ANNOUNCEMENTS Correction – Site Council Nomination Forms So sorry, but I inadvertently did not attach the nomination form to the Semanario last week! So the nomination/election process has been extended by a week. This time, there are nomination forms included with this packet! They are due November 13. The election ballot will go out one week later on November 20. There are three spots for parent members of Site Council open this year. If you’d like to nominate someone – or yourself --- please return the Nomination Form to the Edison office by November 13. The three Site Council parent members whose first terms are ending this fall are eligible to stand for re-election if nominated and if they accept. These include: José Cervantes, Daniela Morato, and John Zimmerman. Site Council members review school data and surveys to assess school needs, develop and monitor the implementation of our School Plan, and review our Site Safety Plan. Please consider serving our school in this way. Halloween Parade – Thank you to all the families who came to share in the Costume Parade last week. Costumes were so clever and it was great to see so many families! Dia de los Muertos/Fall Festival -- Once again we want to thank our whole community for pulling together to produce an amazing event! The ofrendas for Día de los Muertos were beautiful and moving, the alfombra was gorgeous, the food was delicious and music and games were great! It takes a lot of people to pull off an event like this, so thanks to everyone for lending your time and talents. And muchisímas gracias to Special Events VP Judy Tobar Lerner. Grade Level Standards: What is My Child Supposed to Learn this Year in English Language Arts and Math? The Council for Great City Schools has published some very parent-friendly documents highlighting core English and Math standards from K through high school. These documents also show how the standards differ from the previous grade and the next grade. You can access them in English or Spanish at the following address: https://www.cgcs.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=328 They include some simple suggestions for how to work with children at home.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: By the time you read these lines, many of you will have already completed your parent-teacher conferences. If you somehow were not able to schedule an appointment during the conference window, please contact your child’s teacher and work out an alternative time for an in person or telephone conference. There are a couple of teachers who – because of family leave or emergency medical issues – will not be holding conferences until a little later in the fall. But our goal is to meet with the families of all our students before the end of the year. Your concerns and questions are important to us and we want to work with you to help your child thrive. We noticed last year that on the Edison Parent Survey, a significant number of families reported that they were not certain what grade level standards children are expected to master by the end of the year. Most teacher distributed these at Back to School Night, but because they are so important, you’ll be receiving another copy during fall conferences. Please do not hesitate to ask for clarification if you’re still not sure what the most important skills are for your child to master this year. The more you know, the easier it will be to monitor your child’s progress and understand how and where to support them. During conferences, we try to give you a clear picture of your child’s strengths and challenges at school so far this year. The report you get from the teacher may sometimes be different than what you see in your child at home. Obviously, we will never know your child as well as you do. But as you consider this information, please keep in mind that we work with your child in a different context. We also realize that we need a glimpse of what your child is like at home -- what he or she loves to do, whether they do or do not have an easy time with homework, and how you manage challenges that may come up at home. Sometimes a child that seems shy at school, is the life of the party at home. Or a child who has challenges maintaining focus in reading and writing may be single-minded in practicing the piano or training for a belt in Karate. The better we know our students, the better able we are to find ways to motivate, encourage and support them. So, we thank you for your candor and your time in partnering with the school to support your child! I would urge you to stay in touch with the teacher on a regular basis to make sure that your child is progressing at a good pace this year. If your child was recommended for a before- or after-school intervention, please take full advantage of that opportunity and make sure your child attends regularly. The conference is just the beginning of a conversation that continues all year!
