Spring Hydrant Flushing Notice

The North Collins Department of Public Works will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the village during the week of May 13, 2024.

Please be advised that flushing may cause some discoloration of water. This does not represent a health hazard. However, customers are cautioned to determine if the water is clear before washing clothes (or any other processing) as staining may occur. We recommend, because the flushing may occur over several days, to check your cold-water system for any discolorations prior to starting any hot water use. If you experience discolored water, run the cold water in all your faucets for approximately 5-10 minutes. It is best to refrain from hot water use, to protect your hot water system, until the cold water runs clear.

Southtowns Catholic School's Varsity Girls Basketball team won the division championship this year. These girls had an incredible season and we're so proud of every single one of them! Fabulous season for this team. We would also like to mention that 3 of our girls took home additional awards: Raegan Davis (grade 7) and Marley Florea (grade 8) made the AllTournament Team and Teagan Ferris (grade 7) was named MVP. May is Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month

A time to remind motorists and motorcyclists to safely share the roadways

The warmer weather has arrived, daylight hours are longer, it is finally spring and time to remind all vehicle drivers and motorcyclists that Motorcycle Safety is Everyone’s Safety as we recognize May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Motorcycle riders across Erie County are tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the riding season on the open road. Motorcycles are inexpensive to purchase, fuel efficient, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 21,000 registered riders who use their motorcycles for commuting, touring and other recreational activities.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and research shows that motorcyclists have the highest proportion of traffic crashes and fatalities each year. In 2021, there were 5,932 motorcyclists killed, accounting for 14 percent of all traffic deaths. This is the highest number of motorcyclists killed since national data collection began in 1975.

I ask all vehicle drivers, especially new motorists, to be alert to the presence of motorcycles and to share the road safely. Motorcyclists often ride to one side of the lane and at times the rider can hide in your vehicle’s blind spot. Always look twice before turning or changing lanes to be sure your path is clear. Allow more following distance for motorcycles -- two or three car lengths is recommended, more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor.

Riders should follow motorcycle safety protocols: wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet that meets or exceeds the U.S. Department of Transportation standard, ride within your skill limits, avoid riding in poor weather conditions, use turn signals, and never ride impaired or distracted. Riders can also benefit from any motorcycle safety programs offered to learn the critical skills needed to ride safely, including seasoned riders who want to reinforce safe driving practices. Course graduates may also qualify for insurance premium discounts with some insurers. Class locations and fees can be found at nysmsp.org.

Before hitting the road this driving season, I remind motorcyclists that their motorcycle registration expires annually on April 30th, so take time to visit the Erie County Auto Bureau to ‘Renew Local’. In addition, those who drive a motorcycle need to be properly licensed, as 36% of fatal bike accidents involve an unlicensed driver. Take the time to get properly licensed – not only because it’s the law, but because doing so may save a life.

Ultimately, safe driving and riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our local roadways. I urge everyone to use caution when sharing the road this summer. When we share the road, we share the responsibility of keeping each other safe. Together, the more we raise awareness and follow the rules of the road, the safer everyone is. Let’s ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the season.

*Bus Driver applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age have a good driving record, already have or be willing to obtain a CDL class “B” license with a P & S endorsement, pass a background check, physical and drug screen. (Options available for CDL class “C”call for more information.) Bus Driving positions start at $23.00/hour. Free Paid Training to get your CDL provided to the right candidates. Candidates for all positions must be dependable and enjoy working with and being around children. Our permanent positions involve working a split day, such as: 6 am-9 am & 1:30 pm-4 pm. Benefits include: paid health insurance, flexible spending account, paid sick & personal time, perfect attendance bonus, Overtime availability, NYS Retirement Pension Plan.

*Bus Attendants must be a minimum of 19 years of age & pass a background check. Pay rate is $15.00. Our substitute positions allow you to pick work as it comes available. We have work available at many different times of the day including field trips, sports runs (from 3:45 pm on) and even work at times on weekends. North Collins NY students recognized as top presenters for their research on climate change at a NASA sponsored event. May 4, 2024 - North Collins Central District students Caden Beecroft, Talon Kane, Ashley Niefergold and Delaney Vanstrom used frost tubes and thermometers, to measure the depth of soil freeze and monitor the temperature outside throughout the winter. On May 3-4 2024, the four eighth grade students presented their research “ Is Our Region Experiencing Climate Change?” at the NorthEast MidAtlantic Globe Student Research Symposium. The event was hosted at the Berks Nature facility in Reading PA. The North Collins team, assisted by their advisor, Science teacher Jennifer Schmitt, concluded that while more data is needed to confirm climate change, the mild winter could lead to more pests in crops and a rise in fleas and ticks this summer.
