FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: TECHNOLOGY T OOLS TO SUPPORT AND EXTEND LEARNING Some of our most important work this year has been in the areas of science, math and technology. With new California Content Standards in Math now in place there are significant shifts in instructional practice and content. Additionally, we’ve had a huge influx of technology resources at Edison. So Site Council invested substantial resources for work in this area in 2014-2015 – funding professional development and coaching for teachers in math and in technology, and updating Edison’s technology tools. Our focus on math, science and technology will continue into the summer and on to next year. Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Mind Research Institute matched by our Title I funds, we will be able to expand ST Math to all Edison students next year! Born out of neuroscience research at the University of California, Irvine, MIND’s unique approach accesses the brain’s innate “spatial-temporal” reasoning ability. According to MIND, “this ability, which lies at the core of innovative thinking and sophisticated problem-solving, allows the brain to hold visual, mental representations in short-term memory and to evolve them in both space and time, thinking multiple steps ahead.” ST Math is also fun for students, using interactive, graphically-rich animations that look like a series of games or puzzles to be solved. The program moves at each student’s own pace. Students can access the program at school and at home on desktop or laptop computers and on supported tablets. Read more at /www.mindresearch.org/stmath/ and watch for fall parent workshops to learn more. We’re also purchasing some new computer-based reading and science resources in Spanish and English for our youngest students (K-1-2) from Scholastic and A to Z Learning to increase the amount of nonfiction high-interest leveled reading resources for our young readers. Discovery Education and Streaming Plus will be back for all grade levels, providing rich multi-media resources to build students’ background knowledge through research. Discovery Education resources also help students engage and interact with different types of text, both print and digital media, identify main ideas and key details, critically evaluate the information to draw conclusions, and cite relevant evidence to support their answers. KidBiz, Achieve 3000’s non-fiction leveled reading and writing, will return for 2nd-5th graders as will Lexia Reading for 2nd and 3rd graders and any student who needs a little more support in English reading and language. These programs are all accessible from home as well as at school. Get to know these technology tools next year and how they can support and extend our students’ learning in math, science, and reading. .
