Town of Eden is Hiring a Director of Recreation

The Town of Eden is actively looking for a Director of Recreation. This is a part-time position (19 hours per week). The candidate will have good knowledge of recreation theory and practices; good knowledge of the organization and operation of recreation facilities and equipment; working knowledge of municipal administration; ability to promote, plan and organize municipal recreation activities; good communication skills, ability to plan and supervise the work of others; sound professional judgment; ability to work well with the public and with groups of all ages; resourceful; dependable; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum qualifications:

(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited or N.Y. State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of experience in physical education or recreation field; OR

(b) Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience as indicated in (a); OR

(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.

A rousing game of “chair beach” volleyball set the stage for guests at the Eden Respite Program in January. Despite the cold weather, the monthly gathering of the Eden Respite Program was held Wednesday January 18, 2023 at the Eden United Methodist Church. Guests and volunteers enjoyed a day of activities centered around the theme of sun and sand, and/or sun and snow. Many reminisced of sunny days at the beach, building sand castles and participating in water sports, or shushing down snow covered slopes and ice skating or creating snow angels and snowmen. Sing-a-long music was provided by guitarist Jim Coupe and “Memories in Making” watercolor painting was directed by Judy Marek. Design material of warm sunny places and snow related objects were used to inspire the the artists. A lunch of piping hot cream of vegetable soup, accompanied with sides of roasted potato skins and tossed salad was created by chef Karen Kline. Warm fresh berry crumble concluded the meal. The Eden Respite Program is designed for caregivers of individuals suffering from dementia, and is in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, NYS Caregivers Respite Coalition and NYS Office for the aging.

It was fun to hitch hike to Hamburg to the Palace Theatre to see the ,Western Movies and sometimes the Mysteries We sat in the balcony once in a while. I remember the bathroom's were under the stage. On the way home we walked to Sturms Ice cream shop on Main Street and had a drink called the Brown Cow, which was really a Root Beer Float. If we hurried and got to the corner of Pierce and Evans St., we could catch a ride home with Frank Meyer in his big Buick. Frank had a Large Appliance Store in Buffalo, and lived in his estate on Jennings Road in Eden.

Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use I implore you of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings and that I may prasie God with you and all the elect forever. I promise. O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. P.S.

A Timeline for the Town of Brant, Part 15 Continuation…

1899: September 18 - “The Great Fire of Farnham”. The following is an excerpt regarding the fire, written by Fred W. Brinkman for our 1989 Brant History Book: “The village watchman discovered the blaze which had started in Schwert’s barn and was caused by a spark from a passing locomotive. His cries awakened the sleeping residents, and a bucket brigade was formed but to no avail. The flames soon spread across the tracks to the Caul House and Brinkman’s Department Store and to about 25 small, but pretty homes built to house immigrants working at the [Erie Preserving] factory.”

1911: Pingitore’s Band is one of the popular bands in Farnham and surrounding communities.

1911: The Fred Brinkman Agency, Inc. began in 1911, established by Fred J. Brinkman. The business operated out of his home, which was located on Commercial Street in the Village of Farnham. His son Fred W. continued with the insurance business in the same location. To be continued. Submitted by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

The Fred Brinkman Agency, Inc. began in 1911, established by Fred J. Brinkman, who worked out of his family home located on the corner of Church and Commercial Streets in the Village of Farnham. His son Fred W. continued with the family business until his own retirement. The entire property was donated to Holy Cross Lutheran Church as per the generosity and final wishes of the Fred W. Brinkman Family. The home and barns are no longer standing, demolished only a few years ago. In this photo, the men are shown laying the water lines for the village

This song was created as an international message of love that could be easily understood by people of different nations. The simple lyrics reflected feelings during the “Summer of Love” in 1967.

More than fifty years later, its sentiment still resonates with us and makes it a perfect song for Valentine’s Day. As our lives seem to have become more complicated and a divisive atmosphere fills our world, maybe it would be good to take a few steps back toward that idealistic worldview. Maybe love is really all we need.

We pronounce love to our spouses, our children and other family members. Maybe we need to widen that circle of love and make it known to others. Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to do that. Surprise someone with a message of love this year.
