On April 10th, the Eden Town Hall meeting room was filled with local seniors eager to hear from Kellie Spawton, an Eden resident and expert in fraud detection and prevention. Speaking to a crowd of more than 55 concerned attendees, Kellie shared valuable insights on how scams operate, warning signs to watch for, and practical tips to avoid becoming a victim.
The interactive session encouraged participants to ask questions, revealing just how many residents have already encountered scams. A key takeaway from Kellie’s presentation was the stark reality: scammers are not slowing down—in fact, they’re stepping up their efforts. Staying alert and aware of both social and digital surroundings is critical to protecting oneself.
Kellie concluded the event by fielding additional questions and providing a list of useful resources for those seeking help:
• Town of Eden Police: 716-992-9211
• Erie County Adult Protective Services: 716-858-6877
• FTC Identity Theft Website: www.identitytheft.gov
• FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center: www.ic3.gov
• Credit Bureaus:

o Equifax: www.equifax.com, 888-378-4329
o TransUnion: www.transunion.com, 800-916-8800
The program is available for online viewing until June 10th at: Watch the Program
This event marked the first initiative from a grassroots group called Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Eden. "We’re just a few concerned citizens who saw a need and decided to act," said founding member Joe O’Bryant. “Each of us has been involved in the community, and we’ve seen areas where support was lacking. Recent circumstances brought us together, and this scam prevention session is our first step toward supporting Eden’s senior population.”
The group has backing from the Eden Town Board, including board member Vinny Vacco, who’s actively involved with the effort. “When these guys presented the idea at a board meeting in January, I knew I had to be part of it,” said Vacco. “I offered to serve as the liaison and started attending their meetings. From day one, I was all in. I’ll do whatever I can to help Neighbors Helping Neighbors succeed.”
When the group began organizing late last year, they focused on identifying underserved and vulnerable members of the community. Seniors emerged as a top priority. “Eden is a town filled with people who genuinely care,” said co-founder Kevin Karstedt. “Most of us are only one degree of separation from someone who needs help. Our goal is to ensure that support is always just one person away.”
Neil Goldberg, another founding member, echoed the sentiment: “That ‘one degree’ idea is what sparked our first program. I knew my neighbor Kellie had the expertise, and from there, the idea took shape.”
“We’re thankful to the Eden Town board for letting us host the event at Town Hall and for helping spread the word,” added Scott Hultquist, the group’s fourth founding member and Director of Eden EMS.
Looking ahead, Neighbors Helping Neighbors plans to establish a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, create outreach tools, build partnerships, and continue listening to residents to identify areas of need. “The enthusiasm for this work is only matched by the level of need we’re discovering,” Karstedt said. “To us, that confirms we’re on the right track. Stay tuned!”

“A mother holds her children’s hands for a while... their hearts forever.”
On Mother’s Day, take the time to thank your mother for all she has done for you throughout your life. Your existence is truly a miracle— for she gave you the gift of life!
No matter how young or old she may be, she continues to hold you close to her in her heart, however far away you may have ventured. And no matter how old you may have become, you will always be her “baby.”
You may not possess the words to say all she means to you, but you can let your actions speak for you. The bond you share is stronger than time and unfathomable. It is a mystery of science and a magical union that cannot be explained. You share memories with her that no one else can ever have.
On Mother’s Day, let her know that you remember everything and that you love her.
