us for the event
Warmer weather has arrived, daylight hours are longer and it is finally spring. Motorcycle riders across Erie County are tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the riding season on the open road. Motorcycles are inexpensive to purchase, fuel efficient, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 21,000 registered riders who use their motorcycles for commuting, touring and other recreational activities.
According to the National Safety Council, although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities, with fatalities among motorcycle riders and passengers increasing by 8% from 2020 to 2021.
I ask all motorists, especially new drivers, to be alert to the presence of motorcycles and to share the road safely. Motorcyclists often ride to one side of the lane and at times the rider can hide in your vehicle’s blind spot. Always look twice before turning or changing lanes to be sure your path is clear. Allow more following distance for motorcycles -- two or three car lengths is recommended, more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor. Riders should follow motorcycle safety protocols: wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet that meets or exceeds the U.S. Department of Transportation standard, ride within your skill limits, avoid riding in poor weather conditions, use turn signals, and never ride impaired or distracted. Riders can also benefit from any motorcycle safety programs offered to learn the critical skills needed to ride safely, including seasoned riders who want to reinforce safe driving practices. Course graduates may also qualify for insurance premium discounts with some insurers. Class locations and fees can be found at nysmsp.org.
Before hitting the road this driving season, I remind motorcyclists that their motorcycle registration expires annually on April 30th, so take time to visit the Erie County Auto Bureau to ‘Renew Local’. In addition, those who drive a motorcycle need to be properly licensed, as 43% of fatal bike accidents involve an unlicensed driver. Take the time to get properly licensed – not only because it’s the law, but because doing so may save a life.
I urge everyone to use caution when sharing the road this summer. When we share the road, we share the responsibility of keeping each other safe. Together, the more we raise awareness and follow the rules of the road, the safer everyone is. Let’s ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the season.
For more information on motorcycle licensing and registration visit erie.gov/clerk/autobureau or call the Clerk’s Outreach Center at 716-858-8864.

Right before students went out on Easter Break, we held Kids Night Out in the GYM. This was a chance for students to come in Friday evening to play some games, build Legos, make some crafts, sing karaoke, and even watch a movie. We even brought out the popcorn machine and made a sundae bar for the special occasion. The kids had a lot of fun playing and making memories with their friends. This was a free event sponsored by our HSA, however, we were collecting donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We were able to make a donation of $125 because of Southtowns Catholic School parents' generosity!

The growing Eden Robotic Raiders program will benefit from a grant of nearly $4,000 from the Eden Community Foundation. The grant of $3,925 was awarded by the Eden Community Foundation to the Eden All Sports Booster Club, which applied for the ECF grant in support of the Eden Robotics Team. The grant will fund Eden Robotics' purchase of parts, tools and supplies for the building of robots, community outreach, and to help pay registration fees for team competitions. This past January, the Eden Robotics team traveled to Corning-Painted Post High School to compete against teams from all over New York State. Each school designs, constructs and programs its own robot to accomplish a predetermined set of tasks to earn its team points during several three-minute head-to-head challenges. There were 16 teams in attendance and the Eden Robotic Raiders finished seventh overall, narrowly missing qualification to the Regional Championship in their first year as a team. The team has several other smaller events planned before the school year is over. Led and founded by Eden’s Middle School Tech teacher Brian Smith, the team has grown since its inception. “The excitement and enthusiasm from the team members as well as their parents is really driving this team forward quickly! We are confident that we are going to be one of the teams to beat in the near future."
The Eden Community Foundation was established in 1999 with the aspirational goal of “private giving for the public good.” The Foundation supports projects that strengthen and improve the quality of life of Eden residents and gives preference to projects that improve the hamlet of Eden Center, develop spaces for community activities, or provide new programs or activities for Eden residents.

May we all continue to live each day remembering to “Live as she lived, love as she loved, and give as she gave.”

A baby asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”
“Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”
The child further inquired, “How am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?”
God said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.”
“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”
God said, “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.”
“But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.”
God said, “Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you.”
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, “God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name.”
“You will simply call her, ‘Mom.’”
