Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use I implore you of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings and that I may prasie God with you and all the elect forever. I promise. O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. P.S.
Member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Eden Garden Study Club celebrated its 90th year anniversary by hosting a standard flower show entitled “Cheers to 90 Years.” The event was held October 5th and 6th, 2024, at the Eden United Methodist Church. National Garden Clubs, Inc. provides education, resources and national networking opportunities for its members to promote the love of gardening, floral design and civic and environmental responsibilities. The “Cheers to 90 Years” show is the club’s first show in 22 years. The community responded to the show in record numbers as a steady flow of visitors attended the two day event. Specimens of horticulture and classes of interpretive design, including a presentation of a botanical class and three educational displays captivated visitors and two panels of judges. In addition to all entries receiving recognition of first through fourth place ribbons, club member Sharon Baur received the award of horticulture excellence, Judy Preischel received the horticultural design award, and Michelle Wilson was recognized for the designers choice award and the award of design excellence. A special class entitled “Remember When” was open to honorary past president members. Past president Cheryl Colvin tied with current club president Dawn Seggio for the people’s choice award. As a point of interest, also available was the opportunity to view the church building’s 1812 sanctuary, hosted by the Eden Historical Society vice president, Carol Lewis. On Saturday, a special luncheon was served to honored guests and eighth district judges by club hostess Lynn Bratek and her team. Harpest, Annette Ieda performed background music during the two day event, adding a melodic and relaxed ambiance during the show. August 4, 1961 – October 22, 2024. Elizabeth Ann (Beth) Fernandez of Eden NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 22, 2024. Beth taught Spanish at West Seneca East High School for 31 years, serving as department chair until her retirement in 2021. She also served as a building representative for her local union, West Seneca Teachers Association. Beth loved the challenge of teaching and had a special place in her heart and work for students who needed the most help and support. Her colleagues describe her as fierce, loyal, honest, and “true blue.” Many have expressed the positive impact she had on her students and on their own teaching practice. Beth loved books, fishing, Americana music (John Prine was her favorite) and Scrabble. She loved her family, her school community and Friday Happy Hours. Beth was preceded in death by her father, John F. Blatner, her mother, Dorothy Blatner Laco, her step-father, Emil Laco and her sister, Marcia (Jeffrey) Vann. She is survived by her loving husband, Javier “Jay” Fernandez, their son, Juan, siblings Donna (Patrick) Hughey, William (Mary Cowhey) Blatner, Jane (Daniel) Thompson and Peter (Shanon) Blatner. Beth was adored by her many nieces and nephews and by her large extended family in south Texas. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family asks that donations be made in Beth’s name to Doctors Without Borders in lieu of other expressions of sympathy. Words of sympathy may be left on www. LaingFuneralHome.com

“We preach the virtues of democracy abroad. We must practice its duties here at home. Voting is the first duty of democracy.”
--Lyndon B. Johnson
Election Day is almost here and it is the responsibility of every registered voter to make sure that they get out and vote for the candidates of their choice. You may be tired of the campaign hype, promises, and disparaging advertisements, but your vote is important and is the basis of the freedoms we enjoy.
Citizens of many countries would relish the opportunity to vote for leaders without being threatened… to have a choice of candidates. Don’t take your rights for granted.
On Tuesday, remember that the early patriots went to war against a world power so that they might have a voice in their own governing. You still have that voice. Vote.
