I am sure many of us remember Howard Nobbs, as Nobbs & Williams(I bought my first Ford there), then Nobbs Tractor. He is pictured here, front, in the light sweater. He with the other boys pictured belonged to boy scout Troop No. 7 which was on Kromer’s Toad Hollow property. Eventually as the Troop grew they purchased property a few miles north on Sisson Highway. It was called Toad Hollow Camp I am sure you remember Howard as having a quick wit. (some of this information came from Images of America, by Town of Eden Historian Susan Minekime).

NOTICE OF ANNUAL SCHOOL BUDGET MEETING BUDGET REFERENDUM AND ELECTION

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Meeting (Public Hearing) for qualified district residents will be held in the Lake Shore High School Library Media Center, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.

FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Referendum and Election for (1) approval of the Annual School District Budget for the 2024-25 School Year; (2) voting on a proposition regarding the purchase of replacement vehicles; (3) the election of two qualified district residents to the office of Member of the Board of Education; and (4) for the transaction of such other business as is authorized by law, will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., in the Lobby located outside the District Office/Gymnasium of the Lake Shore High School located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York 14006.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a copy of the statement of the amount of money which will be required for the 2024-25 fiscal year for school purposes, exclusive of public monies, may be obtained by any District resident beginning May 7, 2024 through and including May 21, 2024, excluding weekends and holidays, in the main office of each school building between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that all candidates for the office of Member of the Board of Education shall be nominated by petition. Each nominating petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District, and shall state the residence of each signer, and shall state the name and residence of the candidate. Petitions shall be filed in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except Holidays. Each petition must be filed in the District Clerk’s Office by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024. The two candidates who receive the highest number of votes at the Annual Meeting will fill the expired terms of the two incumbents. PROPOSITION NO. 1

Shall the following resolution be adopted:

RESOLVED, that the budget for the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2024, and ending June 30, 2025, as presented by the Board of Education is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law.

PROPOSITION NO. 2

Shall the following resolution be adopted:

RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District”) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: one (1) 30-passenger battery electric school bus at an estimated cost of $149,553.32; two (2) 9-passenger gasoline mobility vehicles at an estimated cost of $77,500 each; and one (1) pick-up truck with snow plow and lift gate at an estimated cost of $75,000; for a total aggregate maximum cost of $379,553.32; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost. No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots and applications for early mail ballot may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Candidates must enter through the main entrance of the High School. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk or her designee at least seven (7) days before the annual meeting and election (May 14, 2024) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or by the day before the election (May 20, 2024) if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. Completed absentee ballots and early mail ballots must be received by the office of the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 21, 2024.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application and/or the military ballot by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 25, 2024.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a list of all persons to whom absentee and early mail ballots are issued will be available for public inspection between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the office of the District Clerk on the five days prior to the annual meeting and election, except Sundays, and such list will be available at the polling place during the annual meeting and election. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Such written challenge shall be transmitted to the District Clerk before the close of the polls.

Sixth grade students at Eden MS-HS in Mrs. Radder and Mrs. Meredith’s classes participated in the 6th annual newspaper chair challenge, “A Chair Fit for a Greek God or Goddess.” Students are tasked to create a chair from newspapers and one roll of masking tape. There are two requirements for this challenge: the chair seat must be 12” from the floor and support an average size adult for a time of 5 seconds. The official chair tester was none other than 11th grader Hailey Mikolajczak, dressed as Hera, Queen of the Gods. When Hailey was in 6th grade, she participated in the first ever newspaper chair challenge. There were three remaining chairs that withstood the test after the first round, and after another round of chair testing, there was one clear winner! Winners were from Mrs. Radder’s homeroom. A Lesson in Design

A lesson in line design captivated the members of the EGSC at their regular meeting March 14 at the Eden Town Hall. Guest speaker, District 8 Judge, Jeanne Burke, demonstrated the guidelines and characteristics and how to create a line design. The step by step process of learning the technique can be beneficial for home designs and competition in flower shows including the upcoming Erie County Fair. Andrea M. (Casseri) Bauer, age 56, of Collins, New York died unexpectedly in Irving, New York on April 6, 2024. Andrea was born February 15, 1968 to Richard A. and Patrica A. Casseri. She was raised in Eden, New York. She later moved and lived near Sacramento, California for 10 years before moving back to Western New York. Andrea was a very active member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was known for her beautiful voice while singing at Masses. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. Besides her parents, Andrea is survived by her fiancée Jeff Rogowski, her two sons, Jonathan (Katie) Bauer and Bryan (Emily) Bauer, a sister Rosemarie (Ken) Grainer, her future stepchildren, Destiny Rogowski and Derek (Yadira) Rogowski and grandson Zuriel. Also survived by many friends and confidants. Andrea was a proud supporter of St. Jude’s Hospital. The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude’s Hospital in her memory. Marilyn (Ricotta) Antos of Eden, NY passed away April 3, 2024 at the age of 84 years. Beloved wife of the late Leo Antos. Loving mother of David (Linda) Antos, Michael Law, Paul (Penny) Antos, Jacki (David) Knauss, Brenda (James) Alfiere and Kelly (Jay) Lucernoni. Linda Ann Bateman

Linda Ann Bateman, 68, Corydon, Ind. (formerly of Angola, NY) passed peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, after a very tough battle with cancer at the Hildegard House in Louisville, KY. She was preceded in death by her father Wallace Bateman, mother Margaret Stebbins (Gorman) and her brother Robert Bateman, all of New York. She is survived by her sister Martha Gearhart of Angola, NY, several nieces, a nephew and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Linda donated her body to the U of L Willed Body Program so her wish was to have a memorial party during her favorite time of year - her birthday in October. A public announcement will be made for details. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Hosparus Unit at Norton Pavilion or the Hildegard House (both in Louisville, KY) or to her niece, Tammy Gearhart of Corydon, Ind., who will be settling her affairs. You never know what others are going through. Maybe if we each wore a sign that listed our troubles, we would be nicer to each other. You could read the list and truly say, “Oh, you lost your job; I know what you’re going through.....” or “I’m really sorry that you’re trying to move your parents, Ihad to do that a few years ago.”

But we don’t wear our troubles on our sleeve. They come out in other ways-- in our language, in poor job performance, by being silent or angry, and many other actions.

Next time you encounter something like this, remember to be kind. We don’t know what has happened in the other’s life to make their day turn sour; we don’t know what battles they are fighting. One kind word might make a difference for them.
