The

Ellis Road in Brant. On the work horse is his son Billy Giambrone, who at the time of the photos, was approximately four years old. John is also the father of lifelong Brant residents, Joe Giambrone and RoseAnn Gernatt. Joe and RoseAnn believe that the first and last young men in the photo are “Pecoraro” cousins from Buffalo. The others in the photo were unknown - possibly summertime laborers. The photos were donated to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society by Bill’s wife, Sally. Both photos and preceding description were included in our “Brant-Farnham History Quarterly Journal”. Vol. XIII Wednesday, September 25, 2013, Whole No. 46. In that same journal we had highlighted some various tidbits regarding “horse power” in Brant, a few of which we intend to share with you today.

Within our 1964 Quarto Sequennial Book of the town of Brant 1839-1964 we found the following : “According to the New Topographical Atlas of Erie County, printed by Stone & Stewart: in 1866, the Town of Brant had 293 families and 344 horses or colts.” It should be noted that the sizes of farms were most often judged by the number of horses kept, than by the number of acres tilled.

At one of our historical meetings a few years back, David Berns shared that he and his grandfather would use a mule team to plow the fields in Farnham. They would also use the mule team to cultivate tomatoes at Henry and Maryann Carbeck’s home. Many Farnham neighbors will recall Sam Sicurella Sr. raking his hay using a team of horses (as late as 1980). He would use his horses to rake hay on land behind Jim and Cheryl Russell’s home and also on an open field that once stood beside the Farnham Post Office.

We’ve all probably met someone who operates on this theory. They approach life cheerfully and with zest; they leave you feeling better after you’ve met with them. You’re impressed with their attitude toward life.

And then you find out from someone else that there has been a tragedy in their family or that they are facing a serious personal illness. Through their own actions you would never know that anything was wrong. Yes, they are experiencing pain and sadness, but they are still positive and forward thinking. Suffering is not part of their vocabulary.

None of us will get through life without loss, without sadness, but those need not consume our days. We can choose to learn from the pain, to continue to go forward on days that seem unbearable. We can choose to show others that suffering is, indeed, “optional.”
