FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF EDISON
ANNOUNCEMENTS . VOTE AT THE EDISON LIBRARY –Our library is closed to students and staff from February 26 through March 7. That’s because Edison will be a FourDay Voting Center, open for voting from February 29 - March 2 (8:00 am 5:00 pm) and on election day March 3 (7:00 am – 8:00 pm). Any registered voter in Los Angeles County can choose to vote at Edison.
LETTERS FROM HARRIET TUBMAN – Wednesday morning we start the day with assemblies at 8:30 am and 9:30 am. The Music Center on Tour is bringing performances of Letters from Harriet Tubman a dramatization of the life of the famous Underground Railroad Conductor. If you’re on campus on Wednesday morning, and can linger, we should have a little room for parent seating. SSTS/IEPS/504S – This alphabet soup of acronyms refers to team meetings that are held to explore needs and services to learning disabled and striving students. Each requires a team of parent, teacher, principal and various specialists and it can be tricky to find times when all parties are available. We only have a complete special education team here on Fridays and every time we need to pull teachers out during the day, requires us to hire a substitute. We have over 30 meetings to schedule over the span of four weeks, so I especially want to thank you, parents for your flexibility when we call to schedule these meetings. We appreciate it!
Tuesday, March 3 Election Day – Library Room 210 Teatro Informance
Excellent classroom instruction happens every day at Edison – students study in two languages, learn math, science, social studies, have physical education, enjoy playtime and have lunch. There are also regular music, theater and/or arts classes, and trips to the library. These are the visibly obvious things that happen every week. But, there are also many other things that happen during a typical week at Edison. I thought that you might find it interesting to learn about some of those less visible things. So here’s an inside look at the week of February 24. On Monday, February 24, our third and fourth grade teachers spent a day working together to look at writing data and create research-based writing lessons. Our fifth graders took the Math Interim Assessment Blocks and students in Ms. Jimenez class gave their families a theater informance. About 35 of our students in the Monday 3-4-5 grade Garden at Lunch group met with me and Counselor Cynthia Lua during their lunch recess, to chat, weed, water plants and bury waterconservation vessels (or ollas) in the garden. Before and after school intervention support classes meet (for four days this week) with students who can make their goals with a little extra differentiated support. I ended the evening, along with PTA President Adrienne Trannel, at the Superintendent’s advisory committee for the Education Foundation talking about the tough choices facing us as the district works to close at $10+ million deficit. On Tuesday, February 25, we hosted Learning Rounds where principals from SMASH, Roosevelt and Franklin visited our classrooms with me and two district facilitators to look at writing instruction in six classrooms, learn about how we teach, and give us feedback on their observations. TK students headed out on a field trip accompanied by parent volunteers. After school, Counselor Lua and I met for an update on our needs and progress getting services for students who can benefit from on campus counseling. Wednesday, February 26 we started our day with two assemblies (thank you PTA!), continuing our observance of African American History Month with a performance piece “Letters from Harriet Tubman.” Young Storytellers Foundation writing mentors had a 1.5 hour storywriting class with 10 5th graders. The library closed until March 7 for voting. Thursday February 27, our TK and K teachers participate in a professional development day on the Next Generation Science Standards with UCLA trainers and we have before and after school IEPs. Friday, February 28, 4th grade students in Maestra Maiztegui’s class give morning and afternoon performances of the 4th grade play– The True History of California. Our Special Education team holds four IEP meetings and the Student Success Team holds three SST meetings for striving students. Just another beautiful week at Edison serving our amazing students!
