Happy New Year! Just before the winter break, Edison Language Academy was named by the California State Department of Education as a 2020 California Distinguished School! We are proud to be one of only 323 elementary schools in California, one of 113 elementary schools in Los Angeles County, and the only school in SMMUSD to be awarded Distinguished School Status this year. The Distinguished Schools program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices and awards schools for closing the achievement gap for achieving exceptional student performance. Said Superintendent Thurman, “These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation. Thanks go to all the staff at these schools – teachers, administrators, classified employees – and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all their children.” The 2020 award follows Edison’s designation as a California Distinguished School in 2018 and 2016 recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. Our staff work to use research-based best instructional practices, use data-driven decision making, and work in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to improve practice and close achievement gaps. Congratulations to our hard-working staff, students, and parents! One of the important factors that leads to high academic achievement is regular and on-time attendance. Please start this year with a new dedication to get children to school on time, all day, every day. If your child has to miss a day, make sure to call and excuse the absence and bring notes or doctor/dentist appointments. And redouble efforts to get children to school on time! Congratulations to two of our grade levels that really have developed phenomenal overall attendance – 2nd grade (98.2 %) and 4th grade (97.2%). Let’s work to get every grade to these levels of attendance and keep student achievement climbing!!
