THE BARSTOW PROPHETS GROW UP

The Barstow Prophets - Just American Music, HeyDay Records, July 2016

On their first CD “Well, if I’d known she was your sister,” The Barstow Prophets hit all the easy pitches; blues/rock, surf, acoustic country, Texas shuffle and even a very nonconformist jam at the end. On their follow up, Just American Music released in July 2016, the band delivers a much more complex collection of songs and vibes. On the opening track, “Miss Louisiana,” new band member Mike Miller’s lead guitar is half Clapton, half David Gilmore over a very dark steamy swampy driving beat. The CD does have an overall “southern” feel to it without falling into the redneck, NASCAR jingoism record bin. Probably the best examples are “Raining in New Orleans” and “Ole #7,” where the band lays down rock solid groves and breathes life into the CD’s title. Three songs however stand out as solid steps forward for the Prophets, as they like to be called. First, if the unexpected Irish bar song “Shamrock” does not bring a smile to your face and thirst to your throat then you may want to check your pulse – it has all the elements of a great modern Irish tune. I suspect that this is a nod to songwriter Chris Whelton’s New England/Boston heritage and it could easily become a St. Patrick’s Day Anthem. Whelton wrote the whole song sitting at the bar at The Shamrock (a favorite Irish pub in Murrieta), in fifteen minutes. The song transitions from classic traditional Irish (fiddle and mandolin) to Celtic rock (electric guitar and full band). Next, producer David Newton and Whelton crafted “Dead or Lost” around the beautiful, unexpected, cello work of Michelle Packman. The 90’s head banger tune is

www.facebook.com/EchoAndBuzz

both mesmerizing and gritty at the same time, and Michael Bacarella’s guitar at the end only drives the nail further into the listener’s head. Finally, I first got a glimpse of the new CD in December 2015 when I heard the rough cut of “Nobody’s Waiting.” It tugged my heartstrings then, and made me want to hear the collection. Completed, the song is impressive. It is my favorite on the new cd, featuring 40-year veteran musician Ron Reiss on pedal steel guitar. A great country song, especially a tear jerker, has to be clean, tight, short and especially well orchestrated. Whelton’s story of love lost is straight to the point and Reiss’ beautiful pedal steel melody cuts straight to the heart. The album is full of stories like this one...love, loss, tragedy and straight-up crazy truth that we all walk through in this life, but Chris documents it for us all to hear. The cd is not without its missings. First, I miss the blues rock guitar mojo the band created on the first cd and I hope it returns on the next outing. Next, although I really like the addition of Miller singing backup vocals and harmonies, many vocals were too low in the mix for me, especially on “12 Bottles of Wine.” Most of the songs are stories and it’s imperative to hear each word. On a broader note, all of the musicians delivered a great performance, with drummer Garrett Morris again standing out. David Newton’s production and engineering are first rate, even with the added challenges of recording violin, cello and pedal steel. Whelton’s storytelling lyrics are catchy and dark (I might be sober, but I am not okay) and he’s proven his skill in several genres. I like the diversity of the album, but as far as a genre, it is

hard to label them. I feel that this album is a compilation of all they CAN do and a great storytelling platform. They seem to have a bit of everything from retro 70’s, Blues, and Country, just hoping for a bit more cohesion on the next cd. For now, I’ve got the cd mixed into my commute playlist and it works.

by HP Dawlings

look forward to the next collection of stories Chris Whelton and his team choose to share with the broad audience of listeners. There is something for everyone with The Barstow Prophets - Just American Music. Enjoy!

This is Whelton’s fourth CD with producer David Newton and I really,

LUCKY STONE

Since mid-December, 2015 The Lucky Stone Irish Pub in Old Town has quickly morphed into the premier live music venue in Old Town Temecula. No other venue offers more regular live music shows nor do they offer the diversity in music. What is it that distinguishes The Lucky Stone from other music venues in the area? Well our customers tell us repeatedly. It’s the vibe, dude. It’s the vibe. It starts with the building. Many restaurants and bars in Southern California are located in typical metal and glass store-front strip malls. Outside, they look like every other retail shop. It’s not until you get inside that you can actually get the “feel” of the place. The Lucky Stone Irish Pub is fortunate not only because it is directly located on Old Town Front Street, but we are located in the 1960’s era woodstructured, Rancon Building with wood walks, wood patios and many wood doors and windows. So it truly has a rustic facade inside and out. Additionally, the first level is elevated 6 feet above street level so the patio has the best viewing of Old Town Front Street activity. Most afternoons, you’ll find The Stone patio lined with regular customers, smoking cigars, drinking cold beers, taking the sun and watching Old Town go by. Friday and Saturday evenings our patio is packed with customers who even take to dancing outdoors. The Stone patio is THE best viewing spot for all parades and Rod Run events. When you enter into The Stone, you immediately sense the warmth from the brick and reclaimedwood wall facades. The Stone is only 800 square

Because Music Is Life

feet so needless to say it has great intimacy whether there is two or twenty people in the bar. You can literally have a conversation from across the room. Red velvet curtains adorn the front stage windows, the natural lighting is soft and warm, the beer cold and the bartenders friendly and sincere. But truth be told, we have the best customers at The Lucky Stone and it’s their mood when at The Stone that completes the “vibe.” We consider ourselves to be blessed to have so many great regular customers. Which, frankly is the only real way to measure success when you are building a brand. We hear an awful lot that The Lucky Stone is the “Cheers” of Temecula. We’ll take that comparison any day of the week. What else separates The Stone from others? If you look closely at our logo, you will see the tag line states “An Ale & Music House.” The Lucky Stone is not a restaurant nor an eatery that is also attempting to be an entertainment venue. Eat where you must, but drink, chill and catch great musical entertainment at The Lucky Stone. We are an Irish Pub, no doubt, but when it comes to music, we are by no means locked into any one genre. We currently are open Wednesdays thru Saturday and we offer six live shows in those four days, each and every week of the year. Our “Live n Unplugged” open-mic show on Wednesdays features singer/ songwriters over $5.00 drinks all night. Thursday thru Saturday afternoon/evenings, we feature all types of solo performers whether it be Astra Kelly, Byron Abel, Tim Walsh, Joe Gillaspie or Tim Cash, just to name several. Friday and Saturday nights, this quaint venue goes big and we bring the house down religiously every weekend with great live bands and The Stone becomes one of the hottest spots to juke and jive the night away.

It has been an exciting road since we opened late last year and we are already growing. We have just decided that in October of 2016 we are going to expand The Lucky Stone and we will literally more than double in size. Walls are coming down and we will have two stages and a much larger dance floor for our Friday and Saturday night gigs. Not to worry though, as we fully realize that one of the most appealing characteristics of The Stone is in fact its intimacy and we will ensure that the “vibe” remains secure. So, next time in Old Town, stop into The Lucky Stone for a pint and some great music. Cheers!

THE MOMENT with Vince Mendoza

by Steve Steinberg

Photo property of Vince Mendoza.

There’s always an older brother, sister, cousin... someone to teach you about the things your parents either do not know enough about or think you are too young to know about. Subversive things like Mad Magazine, late night sketch comedy shows and, of course, Rock and Roll. Lake Elsinore resident and omnipresent performer Vince Mendoza knows exactly who that person is from his past. The person who brought the joy of rock and roll to his pre-adolescent attention. The person who brought Stevie Wonder (“Talking Book” album) and a live recording of Elton John into his life. A person who selflessly shared the music with him and probably changed the course of his young life. “I had a cousin who was from Hawaii and stayed with us for about a month. She was older and could buy records. She bought four albums one day. They were the first albums I ever heard. I would lay on the floor listening, enamored. She saw how much I liked them so she gave them to me. It was a pivotal moment and to this day when I hear early Elton John songs it just stops me in my tracks.” By age 12, Mendoza was listening to rock and roll any chance he could. He loved the sound of the guitars and when he would see his uncle who played guitar he would ask to show him how to play. But the passion to play the instrument for the next 40 years started on a normal day with a rare occurrence, “My mom, who never picked me up from school, was waiting at the front and said ‘get in’. She had a guitar in the back which she got at a garage sale, and she took me to my first lesson. The whole point was to keep me out of trouble. I don’t think she meant for it to become as serious as it became.” After 6 months of lessons the teacher wanted Mendoza to learn jazz guitar, “but I was really into

rock and roll so I started to lose interest.” His mom intervened and told the teacher to change directions and teach him what he wanted to learn. And she bought him a new acoustic guitar. “She was the catalyst. She knew I was really into it and bought me this really nice guitar. It was motivating because I had a cool sounding guitar. I had to put clothes pins on the tuning pegs on my garage sale guitar to keep them from rattling.” Mendoza spent the next few years learning his favorite rock songs like every person of his generation. “By lifting the needle moving it back and setting it back down,” Mendoza says while mimicking lifting the needle of a record player. Mendoza credits this trial and error learning strategy for his ability to hear something once and then play it back almost immediately. “You had to really listen to the music and hear the guitar.” By the time Mendoza was sixteen years old he was jamming with friends and was ready to audition for a local band. “They were really good and had been playing together for awhile. I was excited, so I saved up money from my busboy job at a restaurant and bought a Gibson Les Paul. I went to audition and played this Rush song, La Villa Strangiato, because it had this solo I liked. Another pivotal moment was hearing that solo for the first time. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was. I was good enough to join the band when they heard that, and we played together for many years. In fact, I just had a phone call from the other guitarist. We are still friends after 40 years.” While Mendoza loves playing with other musicians and likes the idea of a “band of brothers” making music together, as he became a young adult and entered college he started to think about his future.

He was not sure that pursuing stardom as a member of a band was right for him. “For me, I started to be interested in being someone a lot of people would hire. So I set my focus on it because I thought I had a better chance of being successful as a hired musician rather than hoping my band makes it.” He was aware of session musicians like Larry Carlton (Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand), Steve Lukather (Toto, Boz Skaggs, Aretha Franklin) and Michael Landau (Joni Mitchell, Seal, Miles Davis). “One day they would be playing with Don Henley and the next they are playing with the Tubes. I thought that was awesome.” To be successful as a “hired gun” would require some changes, and Mendoza was up for the challenge. “I was at Long Beach State and got an offer for a full ride scholarship at USC in the guitar program. I ended up moving to North Hollywood where things were happening. I met Eddie Van Halen the first day at the job I had there. Then I played on a session with Michael Jackson. Soon I was on tour with Tiffany. I had put myself in the right place to get work,” he notes. Of his extended gig with Tiffany, they played Las Vegas for several months, Mendoza recalls what a great voice she has. One of the songs she performed was “Me and Bobby McGee” and he says, “every night she would light up the room with that song. I would tell her, ‘the way you sing isn’t on your records.’” As a session musician Mendoza has toured Finland, played extended gigs in India and jammed around Thailand. He has seen parts of the world he never thought of visiting but he is thankful for all the opportunities. One reason for his success is his Continued page 14

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1440 On a night where it seemed everyone on the streets of downtown Los Angeles was scampering for the Adele show at Staples Center, a few people in the know were waiting in a line outside an art/performance space three blocks away. Under the shadow of Staples Center, and perhaps under the shadow of Adele herself, one by one the people in the line uttered the password in speakeasy fashion and were ushered into an industrial space to hear local singer and songwriter Danielle Taylor debut the music from her new album “1440.” Seen around the Temecula Valley, Taylor is usually accompanied by only her husband, Brian Kimble, on bass. This night she would be accompanied by a full compliment of musicians and backup singers. This should have been the first sign that this night would be different for the fans of Taylor, who has had a series of fortunate events and capitalized on some great opportunities to elevate herself to the point in her career that she can celebrate her record release with this sort of soirée. These events and opportunities were detailed in the July 2015 issue of Echo and Buzz.

www.EchoAndBuzz.com

Taylor sold tickets to this event through her website trying to attract those who have supported her and her music for the past several years. During that time she has built a loyal following in both the Temecula Valley and central to northern California primarily playing wineries. According to Taylor she chose Los Angeles because it is the “big city” and because it is in-between the “tops (fans from the north) and the bottoms (fans from Southern California).” The whole gala came together pretty fast, according to Taylor. The hardest part was rehearsal with the band members and backup singers. “We (Taylor and Kimble) basically had to do individual rehearsals because of everybody’s schedules,” she says. “The night of the show was the first night everyone played together.” The music did not suffer for the lack of a unified rehearsal. Taylor playing her trademark piano/keyboard, rose to the occasion in a first set comprised of songs from her first two recordings and a couple covers. She played these with new energy created by the excitement of the crowd and her anticipation of their reaction to the

by Steve Steinberg

new songs which would comprise the second set. From the first note and chanting background vocals of the first new song, “Warrior,” everyone present knew they were in for something new. With low drum beats and no cymbals, drummer Matt Luchic and Kimble on bass set the rhythms, and Taylor’s singing sent the evening into a stratosphere unlike her fans had known. The lyrics were familiar. Strength in the face of adversity. Asserting the power of the individual to persevere even when hope has dwindled. Tonight, though, the music was equal to the task. It rose to a crescendo at the right moments and fell into a hushed tone when it needed to. Asked about the new sound, Taylor is eager to share. “I needed a distinct sound. Previously I had tried to sound like other artists but I wanted a sound that was like me. I asked myself, what would I like. And I think I found it.” By the reaction of the crowd it seems she found what they like, too. Taylor drifted through her set-list and the crowd eagerly awaited each song,

wondering what would come next. Each new song did not disappoint. And when the music stopped the excitement in the room continued. For those in the room, a complimentary copy of the new CD was part of a gift bag that consisted of a series of items handcrafted by Taylor especially for this event. But the people really wanted to listen to that CD. The live music was compelling and the studio CD does not disappoint. A recurring theme in Taylor’s lyrics is that people are never alone in the tribe of people around them. There is always respect, love and strength to be found all around us. As Taylor performed her new songs she came out from under the shadow, and she was sure to have felt the support from those in the room, all who were glad they were not at Staples Center. Attitude and Self-Discipline Well... This is the first article for the new column Biz-BUZZ. We will be delving into many aspects of the entertainment industry but mostly in the area of business. Sounds dry doesn’t it? But here is the good part, the part where you get paid. Hopefully along the way we can impart some tricks, ideas and wisdom in the area of promoting yourself or your band, brand, or your craft and show you what other successful entertainers have done. We’ll both learn something in the process. One of the things that I find fascinating about successful songwriters, comedians, actors, and entertainers in general is their attitude. Be it good or bad their attitude shows through driven by their passion. Most people that I have studied who make it in this industry have something in common, an attitude of winning. They truly believe they can do it. Usually the hardest part for them is understanding why all the other people around them can’t see their genius. It’s not really an ego thing it’s a confidence. The people that seem to be the luckiest at getting the good gigs always seem to be the ones who work really hard at getting lucky. It takes a lot more than a good strong attitude to succeed but it’s a good first step. One of the things that seem to come up in my research is the theme of self-discipline. This is probably best stated in the book “No Excuses” by Brian Tracy a quote from Elbert Hubbard which says, “Self-discipline is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.” There a ton of other principles that will help you succeed but without self-discipline good luck getting them to work. Having a system with some self-discipline works. Personally I’m kind of a systems guy. I like to have some sort of format to keep track of where I’m going, If it is just practicing my guitar, song writing, whatever. If you create a system, habit, routine, you will know if you are getting anywhere. For instance many years ago I played in a band that bragged that they were always current with the top 40 radio hits, so it was a constant struggle to learn the new material week after week. I developed a system, it was simple but it worked for me. I would grid out a piece of paper five squares across and ten down, fifty squares in all. Every time I practiced a new song and got it right I would check off one of the squares. In other words I had to play it right fifty times. That usually did it. I rarely had to go the full fifty before I could do it in my sleep. Sometimes three to five times and you’ve got it. The thing is that it is a system. Not brain surgery by any means but if you apply it with the self-discipline required, even an ape could do it. I know that it takes the romance out of it but it kept me from spending my days asking, “Do you want fries with that?” Staying in a paying band allowed me to pursue the more creative aspects of the world. 13 The programs then send a Notice of Termination to the Probation Department which file Probation violations with the Court, and either you’re back in front of the judge, or an arrest warrant is issued if you fail to appear in court.

E&B: How else do people violate their Probation? Chris:

Chris Whelton is the frontman and guitar player for The Barstow Prophets. Chris has also been a lawyer for 25 years and is one of the most experienced Criminal Defense attorneys in the area, representing juveniles and adults in all Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego, misdemeanor and felony courts.

E&B: Chris, a fellow musician just mentioned that they have to “go back to court for violating their probation,” does that mean that they are going to jail? What’s the difference between probation and parole?

Chris: If a defendant pleads guilty, or is found guilty by a jury, then they are sentenced by a judge. In misdemeanor cases the judge can either sentence the defendant to be locked up in county jail (custody) or grant them Informal, sometimes called summary, probation. It’s essentially a series of promises to the court, like pay a fine, take a class, do house arrest or work release and most of all, don’t get arrested and convicted of another crime. Keep your promises and you never go to county jail, break your promises and the court gets to re-sentence you.

E&B: OK, sounds simple enough, what about felonies? Chris: In every Felony case the judge can either sentence you to be locked up in State Prison, or grant the Defendant Formal Probation, which includes all those same promises but it can also include some time in the local county jail, which must be less that 366 days. Again, if you break your promise, the Court gets to re-sentence you and this time you might go to State Prison.

E&B: And parole? Chris: Inmates are released from a State Prison on a grant of Parole from the State Prison Parole Board, with conditions (promises) that they must abide by. If you violate your parole you go straight back to the Parole Board and State Prison, not back to the trial court. Most Parole violations are an automatic 1 year back in State Prison for the violation.

E&B: How much power does a probation officer have? Chris: Informal probation is served without supervision by a probation officer. It’s literally “no news is good news.” Formal probation requires that you report to and be supervised directly under the authority of a county probation officer. The Court decides the length of your probation term. Probation terms are generally three to five years. However, you can be placed on probation for up to the maximum time for which sentence of imprisonment might be pronounced for the crime of which you were convicted (Penal Code 1203a).

E&B: Why do people violate their Probation? Chris: Usually because they get lazy and they get kicked out of programs that are a condition of their probation. The Domestic Violence Class is 52 weeks, if you miss two in a row you get kicked out. That’s very common. Same for the long DUI classes. Or people stop going to the Cal Trans Work Release programs.

Failure to pay all court-ordered fines and fees, such as restitution to a victim; Failure to appear at required court hearings or progress review dates; Failure to participate in and complete court-ordered counseling or treatment; Failure to complete court-ordered community service; Failure to report to your probation officer as required; Failure to comply with your probation officer’s instructions; Failure to maintain employment; Failure to submit to a drug test, or a positive (dirty) result; Failure to attend court-ordered AA meetings and/or a Mothers Against Drunk Driving; Failure to enroll in and complete a required Alcohol Education Program; Failure to attend court-ordered Narcotics Anonymous meetings in a drug-related case; Being under the influence or in possession of illegal drugs or medication for which you do not possess a valid prescription, which is also a new case AND a violation of probation; Being in possession of contraband – for example, being caught with alcohol if your probation conditions mandate that you abstain from using, possessing or having access to alcohol; Being in possession of a firearm for any felony conviction or in any misdemeanor DV case; Being in a restricted area –for example, being in an area known for illegal drug sales if you are on probation for a drug-related offense; Failure to wear the GPS bracelet ankle monitor for house arrest, sex or gang offenses and alcohol detection, “SCRAMM”; Having contact with prohibited persons such as any children as a result of a sex offense conviction involving a minor; Violating an Emergency Protective Order or Temporary/Permanent Restraining Order in a domestic violence case; Absconding – meaning leaving the county or state without the permission of your probation officer; and...

E&B: Traffic tickets? Chris: No, those are infractions and generally they do not violate probation, unless of course it’s driving on a suspended license.

E&B: Do you go straight to jail for a VOP? Chris: Whether you are on informal or formal probation, if you are suspected of violating your probation terms or conditions, any peace officer, including a probation or parole officer may arrest you on site without a warrant, or the court may issue a warrant for your arrest (Penal Code 1203.2). Generally though, you get a written Notice of Violation and Court Date in the mail. Then you go to court to face a probation violation (or “revocation”) hearing in front of the judge. If you are found guilty of violating your probation, the judge is permitted to revoke your probation and do one of four things: 1. Reinstate your probation under the same conditions; 2. Reinstate your probation but change (or “modify”) your conditions; 3. Terminate your probation and impose your original suspended sentence; or 4. Terminate your probation and impose the maximum sentence allowed by law. If your probation is reinstated, the judge may require you to serve up to a 1 year jail sentence as a condition of reinstatement.

E&B: Dude, you are always the bearer of bad news. Chris: Wouldn’t you rather read it here first, and know the consequences of what happens if you screw it up? Look, all probation is “an opportunity to NOT go to jail.” If you make it a priority, you will never go into custody. If you get lazy and start making excuses you’re booking a room at the Graybar Hotel. Every defendant DOES have a right to a VOP Hearing to put on evidence that they did NOT violate their probation, but the burden of proof for the Prosecutor is lower than for a new law conviction. And as always, if you have been arrested, or have received a notice of probation violation, contact an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to explain your options and best defense.

Vince Mendoza continued. wife whom he met while playing a gig in Lake Arrowhead. “We started a long distance relationship and from the beginning she was a good luck charm. I started getting gigs. When I would be gone for long periods of time she would be supportive, never jealous. I wasn’t looking for a relationship but she trusted me and pushed me. That drew me to her, and gave me confidence.” The other direct effect of the relationship is that they chose to make their home in Lake Elsinore in 1996, compromising her desire to not be in the city and Mendoza’s need to be near Orange and Los Angeles where his gigs were. At first, Mendoza traveled to his gigs, eventually tiring of his travels he took time off and started teaching guitar, something he still does locally. Somewhere during this time his daughter was born and his priorities changed drastically. Suddenly, long trips across the country or to foreign lands were not as attractive unless they paid a lot of money. He wanted to be with his family, so he started looking for more local work. He found it in the growing music scene in the Temecula Valley and surrounding area. Mendoza recalls, “In the early 2000s I noticed this area was starting to evolve and I started playing...a lot. It has steamrolled since then. One of the first gigs was at the Storm Stadium. Then I started playing with the Brewer Boys (local favorites) for five years. I used to teach them guitar.” Mendoza plays so much

he does not get out often to see other local talent, but recently he had a free weekend evening and he hit several venues and shows. His favorite of the night: Cougrzz Rock. “They are everything a band should be. Thick as thieves and loving the music.” There a twinge of jealousy in his voice and it is back to the love of playing with a “band of brothers.” But he recovers quickly, “I like the variety I have now.” He mostly plays solo now. “I do what I love. I make the guitar sing playing the songs I love.” He does some gigs playing guitar for local singers, “I want them to be great and have the interaction between them and me and my guitar.” He has no aspirations to hit the road unless his family can go with him as they did on a recent trip Alaska. Unless gigs can accommodate his family priorities he is happy stay close and play gigs, teach guitar and record local acts in his home studio. “Right now this is good enough, it is where my heart is.” Be sure to catch Vince Mendoza at one of his live dates this month: September 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, and 30 at Nonno’s Ristorante; September 11 at Miramonte Winery; and September 18 at Leonesse Cellars. Check out www.artistecard. com/vincemendoza for a complete listing of shows. To book Vince or inquire about lessons and recording studio services he can be reached at (951)775-8071.
