Same Difference by Calida Garcia Rawles  Same Difference is a charming book for young readers (4-8 year olds) that addresses the sensitive and sometime divisive issues of beauty and identity. It has a lyrical, upbeat air that begs to be read aloud and offers an engaging rhyme pattern for young children. Vivid illustrations capture the spirit and innocence of Lida and Lisa, two first cousins who find themselves at odds with each other over their physical differences. With the help of their wise grandmother, the girls soon realize that their bond is deeper than what they see and our differences are what make us beautiful.

About the author As a painter, Calida Garcia Rawles explores the intersecting themes that connect race, gender, and identity politics. Her current practice focuses on a series of large-scale paintings that examine the physical, social, and psychological pressures which manifest from the body. Her paintings are derived from the internal and external pressures of being a woman, and from the weight that the black male and black female body carry in today’s social climate. Rawles refined her aesthetic sensibilities at Spelman College, where she studied art. She then attended New York University, where she earned a master’s of art in painting. Rawles wrote and illustrated the children’s book, Same Difference, which addresses beauty and identity, and chronicles her parenthood journey on her blog CrazyMomWithKids.com, which was recognized in Amy Cuddy’s New York Times bestseller, Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenge. Rawles lives in Los Angeles with her family and cat, named Turtle.
