If you have some childappropriate, simple-to-use games that your family is no longer using, please consider donating them to Edison. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: TRY THE HOUR OF CODE! Did you know that over 70% of all new STEM jobs are in computing and that nearly every industry is trying to hire computer programmers? Unfortunately, only 40% of U.S. high schools even offer computer science. Further, girls and people of color are dramatically underrepresented among computer science students. Computer science is about logic, problem solving and creativity. It is foundational knowledge and technology affects every field. And we want our students to be exposed to and interested in coding! The Hour of Code is a nationwide attempt to expose more children to computer science and to support teachers in directing coding activities. There are wonderful on-line resources to teach coding – appropriate even for very young children. You can check out videos and coding tutorials and games at www.code.org. While officially the Hour of Code coincides with Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11), we decided to extend it through December at Edison. Each year we ask every teacher to expose their students to coding – for an hour or more. Many of the tutorials look like games (Minecraft, StarWars, Frozen, Angry Birds, etc.) but they are teaching the fundamentals of logic and problem solving. This year we invested in a set of programmable robots (Dash) as another fun tool to teach coding, so you may be hearing about our student’s adventures in programming a robot. Hour of Code activities on www.code.org are also fun to do at home and students can go quite far with on-line free resources. If you have access to the Internet at home, sit down with your child and play some coding games together! December is a short but busy month here at Edison.
