Edison Reaching Out – Three things to share this week: 1) Collecting Emergency Supplies for Families at the Border -- The Edison Community Support Network is partnering with UHRI.ngo to collect donations of toiletries (including diapers), new socks, non-perishable food, and water for migrants in shelter at the Tijuana border. Bring what you can in the next two weeks (boxes will be near the Cafecito area). If you are interested in providing more support or driving down to deliver donations, contact Rebecca at Rebecca.cannara@gmail.com. 2) Raising Funds for UNICEF Edison students raised over $300.00 for the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund by Trick or Treating for UNICEF this year. Our contribution was tripled because Maestra Fullerton sent the donations in during a 3x flash match – so our students generated over $900. Thank you Maestra Fullerton for leading this project. 3) Phone Banking for the Ed Foundation –Thanks to the many Edison parents who made calls in English and Spanish on #Giving Tuesday!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:
UPCOMING CHANGES IN GATE POLICIES Early this fall, Superintendent Drati asked elementary schools to look at our gate policies and try to increase safety at drop off and pick up. Some schools chose to do this by asking families to drop off and pick up students outside the school gates. At Edison, we wanted to make sure that any changes to our policies would not only improve safety but also maintain our family-friendly community. So we’ve spent two months listening to various stakeholders and studying options. The resulting proposals were approved by our Safety Committee and recommended for adoption by Site Council. Over the next few weeks we will be disseminating information about a few changes, preparing new signage for gates and assembly areas and preparing to implement these changes on January 7, 2019 when we return from Winter Break. Some changes you may not notice as we have been experimenting with some things over the last month – or they were just small tweaks on our current policies. Others are more noticeable and will involve some changes in planning for some families. In a nutshell, here’s what will begin in January: • The large perimeter gates will be open for shorter amounts of time as we make more use of the code-operated pedestrian gate on Virginia Avenue for pick-ups for TK-K-1-2 and for early morning arrivals before 8:00 am. • From 8:00 am -3:00 pm we’ve established teaching and learning zones (restricted to students and staff). But, we’ve also established an on campus family waiting area in the central courtyard for those adults who want to walk on to the campus in the morning or afternoon to be with students and/or connect with each other. • In the afternoon, the Kansas Gate will be an EXIT ONLY gate. Children will be able to leave through that gate to meet parents waiting outside or to use the drive through pick-up zone, but no adults will be admitted in the pm. The gate will continue to be open for parents and students in the AM from 8:00-8:30 am. • All child care or afterschool programs pick-ups will be only through the Virginia gate – if you’re picking up when school is still open, ring the bell and we’ll admit you. If you’re picking up after the office closes, use the code to the pedestrian gate that you have been given by your afterschool program. • Wednesday morning parent meetings have been relocated to the Edison library. Cultural heritage tables will also be staged in the library – and we invite them to remain for longer than a few minutes in the morning so more students and classes can appreciate them. There are a few parent classes and groups on other days of the week that will continue to operate in the teaching and learning zones but participants will sign in and wear a badge. • Calling all Volunteers! – Our survey indicated that many would like to see volunteer valets to help in the pick up and drop off zones. We would LOVE that. Please let us know when you’re available and we’ll clear and train you! December 5 PTA Board Meeting at 6:00 pm
