PTA ASSOCIATION MEETING - Please join us on Wednesday evening, January 22 at 6:00-7:30 pm in the Edison Library for a discussion with Supt Drati about SMMUSD financial and program priorities. One of the responsibilities of public school districts is to be financially solvent and make the best use of financial resources to meet the needs of students. From time to time, financial resources and needs can change and districts go through a process of realigning programs and priorities. Dr. Drati will be candidly sharing the fiscal challenges our district is facing and the process of soliciting input from stakeholders. Child care and light refreshments will be available. Please join us and be a part of these important conversations. Mariachi Concert – The Elementary and Middle School Mariachi groups will offer a concert on Tuesday evening, January 21 at 6:00 pm in the Edison Cafeteria. Many Edison 5th graders and former Edison students now in Middle School participate in these groups. All are invited but current 4th graders are particularly encouraged to attend as they will be eligible for the elementary Mariachi group next year. 5th grade families are providing dinner for sale from 5:00-6:00 pm. Please join us and salute the accomplishments of these young musicians!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: KNOWING WHERE WE WANT TO GO When I was a teen, there was a popular book titled “If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, You’ll Probably End Up Somewhere Else!” The idea was that if you have an idea about what you’d like to be or do, then you can figure out the best roadmap to get there. That’s still good advice – for all of us and for our students! There is an academic road map for each grade level – the standards are where students should end up by the end of the year. Teachers shared these at Back to School Night and we reference them throughout the year. If you’d like another copy, let us know as it’s really important for parents to know what students should be able to do by the end of the year. Classroom and Intervention Teachers are doing lots of different kinds of assessments in January and February to see how much progress students have made toward these standards and toward the mid-year goals. On February 7, you’ll be receiving Mid-Year Progress Reports that will share this information with you. These Progress Reports are not “report cards” with final grades. But they will let you know whether or not your child is likely to meet or exceed grade level standards by the end of the year if they keep making progress at the same rate. With that information, parents and teachers can determine if we just need to keep providing the same level of support as we teach the content for the second part of the year, or if we need to add supports or make some changes. If your child’s progress is moving slowly, the teacher will be meeting with you to design or update an Academic Improvement Plan. This plan will include actions that the school can take and actions that children and parents can take to accelerate progress. Sometimes that may include a Student Success Team (SST) meeting which invites other school specialists to the conversation to see if some additional school supports (intervention, counseling, assessment, etc.) may be needed. We look forward to working with you to make sure all our students are on track to get to their year-end destination!
