EDISON PARENT CHOIR – Come get to know other Edison families and learn some beautiful songs in Spanish. The parent choir with Jacqueline Fuentes is back -- Friday mornings right after drop off beginning this week in Room 109. No prior choir experience needed. EDISON FAMILY-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION PLAN – Please see the plan included with this Wednesday packet for information about who to call for different questions or concerns at school. We want to make sure all parents can easily identify where to seek help when questions or problems arise or when you have ideas to share. PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM EXCESS UV EXPOSURE – Our students are outside during multiple points during the day – recess, lunch and snack time, PE, visits to the garden, or just moving around campus. We live in “sunny Southern California” and our students get a lot more exposure to the sun than we sometimes realize. We encourage all parents to apply sunscreen to students before school and consider sending a hat to be worn during outdoor play. Sunscreen can also be brought to school for students to reapply before lunch recess. See the article on sunscreen in this Wednesday packet and let’s increase efforts to protect our children’s tender skin!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: KEEPING KIDS SAFE AT SCHOOL One of the three goals in our annual school improvement plan is to “Operate a safe, family friendly school with an emphasis on developing engaged, culturally competent students with the skills to manage problems and their own learning.” This is a big goal and there is a lot of work going on around different parts of it. This week I wanted to give you a brief overview of some of the things we do to keep Edison students physically safe at school and also to invite your questions and/or ideas around physical safety. More information in upcoming Semanarios about other kinds of safety and engagement. o Safety in Emergency Situations – Edison has a comprehensive school safety plan, updated annually, that helps us prepare for a wide variety of possible emergency situations. We’re finishing up this year’s review and update now. We teach and practice emergency procedures for fires, earthquakes, and lockdowns (safety drills). We have a staff safety committee, and provide training for staff on a wider range of possible emergencies. We maintain emergency clipboards in each classroom and for each playground supervisors, so other staff and substitutes have easy access to critical safety information. There are emergency supplies in all rooms where students are served and in a large emergency bin of supplies on campus. Supplies are reviewed and refreshed as needed each year. o Daily Safety -- We operate a locked campus during the school day with controlled admission. PTA provides funding for staff before and after school to help children get safety into and out of school. Site Council significantly supplements district funds for playground supervision and health office support so we have the staffing that we think is optimal for our campus. We have detailed safety and behavior rules reviewed regularly with students, included in the Parent Handbook, and reviewed annually by our safety committee. o Daily Health of Students – Rules about student dress are about keeping children safe during play we follow state and district guidelines about what foods are served to students during the school day to avoid sugary and fatty foods – even when those rules are unpopular. Due to our proximity to the freeway, we have air filtration systems and limit our outdoor activities during times of the day when prevailing winds blow south from the freeway. We encourage the use of sunscreen and hats to protect students from exposure the sun’s rays. Increasing awareness about the need for UV protection will be a priority this year.
