Bonnie Gambee passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on January 15th, 2025. Born and raised in South Buffalo then later settled in the Town of Evans in 1958. Loving wife of the late William A. Gambee. Wonderful, loving mother of the late Donald R., Robert (Carrie), Debra, William Jr., Susan (Frederick/ Rocky) Wilhelm, Lisa (Michael) Guenot, Linda (Ric) Gambee-Zybert, and Michelle (John) Ciciera. Also survived by 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Daughter of the late Robert and Olive Ford. Bonnie was a lifelong swimmer, lifeguard, and WSI who taught all her children, grandchildren, and many others in the WNY area to swim for over 40 years. She had several careers, first in banking and then in the field of social work starting at OLV in the Infant Home then as the Director of Group Homes for OLV, followed by becoming a training specialist for the NYS Training Institute, and lastly taking a position as Director of Counseling at Hilbert College from which she retired in order to travel with her husband of 58 years. Bonnie continued her private practice, which she had started in the 1990s, until her husband became seriously ill. She volunteered for many organizations such as the American Red Cross, First Church of Evans (numerous boards), Evans Little Loop, Fresh Air Fund, SOS, and Habitat for Humanity. Arrangements were by the Latimore Schiavone Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather for a “Celebration of Life” service to be held Saturday, February 1st at 10 am, at the First Church of Evans. Flowers gratefully declined; memorials may be made to the American Red Cross ZAC Foundation, which works to prevent drowning by teaching water safety

The Eden Alzheimer’s Caregiver Respite Program jumped on the Bills bandwagon early this year, embracing the theme of “The Bills Make You Wanna Shout!” Volunteers and guests were in full Bills Mafia mode, creating a festive atmosphere for everyone involved. The tailgate spread included plenty of finger foods like chicken fingers and meatballs, and lunch followed the same theme with a choice of red or white chili (this reporter tried both!).The craft team had a blast providing the materials for guests to make Bills pennants, which they can proudly wave for the next few weeks. The day concluded with a lively sing-along featuring the iconic Bills Make Me Wanna Shout!
The program’s planning team meets regularly to assess ways to improve the service offered to both caregivers and their loved ones. These meetings also allow the team to plan themes for upcoming sessions. The Eden program meets on the third Wednesday of each month, with the February session falling on the 19th—just a few days after the Super Bowl. In anticipation of a potential Bills Super Bowl victory, the decision was made to leave some of the Bills decorations up for the February event.
“We are deeply committed to our guests and their caregivers, but we also want to ensure that our volunteers have positive experiences,” says Michelle Wilson. “This is one of the reasons our volunteer base has remained strong, with many of them staying with us since we began in 2015.”
The Eden program is supported by Eden United Methodist Church and the entire town of Eden. Caregivers interested in learning how the program can benefit them and their loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can contact Kevin Karstedt at 716-984-5130.

Michael Rakiecki
Mary Elise “Mimi” Smith, formerly of Eden, NY and, most recently, Williamsville, NY, left her physical limitations behind and danced off into the Kingdom of her Lord on Jan 21, 2025 with family by her side. Born on May 7, 1960. Mimi was preceded in death by her parents, Jack M. Smith and Mary Ellen Smith (Brindley), and 2 unknown, yet selfless, organ donors, who gave her their kidneys so that she could experience 43 additional years of a dialysis free life. She is survived by her siblings: James “Brad” Smith, John C. Smith (Kathleen), Anita “Winkie” Smith (Maureen Reese), and Jaclyn “Jackie” Smith, along with her 2 nieces: Jena Nasevich (Michael) and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Smith. Mimi faced many uphill health battles throughout her life, but her faith in the Lord never wavered. Initially projected by doctors not to live past her teenage years, Mimi defied all the odds to live an amazing 64 active years, still working out once a week with her favorite trainer at the Y, Brian, until just recently. Her hobbies included plastic canvas, listening to music, attending theater plays, and playing dominoes. Mimi especially looked forward to her annual trips and adventures with her “Labor Day Ladies” (aka Kate Riedel, Kathy Brenner, and Lynn Crabtree) which were expertly planned, executed, and even “documented” with trip minutes that were filed by Mimi for future reference for when she needed a good laugh. A review of these minutes detail 22 years of memories, laughter and assorted shenanigans on various trips which enabled her to experience such things as the sea turtles on Jekyll Island, the Oprah Winfrey show in Chicago, the Rockettes in NYC, Mama Mia in Toronto, Prince Charming in Disney World, and trips to Nashville, Washington DC, and Cincinnati, to name just a few. Mimi is forever grateful to her nephrologists at Buffalo General who added many quality years to her life. First the late Dr. Anthone brothers, and currently, Dr. Kohli. A memorial mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Eden will be celebrated at a later date at the convenience of the family, followed by interment at Immaculate Conception cemetery in Eden. Memorials may be sent to the Eden Community Foundation, in Mimi’s honor. Words of sympathy may be left on www.LaingFuneralHome.com

Michael graduated from Orchard Park High School in 1978, then began a career in the NYS Department of Corrections where he worked for over 30 years. Later on, he attended & graduated from the police training academy at Genesee Community College and began working as a law enforcement officer. He married the love of his life, Lisa Staby, in August 1986 and they were married for over 31 years. They welcomed five children together. His children were the center of his world, and he dedicated his nights & weekends to watching their sporting events, band concerts, volunteering for snack stands, and chaperoning school trips. First and foremost, Michael was a family man, and he knew no greater joy than spending time surrounded by his family. Later in life he became a grandfather to Karl and Vivienne, which brought him immeasurable happiness. Michael found companionship with his loving partner, Diane, with whom he enjoyed years of traveling, events, and family celebrations. “Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark on a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” ---John Boswell
There’s a slower pace to winter. True, the weather often provides its own set of challenges, but it also offers acceptable excuses to stay home in our little cocoons of warmth and comfort.
It’s a time to finish projects that have been languishing-- or to start new ones. It’s the season to clean out a closet, or at least a drawer or two, and discard those unused items. It gives us long nights to read, watch movies, have phone chats with friends, or even organize files or paperwork. It’s a time of renewal that’s not to be missed.
But winter is also a special time to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, to wonder at the tracks of animals that appear in your yard, to be amazed by the forces that shape swirls of snow into sculptures. You don’t have
be a
winter before it is over!
