ANNOUNCEMENTS REMINDER: RESTRICTIONS ON CELL PHONES AND SMART WATCHES ON CAMPUS -- Several weeks ago, we used Semanario to review district policy on student use of cellular devices on elementary school campuses. In case you missed it, students are not allowed to use these devices during the school day and may only have the devices on campus when parents have an approved waiver from the school. The waivers only authorize use of the devices AFTER school to communicate with families. Unfortunately, these devices usually also have the ability to connect to unfiltered content from the internet and access games. We are having a problem with some students using these devices during the school day to access games and the internet with friends. Such use violates school rules and we are greatly concerned with some of the sites that students are accessing and sharing with friends. Please recall that our policy is to confiscate any devices used during the school day and hold them in the office for parents to pick up. If your child brings any device (smart phone or smart watch to school, please review the rules with them and/or reconsider whether you want your young child to have a device with unfiltered internet access and/or limit the internet access your child has on their device. 5th GRADE PLAY – Friday, March 8, 6:30 pm, Edison Cafeteria. Please join us for this amazing bilingual production involving all 5 th grade students! NOCHE DE CESAR CHAVEZ – Please join us Friday evening, March 15 for Edison’s celebration of the life and work of César Chávez. This year our celebration pays tribute to Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farmworkers and tireless activist for social justice. Please join us for a delicious dinner prepared by the parents of ELAC at 5:30 pm and the program beginning at 6:30 pm featuring a concert by our 2nd grade students, the afterschool student Coro en Español and the Family Singing Circle.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

DROP OFF AND PICK UP POLICIES As you’ll recall, SMMUSD’s Superintendent asked all elementary schools to take measures to improve safety by limiting public access to campus during drop-off and pick up. After a lengthy process of consultation, we began implementing a revised safety plan in January. A brief review of these policies: IN THE MORNINGS:  Entry to campus between 8:00-8:30 am occurs only through the Virginia Avenue Gate and the Kansas Avenue Gates.  The gate between the Preschool parking lot is always locked – functioning only as an emergency exit.  Families who use before school child care or who are bringing students at 7:45 for breakfast enter campus via the Virginia Avenue Gate using an entry code.  Families may wait with students on campus between 8:00 – 8:30 am in the cafeteria courtyards or in the cafeteria itself.  The classroom area and the Kindergarten playground are areas for students and staff only. BETWEEN 8:30 AM AND 1:30 PM:  The only public access to campus is via the main office. Ring the bell and those with business on campus will be admitted. IN THE AFTERNOON:  All entry to campus is through the Virginia Avenue Gate.  Parents picking up Kindergarten and TK students enter through the Virginia Avenue Pedestrian Gate with the Gate Code and wait in the cafeteria courtyard.  The same procedure is used for parents picking up 1st and 2nd graders on campus at 2:45 and for 3rd-5th pick ups at 3:00; students at these grades may also exit through the Kansas or Virginia gates to wait for families near the pick up zones.  Between 2:45-3:15 pm, the Kansas Avenue gate operates as an EXIT ONLY gate. Families wait outside for students to exit. We appreciate your support in keeping students safer! 5th Grade Play – Family Performance Friday, March 8 at 6:30 pm
