FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: AFTER PROGRESS REPORTS Hopefully, you’ve now had time to review your student’s Mid-Year Progress Reports. These reports are an important continuation of the conversation between parents and teachers that began during fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you have not already done so, please review your child’s Progress Report carefully for an update on progress during the first semester and possibly some additional recommendations for the second semester. While our students are diverse and develop at their own individual rates, there are standards that students must master by the end of each grade level. When assessment data indicates that there is a danger of a student not meeting those standards we develop an individual Academic Improvement Plan for the student. The plan contains recommendations for additional steps to be taken at school and at home. Sometimes these plans include provision of intervention classes before or after school, or work with reading specialists during the school day to accelerate reading and writing skills. So, some of our students have been coming a little early, staying a little late, or working with specialists during the school day to supplement classroom instruction. If your child was recommended for an intervention class or support, please do all that you can to ensure that he or she attends regularly. We can’t provide the support if they are not present! Often Academic Improvement Plans will also include recommendations for independent reading – including specific goals for ST Math or Kid Biz -- and specific things that teachers or parents agree to do to support learning. This extra reading or math at home also can make a big difference. If you don’t have easy internet access at home, talk with your child’s teacher about the possibility of staying a bit afterschool to use classroom computers or perhaps using the computer lab after school a few days a week. Teachers are now working with parents to update these Plans – adjusting goals to reflect progress, making additional suggestions, and/or recommending a Student Success Team (SST) meeting to examine further why a student may not be making sufficient progress. The SST meeting generally involves the parents, teacher, principal and some of the school’s specialists and counselors. When interventions have been provided, adjusted and followed and student progress still lags, the SST team may make a recommendation for counseling, different services, or an evaluation for possible learning disabilities. If you have questions about your child’s progress report or how to continue to support their progress, please contact your child’s teacher. We have high expectations for all our students and are committed to working with families as a team to help all students make appropriate progress. When teachers, the school, students, and families work together, our students succeed!
