The Royal British Legion (TRBL) – Snape and Farnham Branch August Meeting Our shortened committee meeting confirmed various branch appointments and was followed by our AGM which included a review of the last 12 months’ activities, the presentation and adoption of the 2015/16 accounts and election of Branch Officers.

Sadly, our Treasurer has decided to step down and we need to find a new one. If anyone has a few hours to spare each month and is interested in joining us as Treasurer, please contact Dave Mincher on the details below.

SUFFOLK SINGERS CONCERT Suffolk Singers, directed by Claire Weston, are giving a concert for Suffolk Age UK on Saturday 1st October at Debenham Community Centre. Harrison Cole will accompany them in a varied programme of music, which includes Chilcott, Elgar, Grainger, Humperdink, Hutchings, Peterson-Berger, Rutter and Todd. SUFFOLK SINGERS CHORAL WORKSHOP Suffolk Singers will also be holding a Choral Workshop Famous Choruses, directed by Claire Weston at Framlingham College on 23 October from 09.30-17.00. There will be a FREE public performance at 16.30. Adult £20, under 19s FREE Price to include the loan of all music, expert professional tuition, tea and coffee throughout the day and cakes in the interval between the rehearsal and the performance.

At this year’s Workshop, Claire will lead us through some famous choruses. They will include: • Brahms “Requiem” - How lovely is thy dwelling place • Handel “Messiah” - Hallelujah chorus • Mendelssohn “Elijah” - Lift Thine Eyes • Bach “St Matthew Passion” - In tears of grief • Verdi “Requiem” - Dies Irae It will be helpful, but not essential, if participants have a little previous experience of singing with a choir or reading music, but if you’ve never tried anything like this before, come along and have a go. You will be given lots of support.

Benhall Harvest Supper and Festival This year’s Harvest Supper will be on Saturday 8th October in Benhall Club at 7 pm. There will be a delicious meal followed by wonderful entertainment and the evening will finish at approximately 9.30 pm. There will be more details in the October edition of Ebb and Flow. Snape Test Pit Digging 2016 Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA) delivered a two day archaeological test pitting event in Snape, over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May 2016. A total of 15 test pits were excavated by local residents, members of Aldeburgh Local History Society and volunteers from the local area throughout Snape over the two days, the majority of which also reached the natural sand.

The results from the test pitting yielded a mix of finds, with a small number of later prehistoric flints mainly recorded from the pits in the south and west along the river valleys. There was limited Roman activity identified, with only one test pit yielding Roman pottery that was again sited in the south of the village along the bank of the River Alde. No material of Anglo Saxon date was recovered despite the location of a number of test pits sited close to both where Anglo Saxon occupation and a cemetery have been identified.

Evidence for high medieval occupation was prevalent through the majority of the test pits in the village and the excavations also suggested new areas of previously unknown occupation for this time. Snape was affected by the Black Death and a decline in the amount of later medieval pottery was found through the excavations, after which the village still remained small until the 19th century and later with the arrival of industries and the railway drawing people to the area.

The community excavations were also successful in engaging nearly 50 local people more in the heritage and history of their local area. 140 vehicles exhibited at the Alde Valley Classics Day on Sunday 14th August at the Riverside Centre Stratford St Andrew. People attending enjoyed wonderful home-made and locally sourced food, were entertained by Honey and the Bear (Lucy Sampson and Jon Hart), danced along to classic tunes with the Jive Bunnies dance duo, browsed a variety of stalls and tried their hand at the coconut shy. £3,523 was raised for Benefice funds. Members of the seven churches of the Alde River Benefice and people throughout those communities all gave their time, skills and effort to ensure that the eighth Alde Valley Classics Day was a success. The event organisers would like to say a big thank you to them and to the Riverside Centre Committee for hosting the event. We look forwards to seeing everyone at the Ninth Alde Valley Classics Day in 2017. We can’t include everyone who helped make the event a successful one—but here are pictures of some stars of the show!

Benhall St Mary’s Primary School Summer Fete raised a fantastic £771.52

Time to say goodbye at Benhall School...

Benhall St Mary's has said goodbye and thank you to Chris Gallagher who has been Head for 10 years.

A special surprise assembly for him took place which rendered him speechless! A video of the whole school taking part in the well-known song, 'School's out for Summer' was shown and enjoyed.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED THE FETE

The school has flourished in his time and we are pleased that Katie Jenkins, our Deputy, has been appointed as Acting Head.

The new Autumn Term will bring challenges as we look to secure a future that best serves our children.

Congratulations to all those who won stall and raffle prizes.

The funds raised will go towards the outside play area and new field, and to continue to support extracurricular activities and resources.

Goodbye too, to our Year 6, all 13 of them. Many tears were shed as they read out a letter of their memories of school. Lots of photos of their 6 years at the school were shown and there were more tears. Photos include Leavers being presented with bibles, given by Benhall Education Foundation. Dylan received the Attendance Cup and Jack the Caring Cup. Mr G. Presented a cup for effort in maths. Maths is his specialism and this cup recognises those who have worked hard to achieve.

Benhall and Sternfield Memorial Show This year the Benhall and Sternfield Memorial Show committee have decided to alter how donations are organised so that the profits from the show can be directed to where they will be of most benefit.

Therefore the committee is asking organisations and groups in Benhall and Sternfield to submit requests for an amount to go towards a specific need or project. For example, in the past, the football club requested a donation towards their pavilion, the Pre-school was given a donation towards their new building and the Big Lunch organisers were given a donation towards the costs of their event.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk Little Glemham Church welcomes 3rd Chartwell Bay Sea Scout Group from Leigh on Sea The Scout troop, of about 35, were on summer camp between July 22nd and August 2nd and asked if they could have a service in the church. Nigella led a Family Service based around Jesus stilling the storm. Two children read the story and then a rap was performed by Nigella, Carolyn and two of the Scout leaders. This very much brought the story to life and was enjoyed by everyone. We then each made an Origami Boat which a prayer was written on. During prayer time the boats were added to the display showing calmness on the lake. 'Will your anchor hold' was sung as the final hymn and the Scouts processed out of church behind their colour party. A generous donation of £50 was given to the Church by their Commissioner.

Ministry Matters Much has been happening in the Benefice since the last edition of Ebb and Flow.

The Wedding season has been in full swing, there have been baptisms and unfortunately some funerals too. We have seen another successful “Messy Church” and uplifting services for Chalkwell Bay Sea Scouts and those attending Folk East.

In an effort to show the wider community what the Church is doing already, there have been stands prepared and manned at the Blaxhall Fete and the Classic Car event at the Riverside Centre. We have resources to provide indoor and outdoor displays and hope to expand this idea in the future.

It has been a pleasure to welcome visitors to our churches as they holiday in our region and to read the positive comments left in our visitor’s books. Already, thoughts are turning towards Harvest Festivals and even Christmas! There is always so much to celebrate.

Messy Church

Rainbow Choir: Evensong at Snape The fifth Sunday of the month, when it occurs, usually sees a service of sung Choral Evensong at Snape Church, beautifully led by Bill Gloyn’s Alde River Choir. However, as Bill was out of action on the fifth Sunday in July due to a cataract operation, The Rainbow Choir (singers from our benefice churches and a few faithful friends) stepped in to fill the breach.

It was the first time that several members of the choir had sung Evensong, but with enthusiasm and plenty of rehearsal they sang a range of music, from Taize to Liddle, Tonus Peregrinus to Rutter. The choir led a large congregation who were also in excellent voice, and together we raised the roof in worship.

Messy Church was held in Snape Village

Hall on Wednesday July 27th. Our Theme was 'Jesus, The Good Shepherd'. Over 70 worshippers of all ages enjoyed a morning of activities, story time, a short service and tasty lunch. Our activities included sheep buns, collage, sock puppets, sheep masks, play dough and various colourings of sheep and shepherds. Two new sheep puppets also made their first appearance.

Messy Church is now well established in our Benefice with a team of helpers. I would like to thank those of you who give their time to help with activities and provide the wonderful food for lunch.

It is always lovely to welcome new singers of all abilities.

We are particularly keen to swell our numbers as we begin to look forward to preparing our Christmas repertoire. I would also like to wish Bill a speedy recovery: we look forward to welcoming him back on the next fifth Sunday, if not before.

Blaxhall Fete 2016 Saturday 13th August was a pleasantly warm day for the annual Blaxhall Village Fete.

Proceedings started soon after noon with the early entries in the associated Dog Show. It’s not Crufts, but that does not hinder owners and their dogs from taking the event very seriously, competing in the many classes joyfully but seriously. The main event, the Fete, kicked off at 2.30pm and the array of stalls became quickly busy, whilst a throng explored the show tent to discover who had triumphed with entries in the produce classes. There were some marvellous examples of vegetables, fruit and flowers, with some new names on the leader board. In the warm weather the Village Hall provided a very welcome respite from the action on the field, and an opportunity to sample Sheila and the team’s awesome cakes. Outside, young and old continually rotated around the extensive side shows. The Rat got well-splatted, much crockery was smashed, coconuts wobbled and fell, and a 4-year old got within one rung of the whisky-winning adult position in the ‘ladder’ game. The long table which had been groaning with the weight of hundreds of bottles started to look sparse, the cakes sold out, options on the well-laden produce stall disappeared, books and ‘white elephants’ sold well, and then it was time for Miranda’s games and races. After a well-supported programme of races, it was time for the egg throwing.

Huge numbers entered both games. There was some spectacular throwing, catching – and missing. When the field was well-spattered with broken eggs, all that remained was to draw the raffle for the extensive list of valuable prizes. We went home exhausted and happy, conscious that many people’s efforts had made it all possible.

'Knodishall Then and Now' Friday 23rd September

Alde Valley Suffolk FAMILY HISTORY GROUP NEW VENUE FOR FAMILY HISTORY TALKS

Members of Knodishall Local History Group have been out and about in the village recently, photographing people and places as a record for the future. See how the village has changed over the years when some of these photos are included in our new presentation 'Knodishall Then and Now'.

Photos old and new will be brought to life with a live commentary by Tim Haxell.

Despite our previously advertised programme, the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will no longer be meeting at the Leiston Community Centre. Except in the winter, our monthly talks will now be held at the LEISTON UNITED CHURCH (URC/Methodist), High Street, Leiston, IP16 4EL at 7.30pm on the third Monday of the month. Entrance is not at the front of the church, but on the left hand side as you face the building. Parking is available in the Co-op/Solar car park which adjoins it, but vehicular access to the car park is via Urban Road (at the back of Solar).

During the interval there will be a chance to look through some of our still growing collection of photos and press cuttings. We are always keen to add more so please feel free to bring along anything that might be of interest.

We have also decided to hold our winter meetings in the afternoon rather than the evening, to avoid people having to drive in the dark. These meetings will be spread around the area to make it easier for those out of town to attend.

Mon 19 Sept Penal Transportation Pip Wright 7.30pm Leiston United Church Over a period of eighty years, over two thousand convicts were transported from Suffolk to Australia. Most never returned. This didn't only affect them, but also the families they left behind. Pip Wright's illustrated talk tells their stories and includes songs about transportation.

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP REPORT

Our menu for the September lunch on Tuesday 13th will be sausages with seasonal vegetables, which will be followed by ginger and syrup sponge with butterscotch sauce. As usual we like members to arrive at around 12.15pm for 12.30pm.

There was no Women’s Fellowship meeting in August. Our next meeting is at 7 30 pm on 6th September and will be a talk by one of our members, Angela Nichols, on her early nursing years. All welcome.

We are still looking for someone with cooking experience to join our friendly team to assist once a month. We are more than happy for interested people to come along and see one of the lunches. Please contact as below.

The Band of the Royal British Legion Leiston

What a fantastic day we had at the Snape Village Fun Day. I t w as a brilliant day weather wise with loads of things to see and do.

The village hall, bric a brac and book stall were all busy even before the gates were officially opened!

A special thank you to Ilse, Liz and Helen, for their expert sales: They took £127.15. We also made £66 from the concert tickets donated by Snape Maltings, so in total we raised £193.15!

Celia bought a raffle ticket for the concert but asked to ensure she didn't win. Well, guess what? Paul managed to pull out her ticket! We all laughed and she offered the tickets back and the next ticket out was Alison and David's. Well deserved, if we may say so!

The August Coffee Morning was quieter than usual and a few regular faces were missing.

However, the team managed to take over £140 which included a £20 donation. Thanks to all who helped out on the morning and to those who joined in the fun. You never know what sort of bargain you might find at the Snape village hall coffee morning so don't forget to pop along and join us on September 8th!

Band visit to Tipperary 2017 On 30th July 2017 the band will be travelling to Tipperary for their first ever visit to Ireland, where they will be hosted by the C. J. Kickham Brass & Reed Band from Tipperary Town. The purpose of the visit is to play various concerts throughout the week, finishing the concert programme there on the Friday evening with a Festival of Remembrance, and remembering the soldiers of Tipperary and the surrounding areas who gave their lives in the 1914/18 war. Tipperary lost over a thousand men in this conflict and even today Irishmen serve in English Regiments and lives are still being lost and we will remember these people as well.

It is hoped that on the Saturday morning of our visit we will parade with standards of the Royal British Legion and with the C. J. Kickham Band will march through the town of Tipperary to one of the local churches where a wreath laying ceremony and Service of Remembrance will be held. This will conclude the band's visit and they will return home to Suffolk on Sunday 6th August.

University of the Third Age Annual Open Day Friday 2nd September 10.30 - 12.30 Kesgrave Community Centre, Twelve Acres Approach, Bell Lane, Kesgrave, IP5 1JF.

Friday, September 30th in Great Glemham Village Hall, 10-30 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be all the usual stalls: Tombola, Cakes, White Elephant, Raffle and of course coffee, tea and delicious cakes. Donations for any of these stalls would be greatly appreciated and they may be left at Dumgoyne (opposite the hall) nearer the time.

Many of the Group Leaders will be available to give more information about their various subjects so if you fancy brushing up on a hobby, learning a new skill or enrolling in a book or poetry group this could be your chance. There are also lunch and general discussion groups and many others so come along and see what is on offer for a basic Membership fee of just £12.50 per year. Open House at the Long Shop Museum!

The Long Shop Museum is delighted to announce that it is once again taking part in the UK’s biggest annual Heritage Festival when it opens its doors for FREE on Saturday 10th September as part of Heritage Open Days.

Great Movies in Glemham The new season of films at the Great Glemham Village Hall starts on Friday 2nd September with the acclaimed British film from 2015

The museum is housed in some of the Victorian former factory buildings of the former Garrett Agricultural Engineering Works, including the Long Shop itself, built in 1852-3. The Long Shop was one of the world’s first ever assembly lines and was a hub of industry and innovation in an otherwise rural setting.

This engaging film, scripted by the incomparable Alan Bennett, tells the true story of his strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman, who for fifteen years lived in a Bedford van parked in his Camden driveway.

We will be celebrating local heritage and providing East Anglian communities with a fantastic opportunity to engage, at no cost, with the wealth of hidden histories on their doorstep. The museum will be open from 10am to 4pm with guided tours at intervals led by our team of experts. Learn about the pioneering achievements of the Garrett family, see Suffolk’s deepest well, dress up in Victorian clothing and soak up the sun (or eat a picnic lunch) in our gorgeous garden.

As usual the doors will open at 7.15 and the programme will start at 7.45.

The next film, Oscar winning The Lives of Others will be on 14th October:at the same time.

This community cinema is open to all readers of Ebb & Flow. There is no charge but donations to help with costs are welcomed.

Wine, soft drinks and nibbles are always available.

Home-made cakes will be available to buy in our vintage pop up tea room, and there will also be a range of children's activities (for a small fee) such as making your own Victorian toy, and handling some Victorian objects from our collections.

Take on a once in a lifetime challenge for your local hospice

LEISTON 1966 – 50 YEARS ON

Take on the challenge of a lifetime and cycle from London to Paris in 2017 to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. The local charity is looking for 60 supporters to take on the 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris between 19 – 24 September 2017 and have already filled a number of the spaces.

Those participants who sign up now still have over a year to train and to fundraise, so we are eager to get as many people signed up as soon as possible. It will also mean more time for the group to get to know one another, allowing them to bond and work together ahead of the event.

People of all cycling abilities and experiences can take part and everyone who signs up will be supported with their training and fundraising from now until they return from Paris. All the money raised from this experience will go towards providing care and support to patients and their families wherever it is need, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice. A series of photographs taken by Libby Hall in 1966 are coming to Leiston. The photographer will be present at an open evening on Monday 5th September along with photographer Eamonn McCabe who will be joining us for a Q&A. Libby Hall worked at Summerhill School in the mid 1960s and was a regular patron in The Engineers’ Arms where these pictures were taken, directly across the road from Garretts Engineering Works.

Many of the subjects in these photographs are known and remembered as friends and ancestors to the people of Leiston. They capture a moment in time which is specific, immediate and meaningful in terms of time and place.

These photographs also show us a slice of life just before the economy of Suffolk and of the country as a whole was about to change. 1966 was a seminal year for the town. Two miles up the road Sizewell A nuclear power station began generating electricity and was set to become Leiston’s biggest employer, taking over from Garrett’s which closed in 1980.

All are welcome at the Exhibition Open Evening which runs from 4.30 to 6.30 on Monday 5th September. We would be delighted to see anyone who featured in, or knows others who were captured in Libby’s original photographs, along with anyone who remembers drinking in the Engineers in the 1960s.

Leiston, Saxmundham and Aldeburgh Community Car Service Volunteer Drivers Required We are urgently seeking new volunteers to assist our community car services in the Saxmundham area using their own cars.

Community Car services offer transport to anyone who does not have access to public transport or a private car. The service helps passengers to attend medical appointments, hairdressers, local shops or visit family/ friends.

These services offer a valuable lifeline to our passengers who are rurally isolated or who need door to door transport.

Drivers will be DBS checked and trained by CATS; drivers can offer as much or as little time as they like. If you feel that you could spare a few hours per week, would like to help people within your community and have a car please contact us on 01728 830516.

Drivers will be reimbursed for all mileage at 45p per mile.
