Build the Habit of Good Attendance

Our district’s pledge is to create a culture of attendance every day, every month. We know that achievement and student success is inextricably linked to attendance. Your school district leadership and staff are dedicated to ongoing communication, support and encouragement around the importance of showing up. The most important thing we can do for our children to be successful in life is to get them to school every day and every day on time. Here’s why:

In the elementary years, children who miss school are more likely to struggle academically and, in later years, to dropout entirely

In the secondary years, attendance is the No. 1 predictor of dropout and graduation rates

Attendance is a top indicator of being on track for graduation and for college and career readiness

Nearly 67% of course failures were attributed to low attendance

Although there are times when your child should stay home from school, it’s important to keep in mind that missing just a couple of days of school a month can have a severe impact on your child’s success. If there are issues preventing your child from regular school attendance, please reach out to your teacher, principal or school staff to discuss any concerns so we can help. Together we are making a difference!

Families often face hardship at different times and for many different reasons. We believe that Edison is a community that values looking out for each other and providing support in times of need. The Community Support Network works with Yoly Gutierrez, Edison’s Community Liaison, to provide additional support to families in whatever way we can. For example, we raise funds to help with basic needs and services such as rental assistance, emergency funds for food and bills, and legal consultations. Get involved and support the network: 1. DONATE We are looking for cash donations or gift cards to pay for groceries, metro, phone or other bills. For example, $40 would sponsor a family who may be in need of getting reliable legal consultation for their immigration status. Or maybe a family is in need of support to purchase groceries this month due to excess medical bills. Please drop off monetary donations in the office or look for us at cafecito. 2. PARTICIPATE For those who would like to be more involved, you can join our network and help us plan future efforts, respond to immediate community needs, or attend actions in the community to represent Edison interests. Please contact Francine Ortega (francineortega@gmail.com /510292-9428) if you would like more information about participating and/or donating. If you need assistance: Please contact Yoly (ygutierrez@smmusd.org / 310-828-0335 ext. 61-305). Your information will be kept confidential and is never shared with others at school. You will be able to meet with Yoly and she will act as the liaison to the network.
