Approximately 60 people from the village and beyond gathered in Blaxhall Village Hall on Saturday 3rd December to celebrate, in an extravaganza of musical items, Robin Graham having reached the extraordinary age of 90 just the week before. The ‘community singing’ of a diverse range of songs and Christmas carols was led by Geraldine Taylor on the keyboard and strengthened by the singing of ‘5 in a Bar’ in the audience. The young people from the area performed, with costumes and props, a very energetic rendering of ‘Dingle Dangle Scarecrow’. Then it was more community singing before ‘5 in a Bar’ took the stage to perform their programme, which finished with a specially commissioned (from Miranda Barclay) ‘Robin Graham’s Song’, and the audience lustily joined in. John Kerr then recounted anecdotes from the long period in which he has known Robin and his family, which emphasised the interesting and diverse life which Robin has led, and the strong affection in which Robin is held by many people.

Robin gave a short speech, thanking all for their good wishes and those who had contributed to the day’s festivities. Then, after the blowing out of the candles on the large chocolate birthday cake, and a loud rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’, it was time for a splendid Blaxhall Tea. The day was an extremely joyous occasion in the life of the Village.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk Swifts Please will you be willing to help swifts find a home? Swifts are one of our later Summer visitors to arrive back to our shores each Spring. They are one of the fastest flying birds in the world and also one that hardly ever comes to land. If they did not have to rear young from eggs they would have no need at all to come to 'ground' as they eat flying insects on the wing.

Swifts nest in buildings, in small holes, eaves and gables. They have been doing this for over 2000 years. Unfortunately, new buildings and repairs to older properties are preventing Swifts from getting access to their preferred nest sites and the species is declining. So the RSPB Woodbridge Local Group are promoting Swift nest boxes to be erected where the Swifts have lost their traditional sites. It would be a dreadful shame if in the future we would no longer be able to see their incredible acrobatic flight or hear the 'screaming' parties racing through our towns and villages.

The Local Group have been recording sightings and nest sites of Swifts in Woodbridge and nearby villages. We would now like to extend our records further afield and include Saxmundham, Benhall, Snape, Sternfield, Farnham, Stratford St. Andrew, Little Glemham and Great Glemham. The Rainbow Choir: Retrospective and Forthcoming 2016 has been a busy and exciting year for the Benefice Rainbow Choir. The choir, made up of enthusiastic singers from our local parishes, has continued to grow in number and confidence, and our singers have responded eagerly to the demands placed upon them in 2016.

The choir has taken an active role in the music of our Benefice services this year, leading congregational singing, as well as providing music for reflection both before services and during communion and intercessions. This has given us the opportunity to expand our repertoire, and we have enjoyed learning and performing some more recently written church music. This year has also seen the Rainbow Choir engage with more traditional styles of church music, leading Choral Evensong at Snape during the summer, and offering a service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Benhall in the build up to Christmas. It has been a joy to sing such a range of music and participate in such varied worship.

As we move in to 2017 the Rainbow Choir is working hard to prepare music for a Taizé service which will take place during Lent.

The Choir is also looking forward to continuing to help lead worship at our Benefice services.

SNAPE SCHOOL NEWS It has been a very busy

Life on Snape Marshes The reserve was grazed for a full summer season and then mown by tractor to reduce the amount of thick and rank vegetation. Now that the marsh has been “put to bed” for winter, we’re going to make quite an exciting addition to the habitat. Before the end of February, we will be putting in a scrape – a fairly shallow area of water of varying depth and varying bank profile. This area of water is aimed at attracting wintering birds, mainly teal and wigeon, and will also be useful for waders such as redshank. In addition, some foot drains will be reinstated, mainly for snipe, which overwinter on the reserve. Also, the sluice under the river wall into the Alde will be replaced, as it’s well past its sell-by date and isn’t working as it should.

December for us all at Snape. We had some very helpful ‘elves’ who decorated and made things look very sparkly and shiny. They also decorated our little tree too. The PSA hosted their annual wreath making night with the ever wonderful Teresa from the Crown who always makes it look so easy.

The hall was packed with greenery, baubles and concentration and everybody went home with beautiful wreaths.

We performed our Christmas production ‘Lights Camel Action’ at Abbey Farm Barn thanks to Miranda Barclay who very generously offered to host us all again this year. The play was based around ‘Strictly’ and we had some wonderful dance routines judged by some friendly and some not so friendly judges with their score paddles in action throughout the performance. The children were fantastic and so were our audience including Sunflower Montessori Nursery from Middleton. When they visited to see the school children perform we had a very special visitor to see them afterwards.

We had to listen very carefully to see if we could hear reindeer hooves on the roof.

We will come back to a new year with some new teachers to add to our Snape team- Mr. Ian Fisher and Mrs. Charlotte Pratt have joined us and will be teaching Years 3, 4 5 and 6.

We welcome them heartily and look forward to exciting learning and a fun filled, action packed 2017!

Hopefully the better control of wetness enabled by the new sluice will benefit the flora too. We’re looking forward to see whether the yellow rattle, brought in via seeds in green hay from the beautiful Darsham Marshes SWT reserve, will get properly established. Once it gets a foothold it spreads rapidly by windblown seed and as it is parasitic on the roots of rank grasses, it should give more delicate and interesting plants a chance to thrive. This should give the marsh a more colourful and diverse appearance.

Christingle Service at Great Glemham

The barn owls are still thriving and patrolling the reserve in late afternoon. They raised two young last summer, which will have moved elsewhere to establish their own territories. Recently, the Trust’s Sam Hanks had an interesting experience while carrying out work on the marsh. A barn owl dropped half of a water vole next to him while he was having his lunch! First-hand evidence that water voles continue to thrive in the absence of mink, but we’d rather the barn owls stuck to their chief prey item of short-tailed voles! Another interesting wildlife sighting recently has been the slots (footprints) of red deer along the Carnser.

They tend mainly to hang around New England Farm, but have been seen on the reserve occasionally in the past.

On Sunday 11th December children and parents attended a Christingle Service at All Saints Church, organised by Carolyn and Patricia. There was great excitement as they collected their individual Christingle oranges and learned about the significance of the component parts. They also asked some challenging questions so Carolyn had to do some quick thinking!

Patricia organised refreshments after the service and the children took the opportunity to decorate the Christmas tree.

It really was lovely to see so many children in church – a big thank you to Carolyn and Patricia. Donations will go to the Children’s Society. The next Family Service at Great Glemham will be on 8th January when the Visit of the Kings will be celebrated.

So far this autumn/winter we haven’t seen any short-eared owls or hen harriers on the marsh. We usually get the odd sighting, so please let us know if you see any. Pub names with a difference On 16 January the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will welcome back Geoff White to tell us about some pub names with a difference. Travelling around Kent and East Sussex in the course of his work with British Gas, Geoff was able to photograph many pub signs, and although there has been a decline in pictorial pub signs lately, an exception is The White Horse at Sweffling, where a new sign was unveiled in December 2015, together with a decorative ale garland. Geoff will be speaking mostly about unusual names, but with some interesting stories to accompany the illustrations. The meeting will be held at Snape Village Hall at 2.30pm on Monday 16 January, when visitors will be very welcome. Admission: members £1, visitors £3, including tea/coffee and biscuits.

Farnham with Stratford St Andrew Parish Council is very keen to hear your views about EDF's proposals for the A12 which form part of the Stage 2 public consultation on Sizewell C. All households in Farnham and Stratford St Andrew should have received a questionnaire from the parish council asking for your views.

Family History Research Centre

Snape Village Hall It was great to see lots of our new residents at the December coffee morning as well as our regular supporters. It was a very busy morning. Thank you all for supporting the village hall: it is much appreciated and without you we would not be able to maintain the standard at the hall. Thank you also for all the fantastic raffle prizes you continue to donate, as well as the bric-abrac, for which we are always grateful. We ran an additional raffle for Christmas thanks to Gotelee Solicitors, who generously donated a £50 meat voucher for Friday St Farm Shop. Sharon Varley was the lucky winner.

We were also joined by some of the children from Snape school who came to sing to us, which was excellent and really got us into the Christmas spirit. A fantastic morning which raised a staggering £292! We look forward to seeing you all on 12th January to celebrate the new year.

Just a reminder that the post office is now running on a Monday and Friday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Margaret will be pleased to serve you, so please call in to see her and help maintain the service in the village.

The Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group’s Research Centre will now be open free of charge on Saturday mornings as well as on Wednesdays, for a trial period. We hold local information such as graveyard catalogues for Benhall, Saxmundham, Leiston, Eastbridge, Aldringham and Sutton, censuses, directories, information on local war memorials, books, and historic maps. We have recently acquired a large number of CDs and microfiches of local interest. The research centre has computers with Internet, printer, and a scanner. There is also WiFi Internet access if you wish to bring your own laptop or tablet. Experienced family history researchers will be present to give assistance if required.

The Research Centre is upstairs in the old Council Offices in Main Street, Leiston, IP16 4ER, in the same building as and to the right of the Library, opposite the Long Shop Museum. Access is by a steep staircase. You can park outside free of charge for one hour, or use the “unlimited” free car park in Valley Road – go straight on past Barclay’s Bank and it’s on the right.

Once again the great season of Christmas is over and we face another year. What will it hold for us?

Without doubt there will be wars, there will be refugees, there will be Brexit and there will be Donald Trump. For each of us individually there will be highs and lows, problems to be faced, difficulties to be overcome, sorrows and sadness to be borne. How shall we cope? Shall we turn to prayer? After The Lord’s Prayer I suppose the most common prayer is ‘O God help me.’ It is amazing how prayer can help if we give it a little more time and thought; the very fact that we pause and think a prayer can calm and steady us. The great actress Dame Sybil Thorndike at times of stress would say ‘I need the hand of the Lord on my shoulder this day or night’ whatever time it was. This statement is a little longer than ‘O God help me’ and so it gives a little more time for the calmness which we all need from time to time to set in.

Perhaps we could try and remember the words Minnie Louise Haskins wrote that were spoken so memorably

by King George VI when our country faced grave danger: ‘I said to the man that stood at the gate of the year give me a light that I might tread safely. He said to me “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That will be better for you than light and safer than a known way.” ’ I do respectfully suggest that you try it and I hope it will be of help to you whatever the year may hold, which I sincerely hope will be a happy one.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk British Legion (TRBL) – Snape and Farnham Branch We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year There was no meeting in December as we held our annual Carols and Lessons at St Andrew’s Church followed by supper at Glemham Hall. The Church had been decorated beautifully. The service was well attended, led by the Rev’d Robin Alderson, our wonderful organist and readings by Branch members. We would like to thank the following for their assistance:- Major Philip Hope-Cobbold and team for hosting and providing the supper at Glemham Hall , Mr and Mrs Edwards for collecting and arranging the raffle, Mr Nick Raison for the musical accompaniment. The January film in the Great Glemham Village Hall will be on Friday 13th January. It will be Fargo (18). This darkly humorous, Coen Brothers crime story is set in the bleak, snow-covered landscape of Minnesota. Jerry Lundegard is in financial difficulties and comes up with a plan to get the money he needs, but it all goes badly wrong. The very pregnant Chief of Police, Marge Gunderson, calmly and tenaciously investigates the bizarre case, involving several brutal murders. The film won two Oscars and was nominated for five others plus numerous other awards. In 2006 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as a "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" film. Please note that it is certificate '18'. As usual the doors will open at 7.15 and the programme will start at 7.45. This community cinema is open to all readers of Ebb and Flow. There is no charge but donations to help with costs are welcomed. Wine, soft drinks and nibbles are always available.

Women’s Fellowship Report On Tuesday 6th December the Women’s Fellowship held their Christmas Party. Twenty-one ladies sat down at beautifully decorated tables to a delicious meal prepared by the committee There was also a Christmas quiz and a wonderful draw to raise more funds for our Charity. The event finished with communal singing of three lovely carols. The next Fellowship will be on Tuesday 7th February when the cheque for our 2016 Charity will be handed to a representative for Woolverstone Wish, Ipswich Hospital who will talk about the work they do. Don’t forget to bring your subscription for the year of £10!

www.ebbnflow.org.uk The Alde Valley Spring Festival 2016 The 2016 Spring Festival, Summer Exhibition and !Cornucopia! presented works by over 40 local, regional and international artists, writers and makers. The Spring Festival Launch Lunch raised over ÂŁ1,500 for Great Glemham Parish Church Fabric Fund, Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the Country Trust.

The Summer Exhibition presented a curated Solo Show of sculpture by Sarah Pirkis whilst !Cornucopia! featured solo shows by Roger Hardy, Tessa Newcomb, Alice-Andrea Ewing, Freddy Morris and Kabir Hussain, alongside works from the Suffolk Chair Collection and new chairs by Jim Parsons, Dan Hussey, Raymond Hopkins and Dylan Pym. Autumn Open Studio Residencies focused on Heritage Skills, with works by Sarah Butters [feltmaker], Ian Sedge [signwriting], Nienke Jongsma [Studio Vandertas / bag maker], Sharon McMullin [stained glass], Jon Warnes [spoon making], Tobias Ford [knifemaker], Tessa Newcomb [Hedge Hut residency], Lily Hunter Green [Bee Composed No 4 Sound Residency] and Synnove Fredericks [Wildwood Residency]. We welcomed honey producers from Leiston Beekeeping Association and toasted their health at a Farm Supper in October called The Feast of St Gobnait - the Irish patroness of bees and beekeepers.

Another new project for 2016 was the formal representation of work by selected artists. The Spring Festival is working as agent for Roger Hardy [painting and sculpture], Craig Hudson [sculpture) and for The Great Glemham Series of bronzes by Alice -Andrea Ewing and the Tangle and Variations series by Freddy Morris. From the New Year we will be representing Tobias Ford's beautiful handmade knives. We are also working with Tessa Newcomb on a new book about White House Farm, to follow on from An Artist in the Garden ,published by Full Circle Editions in 2012.

The new Writing at Great Glemham project was launched in April

2016 with guest writers Hugh Thomson, Richard Mabey, Edward Posnett and Paddy Bushe. Residency links are being explored with Cill Rialig in Kerry and a sister festival in Sarawak Pesta Nukenen dan Kebudayaan Kelabit continues to go from strength to strength. Another residency project is being explored in the Howgill Fells of Cumbria, due to be launched in November 2017. I was very touched by the letter from Sue’s daughter in the December Ebb & Flow . It was such a sad day to see the shop close. Great Glemham Village Hall December was a busy month at the Village Hall. In addition to Yoga and Pilates classes, Table Tennis and Scottish Country Dancing, on Friday 2nd the hall hosted a fundraising quiz with Village Hall chairman Duncan McIver as Question Master.

Answers to the varied and sometimes rather cryptic questions ranged from 'White Fang' to 'Bedlington Terrier' - no extra marks if you can spot the connection here! A delicious meal of shepherd's pie and beans followed by apple crumble and ice cream was served at half time and the winners went home with an appropriate Smarties prize.

The next week saw the traditional Christmas Coffee morning, with the busy Hall Chairman cooking mince pies. There were several craft stalls offering Christmas related goodies and somehow Santa also found time to drop in during the morning.

The Village Hall committee thanks everyone who helped at or attended either of these events. The Great Glemham hall is maintained for the benefit of everyone and it is gratifying when the community comes together to show its support. The two December events together raised a total of just under ÂŁ850 all funds which help with upkeep and also help to maintain hire charges at the lowest possible rates.
