The Eden Community Foundation partnered with the Eden Recreation Department to sponsor a “Slow Shoe” with Slow Roll Buffalo at the Eden Winter Fest on February 4th. Snowshoes from Hamburg’s Gear for Adventure were provided for community members to join Slow Roll guides on a winter snowshoe hike through the woods. Fun was had by all who participated!

Additional recipients from the most recent Eden Community Foundation grant cycle include the Town of Eden and The Eden Regional Farm Museum. The Foundation helped the Town with the relocation of mature donated trees to Town Park areas and the American Legion grounds. The Foundation also funded outdoor exercise stations that will be placed along the Town’s upcoming walking/running trail at Swartz Field. The Foundation awarded The Eden Regional Farm Museum with a grant to fund building restoration and improvements at the Welch Farm home, including the construction of a new visitor exhibit space.

Eden Respite Program Celebrates Mardi Gras

On February 15, 2023, guests and volunteers of the Eden Respite Program, celebrated Mardi Gras for their monthly gathering of held at the Eden United Methodist Church. The program is intended to provide individuals suffering with dementia an opportunity to partake in social, supportive and a secure environment while giving the Caregiver the temporary relief they need.

The Eden Respite Program is in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, NYS Caregivers and Respite Coalition, and the NYS Office for the Aging.

Alma S. Taylor (Stephenson), March 5, 2023 of North Collins, NY entered into rest at the age of 95 Years. Beloved wife of the late Robert S. Taylor. Loving mother of David M. Michele Hauser

Michele Amy Avery Hauser, of Simpsonville passed away and went into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at age 62. Wife of William “Bill” Nicholas Hauser. Born in Buffalo, NY, she was a daughter of the late George Alfred Avery, Sr., and Dorothy Rose Case Avery. Michele attended Canisius College for Fashion Design and Management. She then was the Office Manager of her family's grocery store, Avery's Bells from 1982-1995. She studied Nursing at Trocaire College, received her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Western Governors University, and has been a dedicated nurse for over 20 years at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Michele enjoyed camping with her family and being on the lake. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and loved spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Erica West (Tyler) of Pelzer, Amy Hauser (Jeffrey) of Simpsonville, and Bethany Schmitz (Tyler) of Simpsonville; stepson, William N. Hauser Jr. of Lackawanna, NY; siblings, Stephanie Avery, George Avery Jr., Paul Avery, and Rebecca DeRienzo; and grandchildren, Addisynn, Easton, Jayce, Luke, Landon, Ava, and Ashley. Visitation was at Gray Mortuary. The funeral was Friday, March 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the mortuary chapel, with burial to follow at Robinson Memorial Gardens. Condolences: www. graymortuary.com

Shawn Elaine Caputi (Law) of Salamanca, NY formerly of Irving, NY passed away in her home March 2, 2023 at the age of 55 years. Born April 1, 1967 in Buffalo, NY she was the last born child of the late Edgar and Sheila (John) Law. Beloved wife of the late Chris Caputi Loving mother of Kelly Nephew Jr. (Mariah Stephens), Sarah Nephew (Zachary Miller), Emily Nephew (Bryce Williams) and her step children Cherylyn (Jeff) Burns & Christopher Caputi Jr. Grandmother of Jace, Ava, Kelly III, Anamaii, Mennix, Karson, Kinsley and her step grandchildren Olivia, Jayden, and Lily Mae. Sister of William, Terry, Rick, Tina Law, Cindy Raab, Charles, Phillip, and the late David Law. Also survived by her furbaby Alvin. She was an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians and Beaver Clan. Shawn moved to Williamsville, NY for some time and in 2015 her and her late husband bought a beautiful home that was a fixer up at first, in Salamanca, NY. They had a vision. Shawn had a green thumb for outdoor plants. She loved the home she made for her family and was very proud of it. She loved it most when it was filled with all her loved ones. A few of her favorite memories with her were with her children, grandchildren, siblings, family and loved ones. Shawn enjoyed the outdoors playing with her kids and her grandchildren. Her and her late husband were quite the pranksters together when it came to their kids and grandkids. They always kept the laughter around. Shawn was a free spirit who loved to dance and laugh. She was so silly and she could glow up a room with little to no effort. Shawn was a very beautiful woman, with the biggest heart. She loved everyone with her whole heart and had a hug that would stay with you for a lifetime. Her energy was contagious. Shawn Caputi will be truly missed by all her loved one. She was a daughter, beloved wife, devoted mother and grandmother, baby sister, loved auntie, cousin and good friend. Friends called at the Wentland Funeral Home North Collins, NY. Funeral services took place at the Family Residence. Burial at Memorial Heights Cemetery in Salamanca.

1914: World War I, the war against the German Empire begins. July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918. “Those of German ancestry were called to fight against their own friends and relatives still living in Germany. One ironic twist of fate involved the Steuhring family of Farnham, N.Y.: Mr. Ed Steuhring and his wife Martha (Kuenze) had one son, Edward. When war was declared, the senior Mr. Steuhring was visiting relatives in Germany. As he was still a German citizen, he was drafted into the German army and became an officer. He was killed fighting the Russians on the Eastern front. Many years later, during World War II, his son Edward G. was lost at sea while on a convoy fighting the Germans.” (Excerpt of story written by Fred W. Brinkman for the 1989 Brant History Book.)

1915: March 30th - A “Special to the Buffalo Times” news article regarding the Paul family of Farnham, N.Y. Herbert, Clarence, and Fred, three sons of Mary E. Paul were in various military training camps in the United States, learning the most effective ways of service for their country. Herbert and Fred were at Camp Upton, Yaphank, Long Island and Clarence was at Camp Wadsworth at Spartanburg, S.C. The article stated that “few families in the State are as patriotic as that of Mrs. Mary E. Paul, mother of three sons who have given their services to the government for military duty”. The article also stated that “the boys are the nephews of Supervisor Julius M. Schwert of Angola, whose son Pius L. Schwert recently enlisted in the navy.”

It takes a leap of faith to set off into the unknown, to set a course based on some calculations -- and hope. The early explorers were truly remarkable beings. They braved the oceans in small boats that amaze us when we see replicas of them today. They were gone for years at a time and often did not have much hope of ever returning home.

But they were intent on “discovering” what lay beyond the horizon of their knowledge. Even when contemporary wisdom said they would fall off the edge of the world, they charted a course and sailed west. Seeing nothing but “sea” for months, they ultimately found a world filled with new people, new plants and new possibilities. Your voyages may be shorter, but the discoveries are no less exciting.
