ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: FEBRUARY HAPPENINGS

TOYS FROM HOME: A reminder and request for assistance Children are not supposed to bring toys from home to school. This includes the kinds of small figurines that they love to tuck into their pockets and backpacks as well as Pokemon and other trading cards. The same rules apply in the afterschool programs. Such toys can and will be picked up and held until a parent can come to retrieve them. They are busy during the school day and the toys are a distraction – and sometimes the cause of arguments. Thanks for your understanding and support. BLACK HISTORY MONTH : DID YOU KNOW? Lonnie Johnson is a scientist who loves to play…with science. While experimenting, he discovered a way to make water squirt far across the room. He invented the Super Soaker!

February is a short but busy month on our campus – African American History Month, Valentine’s Day, Kindness and Justice Challenge, Progress Reports, Family Valentine’s Dance, and many theater informances – all made a bit more challenging with the outbreak of Norovirus in the District! Norovirus: While the virus may have begun with JAMS students, it is now out in the community and is beginning to show up on the campuses that feed into JAMS. We have had a higher than average number of stomach viruses reported here at Edison, and one confirmed case of Norovirus. We are working together with the District and following the recommendations of the County Department of Public Health on cleaning, treatment, and the mandatory exclusion of students until they are virus free. Please do not send students to school if they have fever or symptoms of flu. If they have Norovirus symptoms, they must remain at home for three days AFTER ALL SYMPTOMS HAVE GONE AWAY. For some children that can mean 6-8 days away from school! Please stay in touch with Kathy Fragnoli (ext. 61-348) about symptoms and absences. She will also try to help you arrange for homework from the classroom teacher. Extra cleaning with products approved by the County Department of Public Health has been and will continue to be conducted. Working together, we can arrest the spread of this very contagious virus as quickly as possible. At Edison, we celebrate Valentine’s Day as the Día de Amistad (Friendship Day). Friendship and kindness are important skills for elementary school students to learn, practice, and celebrate. We begin with our traditional family Valentines Dance on Friday, February 10 at 6:30 pm. Please join us for food, dance, Lotería, games, our big raffle, and lots of merriment. This is an important community building event AND a PTA fundraiser to support enrichment programs they provide our students at school. Please sign up to volunteer on the bulletin board in the breezeway. On Monday, February 13 the children are encouraged to wear blue for an Edison Blue Ribbon Spirit Day. On Tuesday, February 14 students will exchange valentines in their classrooms and write a blue valentine to the school – explaining why they think Edison won a National Blue Ribbon. If your child chooses to bring valentines, remember to bring one for EVERY child in the class. Please do not send candy or gift bags with treats for Valentines Day. Teachers will not allow students to have access to them during the school day. On February 15, we conclude our celebrations of Kindness and Justice with a morning student assembly headlined by our new superintendent, Dr. Ben Drati. Each class will also bring its links in the chain we’ve been making for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Kindness and Justice Challenge and we’ll create a schoolwide chain symbolizing our commitment to behave in kind and fair ways with each other.
