ANNOUNCEMENTS Caring for Kids in Hot Weather – We’re having unseasonably hot weather this week.! Please dress children in lightweight clothing and try to send them with a re-usable water bottle. We watch the temperatures closely and as the thermometer rises we decrease aerobic activity, increase water and rest breaks, and when temperatures get too high, we move snack and lunch time, recess and PE indoors. We also encourage frequent hydration and watch carefully for signs of heat exhaustion. Pre-School, TK or Kinder 2018-19? If you want to claim a sibling priority for an entering Preschooler or student for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten in 2018-19, applications are due Friday, October 27, 2017. Thank You and Farewell to Tina Gonzalez! Our school counselor (through Family Services of Santa Monica - FSSM) Tina Gonzalez moved last year out to Claremont and the commute has proven to be too much. Her last day with us will be this Thursday. Her cases have been reassigned and FSSM is interviewing for a replacement counselor. Heartfelt thanks to Tina for her work with our students and families! We will miss you! Garden News –Thanks to the families who came out on Friday, October 20 to help move a small mountain of soil into the garden beds! Parent Teacher Conferences Are Coming th November 6-9 . These are important opportunities to review your child’s progress and talk with your child’s teacher about how to work together to support your child. If you have not already done so, see your child’s teacher to sign up for a conference! Halloween Parade – On Halloween morning (October 31), Edison has a fun tradition of a Halloween Costume Parade on the field. Beginning at 9:00 am, the DJ cranks up the spooky/fun tunes and students walk and dance around the field. Adults (in school appropriate costumes!) are welcome to join in the fun. No weapon props or excessive gore please (we have young students!) and students should not walk to school wearing masks. If your child for any reason does not want to come to the field, we will have an alternate activity in the library. Bring a cup of coffee and your camera!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: TEACHING STUDENTS TO BE GOOD SPORTS I had the pleasure of watching two of our flag football teams play last Saturday at Memorial Park. The kids played hard, worked well together as a team, had fun, and were great examples of good sports. And, very importantly, the Edison families attending the game did a tremendous job of modeling both support for the students and good sportsmanship! They applauded for good plays and impressive effort by both teams. Children learn a lot by watching the ways that coaches and family members behave on the sidelines and our students had great role models on Saturday! The dictionary describes a “good sport” as someone who exhibits polite behavior even or especially when things go wrong. Being a good sport is all about respect – respect for your teammates, respect for the players on the other team, respect for teachers, coaches and referees. While it’s fun to win, what kids learn goes well beyond the rules of the game and beyond winning and losing. The real goals of playing sports in elementary school include building the habit of exercise and fitness, having fun with peers, and learning important social skills -- like listening, communicating, learning to work as a team, and being a good sport. Many of our students – like the ones who were playing on Saturday -- participate in the CREST Sports program operated by the City of Santa Monica. According to the City of Santa Monica, “CREST Sports is a non-competitive recreation program where everyone participates regardless of ability while giving athletes the opportunity to compete and learn about the skills and rules of each sport.” CREST Sports works to cultivate an environment that promotes and encourages positive youth character development and as such includes the requirement that parents and players sign a code of conduct to participate. Failure to follow that code can result in removal of family members from the sidelines and/or a child from a team. I appreciate the way that CREST staff enforce that code – keeping it safe, respectful, and fun for everyone. The good sportsmanship that our children learn in elementary school is important because it “helps you develop an attitude of graciousness and respect that carries over into all the other areas of your life. If you're a good sport on the field, you'll also likely be a good sport in the classroom. Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace. (www.wonderopolis.org).” Thanks to our coaches and families for helping students learn to be gracious and respectful in sports, and in all areas of their lives!
