Eden-North Collins Singers Perform Favorite Oldies

Our brand new State of the Art low pressure softwash system safely and effectively cleans and sanitizes ALL exterior surfaces without damage caused by conventional pressure washing, adding value to your home.

It was back to school with fun filled memories of the good old days for the attendees of the Eden Respite Program. Respite volunteers and guests met Wednesday September 18, 2024 at the Eden Methodist Church. Activities of painting, playing bingo, participating in chair exercises, and looking at old yearbooks captured the morning agenda. A “school lunch”, which was served on a cafeteria tray and appointed with tomato soup, a grilled cheese sandwich, tossed salad and a sippy cup for dessert. A special performance by the newly formed Eden-North Collins Singers was the highlight of the day. Favorite oldies, particularly patriotic songs were enjoyed by all. Since 2015, the Eden Respite program has been offering a free respite to families with loved ones suffering from dementia.

The Eden Garden Study Club (EGSC) joined Eden residents to participate in the town wide garage sale September 14, 2024. Club members baked items of bread, cookies, cakes, pies and Stromboli, including a selection of gluten free items. Located in the Chamber park on the corner of West Church and Main Streets, many visitor's and patrons enjoyed sitting in the park to sample their purchases. Curbside deliveries were also offered to individuals needing assistance. Pictured above L-R, EGSC vice president Lana Gardner and past president Marlene Sullivan.

Pinwheels for Peace

Art students in Mrs. Braun and Mrs. Nicastro's classes created pinwheels to celebrate the United Nations resolution for a day of International Peace. The resolution was passed in 1981 and in 2001, slated to be observed on September 21, annually. The International Day of Peace is supposed to be a day in which violence, wars, and fighting is paused across the globe. It's a day to bring awareness to the fact that we, as individuals, are each responsible for our contributions to attaining and sustaining peace.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

There is something about the winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, replace, wood stove, or portable space heater.

• Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Never use your oven to heat your home.

• Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

• Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.

• Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company.

FACT: Half of home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.

• Draw a map of your

PREPARE

• Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, as well as inside and outside every sleeping area.

• Test smoke alarms monthly, and replace the batteries if needed.

• Purchase and learn how to safely use a fire extinguisher.

• Create a fire escape plan with your family, reviewing and practicing it twice a year.

• Your fire escape plan should include two exit points from every room, as well as a designated outdoor meeting spot.

• Make sure everyone in your family knows when and how to call 911 or the fire department.

PREVENT

• Turn off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep.

• Never leave a candle burning unattended, and consider replacing traditional candles with battery-operated flameless versions.

• Keep matches and lighters out of reach from children, and make sure they know never to play with these items.

• Replace or repair loose plugs, exposed wiring or frayed extension cords, and avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

• Keep any items that can catch fire at least three feet away from cooking and heating devices.

• Remain in the kitchen when cooking food. Always turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen even for a brief period of time.

STAY ALIVE

• In the event of a fire, yell “Fire” repeatedly and evacuate immediately. Once outside, call 911 or the fire department, and never reenter a burning building for any reason.

• If a door or door handle feels warm to the touch, do not open it. Use an alternate escape route.

•If you must walk through smoke, get as close to the ground as possible to escape under the smoke, closing doors behind you.

• If your clothing catches fire, always remember to stop, drop and roll, covering your face with your hands.

• If you can’t escape a room, close the door and cover vents and door cracks with a towel or cloth to keep out smoke. Call 911 or the fire department, and signal for help at the window with a piece of cloth or a flashlight.

• If you are unable to reach pets or someone in the home needing assistance, evacuate, call 911 and tell the emergency operator and firefighters where the person or pet is located.

PENNYSAVER DEADLINE

TUESDAYS AT 12PM

“«A Psalm of praise.» Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” - Psalm 100

Clark Cyrus Phillips passed into Eternal glory on September 23, 2024 at his home in North Collins, NY. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sue Streeter Phillips, four children, Cynthia (Paul) Meyer, David (Ann) Phillips, Peter (Julia) Phillips, and Lisa (Gregory) Porter, as well as his 15 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Clark is also survived by his siblings, Forman (Zlata) Phillips, Herbert (Theresa) Phillips, and Sarah (Bud) Halsey, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Andrew, his parents, David Bloomingdale Phillips and Dorothy Stillwell Phillips, and his sister Barbara (Warren) Bower. Clark was born on May 29, 1934 on a dairy farm in Troy, NY. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell University. There he met Sue Streeter and was married on June 16th, 1956. He worked as an assistant cooperative extension agent in Chenango County until he learned of a 41-cow dairy operation for sale in Western NY in 1958. He was named “Outstanding Young Farmer” of Erie County in 1965 and continued to grow his successful dairy operation over the years, moving the main facilities from Angola to North Collins in 1988. The business was originally established as “Clue Farms”, but renamed “Phillips Family Farm” when his older son, David, joined him in running the business. He was a long-time member of the local Farm Bureau, holding various leadership roles, and leveraged his many personal and business connections

to update his farming techniques and practices to the most modern dairy capabilities. Sharing his saving faith in Jesus Christ was Clark’s highest personal priority. He was very active in the Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International as a national board member, participating in domestic and international mission trips, and sharing the colored bead story of salvation wherever he could. He and Sue spent several years in “semi-retirement” as missionaries, establishing and managing a dairy operation in Oradea, Romania in support of the Caminul Felix orphanage. He belonged to the First Church of Evans, was a longtime member and served on the board of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Orchard Park, and in his later years was a prominent member of the North Collins Wesleyan Church. He also shared his talents and knowledge as a docent for the Schoolhouse #8 History Center and Museum in North Collins. Clark considered himself “One Lucky Guy” in the memoir he penned during the Covid shut down and also “published” a couple booklets of sayings/proverbs. He was a card-carrying member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, another of his passions, and wrote a book of lesser-known player statistics called “(Almost) All You Ever Wanted to Know About Major League Baseball”. He will be remembered most for bringing many to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and his ability to lighten any conversation with a quip, pun or joke. A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 19th at North Collins Wesleyan Church, 10470 Bantle Rd., North Collins, NY with visitation starting at 1:30 pm. A meal will follow the celebration at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Timothy School in South Sudan via Kids In Crisis, International (kidsincrisis.com), Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International (fcfi.org) or North Collins Wesleyan Church (northcollinschurch. com). Arrangements by Wentland Funeral Home North Collins, NY.

A THOUGHT TO REMEMBER…

The lyrics of a popular song from the sixties proclaimed, “slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last....”. That’s still good advice today! Just think of it-- Halloween decorations have been in the stores for weeks, newspapers and magazines are counting down the days until Christmas, and it will soon be 2025!

Do you wonder where the year has gone? Does it seem like the beginning of summer was just yesterday? Are you amazed that it is already October? Are you already starting to panic about the holidays?

Maybe we do need to just slow down, to take a deep breath and relax, to enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee as we relish fall’s warm, sunny days. The projects will still be there tomorrow. Become a procrastinator for a day.

Find a lovely spot and just sit. Listen to the birds, the breeze. Watch the sun set. Enjoy the vibrant colors of fall. Make not just the morning, but the whole day last.
