When it Comes to School Bus Safety

Motorists must stop when a school bus flashes its red lights – It’s the law. As summer winds down, children across Erie County are heading back to school and the “Yellow School Buses” once again dot our roadways. For a majority of the over 121,000 students throughout Erie County, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. Many children will be going to school for the first time and may not be as careful when crossing the street or running to catch the bus. Older children know the routine, but may forget in their excitement to catch up with friends. Unfortunately, each year some bus trips to school end in tragedy -- children are injured or killed in school bus incidents when motorists fail to follow the rules of the road. Data has shown that on a single school day, an estimated 50,000 drivers throughout New York State illegally pass stopped school buses. Although drivers are required to stop for a school bus when it is stopped to load or unload passengers, children should not rely on them to do so, a fact that parents should discuss with their children prior to the start of the school year.

The rules of the road in New York State are specific when it comes to school buses. Drivers need to know and obey the “flashing signal light system” that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions. Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. That is the time to slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped, and that children are getting on or off the bus. Motorists must stop their cars at least 20 feet away from the bus and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. When a school bus stops and flashes its red lights, traffic approaching from either direction must stop before reaching the bus: on a twolane road, on multi-lane highways, or on divided highways. All drivers should know that the fine for passing a stopped school bus ranges from a minimum of $250 and up to $400 and/or up to 30 days in jail for the first violation. Additionally, a conviction places 5 points on your driver’s license and may result in increased insurance premiums. If convicted of three violations in three years, your license will be revoked for a minimum of six months. It goes without saying that even one instance of passing a stopped school bus is unacceptable; it could mean the life of a child.

Parents, it is important to talk with your child, or children, about school bus safety. Children need to know to stand at least three giant steps (6 feet) away from the curb when waiting for the bus to arrive. Children must also wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the doors open, and the driver says it is okay before stepping onto the bus. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk is not while riding on the school bus, but getting on or getting off. Children need to be reminded to be cautious in and around the “danger zone” of the school bus, which is the 10 feet in front, behind and on each side of the school bus.

When the new school year begins in the coming weeks, I remind motorists not to drive distracted, slow down around school zones and be alert for children approaching or exiting school buses. If we all exercise a little extra care and caution, drivers and pedestrians can co-exist and together, and we can all enjoy the upcoming school year safely.

The North Collins Senior Citizens Club is now accepting Non-residents of the Town and Village of North Collins for Associate Membership. Associate Members will pay dues of $15 per year and will be entitled to attend all dinners and functions, the same as residents. All trips and activities, excluding the day trips funded by the Town of North Collins, will be available. Day trips funded by the Town will be available for an extra charge.

The North Collins Senior Citizens Club meets at 11AM on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at the North Collins Senior Community Center, 11065 Route 62, just south of the Village.

George W. Jenney Jr. of Boston, NY passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023. Beloved husband of 66 years to the late Patricia (nee Grimmer) Jenney; father of Mark (Pamela) Jenney; cherished grandfather of Elizabeth (Robert) Jenney-Zielonka, Zachary (Ryan) Jenney and Erik Jenney; half-brother of Charles Rausa. Predeceased by his parents, George W. Jenney, Sr. and Laura (nee Stresing) Rausa and a sister Jean Mae Best. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. George was the owner and operator of Dreams End Farm in Boston, NY for more than 30 years and was well known for his herbs and flowers. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's RC Church, 8175 E. Eden Rd. Eden, NY., on Saturday August 26 at 11 am. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home.

Charles Bailey enterted into rest July 7, 2023. Raymond D. Andolsek

Raymond D. Andolsek, age 89, died Sunday, August 20, 2023 in Olean General Hospital. He was born February 26, 1934 in Gowanda, New York; the youngest son of the late Louis and Rose Voncina Andolsek. He graduated from Gowanda High School in 1953, and from Alfred State College in 1955. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served from 1957 through 1959. Raymond married Martha Gernatt Andolsek on June 24, 1978 in Gowanda, NY. After their marriage, they built a house on Schintzius Road in Eden, where they resided until moving to Kelly’s Place in 2019. Raymond had been employed by Simplex as a troubleshooter for 35 years and took great pride in his work. He was a true outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fly-fish, and golf. He also played a mean game of pool in his day, and was a Buffalo Bills fan to the very end. Ray was a long time member of the Gowanda Country Club, lifetime member of the Slovenian Club in Gowanda and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hamburg. He was the devoted husband of Martha (Gernatt) Andolsek, who survives. Raymond was a stepfather of Marvin Winship, Jan Marie Patton, Craig (Deborah) Winship and the late Marleen Grey. Brother of the late Charles (Shirley)Andolsek, William (Mary) Andolsek, and Elizabeth (Kenneth) Gable. He is also survived by several special nieces and nephews, as well as god children. Marion (Myke) Margaret Anderson

Marion (Myke) Margaret Anderson departed this world Sunday August 6th, peacefully next to her husband. Born in 1940, Marion grew up in Vestal, New York, and later attended SUNY Oswego, where she completed her Bachelors’ in teaching and was a member of Theta Chi Ro sorority. That same year she married her dear husband Warner; together, they had just celebrated 61 years of marriage. A doting wife, mother, sister, and teacher, Marion devoted her career to being an educator. She adored her students and particularly loved teaching math. She finished her career teaching at Build Academy in Buffalo. In her free time, she could be found reading, tending her raspberry bushes, or cheering on the Bills! Marion is survived by her husband, Warner Anderson; daughters Lauren and Hilary; son Corbin; sisters Audrey, Debbie and Judy; and her grandchildren, Cheyenne, Isabelle, and Simon. She is preceded in death by her granddaughter Haley Fouts and sister Barbara. A celebration of life September 16th at Suncliff on the lake. Virginia Irene Winter

Virginia Irene Winter of North Collins, NY passed away at Jennie B. Richmond nursing home at the age of 98. She was born June 5, 1925, and was the daughter of the late George Lowell and Gladys (Montgomery) Brooks. She loved traveling, her husband’s flower and tree projects as well as his vegetable garden canning much of the bounty. Family gatherings meant so much to Ginny and took pride in cooking for them. She is survived by her children: Sharon (late Gary) Parsell of Arcade; Francis (Bonnie) Winter of Springville, NY; and Ronald (Jodell) Winter of Great Falls, MT; sisters: MaryLou Sworts of Delevan and Norma Brooks of Buffalo; she is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son Herbert Lowell; her siblings Francis Brooks, Velma Spencer, and Verna Wojcik.
