FIREWOOD
My wife and I want to thank all the Village of North Collins Highway Department employees. Again this winter, they tirelessly worked to keep our streets plowed and salted. We have lived in other communities, and nowhere have the roads been maintained as good as here. They were out in the windy, cold weather while we were safe and warm in our homes. Instead of complaining about some minor issue, let’s thank them for a “JOB WELL DONE”.

Eden Garden Study Club Plants Town of Eden Hanging Baskets
For members of the Eden Garden Study Club (EGSC) the annual event of planting the town hanging baskets is a renewal and invigorating sign of Spring. This year the affair took place Saturday March 15, 2025 at Amos Zittel green houses. The occasion always brings excitement and smiles to club members as getting one’s hands in the dirt is a welcome treat after an exceptionally long winter. A committee from the garden club meets in early January with the farm growers to select the colors and varieties of flowers to adorn the streets of Eden during the summer season. After planting, the hanging baskets are divided among five of the greenhouse growers and cared for by the growers until they are ready to withstand the outside elements. Meanwhile at the Eden Central Jr./Sr. High School Greenhouse, EGSC members water daily and maintain the plantings for the large street containers. Placement of the ground containers is coordinated with the Town Recreation Department and usually takes place in late May.

From the Old Photo Album North Collins Speedway
Although today’s “photo” is actually an advertisement from the Town of Brant history book of 1964, we thought it was an interesting historical item to share. The speedway, advertised as North Collins, N.Y., was physically located in Brant, N.Y. In September 2019, we had mentioned that Mr. Jim Cardamone donated a 1967 North Collins Speedway program book to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society. As promised, we are going to share some of the contents with you.
The inside cover of this 1967 program book lists the North Collins Speedway track officials as: President & Race Director - Art Clark, Starter - Dave Sutton, Pit Steward - Clark Rice, Announcer - Rick Bennett, Scorer - Rosemary Bennett, Safety Inspector - Frank Wagner, Line Up Man - Willie Schroeder and Business Mgr. - William E. Kalenda.
The “DRIVER OF THE WEEK” was 32 year old Butch Hoffman of Chaffee, N.Y. He won this title because of “his Super Bomb feature victory”. He is also in the #3 spot of the Super Bomb point standings. PIT STOP comments by Rick Bennett add: “Butch Hoffman must have had at least one or two tigers in his tank on August 11th. He won the Super Bomb feature race with complete ease. It was his first feature winner of the season at North Collins Speedway.”
The North Collins Speedway Point Standings as of August 11th, 1967 were posted for two categories. The SUPER BOMBS - the top 3 of 30 total listed are car #7 Cliff Norton of Hamburg with 265 pts., car #65 Bill Torrisi of Kenmore with 205 pts. and car #1 Butch Hoffman of Chaffee with 195 pts. The SEMI-LATE MODELS - the top 3 of 63 total listed are car #3ACES Don Wylie of Buffalo with 224 pts., car #311 Laverne Pangrazio of Byron with 195 pts. and car #82 Don Belzile of East Aurora with 134 pts. Local North Collins drivers in the point standings are: car #19 Stroker McGurk, car #4 Frank Boice and car #14 Al DiCarlo.
In addition to over 10 pages of advertisements of gas, oil, tires, auto parts, racing equipment, insurance, printers, collision shops, restaurants, farm related businesses and car dealerships offering makes and models of Chrysler, Plymouth, Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, Dodge and Ford, the program book also listed an announcement that “25 kids will receive free rides around the track with favorite driver on Friday, August 25, 1967!”

75 YEARS OF SERVICE …
“The older I grow the more I do love spring and spring flowers.” ~Emily Dickinson
It’s that time of year! Who can resist the cheerful sight of the first daffodils and crocuses. Those early spots of color are a welcome sight after our months of cold and snow. They remind us that soon the trees will be greening and the natural world will reawaken from its winter sleep.
Even a late snowstorm can’t seem to stop those hardy early flowers. They may bow their heads when snow comes down on them, but as soon as the sun comes out they lift their petals and bounce right back, often blooming even in the snow.
What miracles lie in those dull brown bulbs we plant in the fall. Whether we are old or young, what joy they bring to us months later when their colors burst forth and remind us that spring has come again.
