This is an important opportunity to hear how your student is doing, ask questions, share concerns, and form a partnership to support your child’s growth this year. Please note the different schedule the week of Nov. 5.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: GETTING READY FOR CONFERENCES Each fall, SMMUSD elementary schools hold parent/family-teacher conferences. We have a different schedule for four days – with a pupil free day on Tuesday, November 6 and three minimum days (November 7-8-9) to allow teachers to meet with the parents/guardians of the students in their classrooms. Please make sure that you sign up for a conference with your child’s teacher. This is a very important opportunity to focus specifically on your child and what he or she needs to be successful this year – academically, socially, and emotionally. How do I sign up for a conference? Some teachers had sign up lists out at Back to School Night. Some send home lists of available times. Some post sign-up sheets on the bulletin boards in the parent information center in the breezeway. If you don’t have a conference appointment yet, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule one. California law requires employers to allow parents reasonable time off to attend meetings at their child’s school. If your employer wants a letter confirming the time of your conference, please let us know and we’ll create a letter for you. Your child’s teacher will have prepared lots of information to share with you – updates on your child’s skills as measured by fall assessments, a report on attendance, information about homework completion, how he or she is getting along with peers and working in class, and ideas about how to help your child be successful this year. If your child is working below grade level or if it seems that your child is struggling in any area, the teacher may propose developing an individual Academic Improvement Plan that details what additional strategies or services the teacher or school will provide and asks what else parents may be able to do at home. If your child has such a plan, the teacher will also schedule follow up meetings so that we can work together to keep an eye on your child’s progress. Parents usually also have questions for teachers that they want to raise in a conference. Because the time for each conference is limited, you will want to think ahead of time about the questions you have for the teacher. It often helps to write these questions down and prioritize the ones that are the most important. Many parents prepare for conferences by asking their children, “What do you think your teacher will tell me?” or “What questions do you want me to ask your teacher?” Our goal in a conference is to equip parents with information and also to build a true working partnership to help your child thrive this year. Please plan to participate in this important opportunity! November 6 – Election Day And Pupil Free Day for Conferences
