At the final Walled Garden Teas on Sunday 4th September, members of Benhall church said a big ‘ThankYou’ to Marion and Jim Mountain for hosting the event over the past 9 years. Marion and Jim were presented with a bottle of champagne and tickets to the Benhall Harvest Supper. The Teas have been a popular event, raising much needed funds to improve the church facilities.

Bury Bach Choir concert for Remembrance weekend Saturday 12th November 7.30pm at the Apex, Bury St Edmunds

Art at the Chapel Three local artists exhibited pictures at the Baptist Chapel in Aldeburgh at the end of August. It was a good venue, with a bright space, and was in the High Street close to other galleries where discerning art-lovers hang out. There were about 80 paintings and they looked really good on display. The venue is used by other artists and groups particularly over the summer.

The press was invited along to take pictures, which appeared in one of the supplements. There was also a private view which was a nice, convivial occasion to which our families and friends came.

Most of the works on display were landscapes, but each artist had their own distinctive style. Clara's paintings made a bold impression along one wall, especially her woodland scenes, which conveyed her sensitivity and love of nature. Heather's paintings included some iconic East Anglian views, such as Blythburgh, as well as birds and flowers. Stephen's were a mixture of local scenes and more rugged places further afield.

Many people came to see the exhibition and made favourable comments, and a few stopped to chat.

The main work will be Mozart’s Requiem. Mystery and intrigue surround this piece, commissioned by an unknown aristocrat and unfinished by Mozart who died before its completion. His wife, keen to obtain the final payment, secretly invited Mozart’s pupil Süssmayr to finish the work for the aristocrat, who then passed it off as his own lament for his late departed wife.

It was disappointing that not many pictures were sold, but then people did not come specifically looking to buy pictures. Those who did buy, bought pictures specifically of Aldeburgh, rather than all the nice surrounding places, the muddy rivers and reed beds that make East Anglia so special. Quite a few of the visitors were themselves artists, and expressed more informed appreciation of our work.

Different people liked different things, so all the pictures were appreciated, and many people got to see our work.

BENHALL CHURCH BAZAAR - BENHALL CLUB SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER Benhall Church Bazaar will take place at Benhall Club on Saturday 19th November from 11 am until 1.30 pm. There will be a Grand Draw for the Christmas Hamper and many other prizes. Other stalls include: cake/produce, bric-a-brac, Christmas decorations, knitted goods, gift stall, bottle stall. Lunches will be served from 11.45. Also there will be our 2 nd ANNUAL GREAT BENHALL BAKE OFF. Further details about this in November’s EBB AND FLOW. Snape Choral Evensong – 30th October at 6.30pm Although the pattern of services for the Benefice has changed, one thing is constant – the Choral Evensong in Snape when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.

The next Evensong at St John the Baptist will be performed by the Alde River Singers, led by Bill Gloyn. It will celebrate All Saints, and will include some of the wonderful music that has been written to remember all those saints of old, and today: You may recall that Mother Teresa joined the official ranks of those recognised as saints in September.

A centre-piece will be the hymn “For all the saints who from their labours rest”. The music for that was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams and first published 100 years ago. There will be a variety of stirring hymns for all to sing and pay tribute to both those saints who are officially recognised and those known just to the few who love them still.

Messy Church The next Messy Church will be held at Snape Village Hall on Wednesday 28th October from 11am-1pm. Doors open from 10:30 for drinks and biscuits. The theme for October Messy Church will be a Celebration of Light, with craft activities and a short service with storytelling and music, followed by a free lunch.

Our organist this time will be Jane van Tilborg. Jane often plays at Snape, having returned to the UK following her time as cathedral organist in Nelson, New Zealand. She is in great demand as an accompanist, both locally, nationally and abroad. Her professional career was spent in the motor lubricant industry where, as a highly qualified chemist, she spent time in the US in her role in project managing research and product development.

All Saints Church Great Glemham Patronal Service 30th October at 10.00am.

All Saints Day is an opportunity for believers to remember all saints and martyrs, known and unknown, throughout Christian history. Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to them each year has been a Christian tradition since the 4th century AD, but it wasn't until 609AD that Pope Boniface IV decided to remember all martyrs. Originally 13th May was designated as the Feast of All Holy Martyrs. Later, in 837AD, Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to remember all the saints, changed its name to Feast of All Saints and changed the date to 1st November. Come along to All Saints Church, Great Glemham and join us for this special service.

Benhall Harvest Supper and Festival This year’s Harvest Supper will be on Saturday 8th October in Benhall Club at 7 pm. There will be a delicious meal followed by wonderful entertainment and the evening will finish at approximately 9.30 pm. There will be more details in the October edition of Ebb and Flow.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk Snape School News We have started back to school making the most of our beautiful weather and all the opportunities a new school year brings. We have welcomed our lovely lot of new Reception children: what a smiley bunch they are. On page 10 there are some pictures of them very busy making an apple crumble in the first week and constructing and riding around the playground with enviable energy.

Our Kestrel class of KS2 are continuing to music make in style.

They have been rehearsing 'Paramore' with the Red House as part of the High Tide Festival and have taken up instrument learning again. I think you'll see what some of them have been learning from the pictures. We've been exploring and learning outside and in, and have lots of new resources to inspire us into an action packed term. We love having visitors, so if you'd like to come in and join us on our learning adventure, please do. We like reading to as many grown-ups as we can. We like finding out about people's jobs and their own adventures and we like learning new skills. So if you think you might be able to help please call in to the school office.

Snape and Farnham Branch September Meeting: Agenda items were covered, including Branch finances, our work in the community and welfare, with special mention of the following: Fish & Chips Supper: We had a successful evening at the Riverside Centre, Stratford St Andrew. Funds raised for the Poppy Appeal are still being counted at the time of going to press. Our thanks to the team at the Riverside Centre, Stephen Bayfield and the Broadside Boys and everyone who donated raffle prizes.

We continue our search to find a new Treasurer. If anyone has a few hours to spare each month (computer skills are not required) and is interested in joining us, please contact the Branch Chairman – details below.

Events coming up include: a short remembrance service on 11th November to be held on the Green in the middle of Snape and a Remembrance Service on 13th November at Snape Church.

A CELEBRATION OF COLOUR Cheer up the darker days of November and visit our exhibition in Framlingham. Learn more about the fascinating craft of felting, weaving and rag rugging. On display will be one-off designs of wearable felt art, hand felted cushions and rugs and throws made from Wensleydale fleece. Also on display will be work by the Ragtime Ruggers which will include cushions, bags and rugs. Many items will be for sale together with hand carded batts and hand-dyed Wensleydale locks for felting, spinning or weaving.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk BLAXHALL FUN DOG SHOW The weather was sunny and warm with the odd cloud, so the dogs did not cook, and a nice gentle breeze made things pleasant. We had a good turnout and made £322 to share between our Village hall and Suffolk Animal Rescue. Everyone was really happy and chatty, with all age ranges of folk mixing easily, strangers and locals alike. Some people were on holiday from Hatfield and I know one family that travelled from Colchester especially for us.

We had an abundance of prizes and rosettes for winners of our classes, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. The prizes were hand sewn (by me) fabric drawstring kit bags, full of useful bits, like lint roller, aloe Vera samples for dogs, balls and tuggies, food, lead, key rings, anti-bacterial gel, doggie flannel, sweeties for humans, etc. plus a goodie box from Brigadier's Choice.

Amongst the toys, treats and food was a £5 voucher. Acorn Dog Training Club from Tunstall provided an action packed demonstration from advanced heelwork and tricks to a small obstacle race. WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP REPORT At our meeting on Tuesday 6th September we welcomed Shelley Nott who worked as a freelance designer and photographer for many years before joining a firm who design insignia for foreign heads of state. The UK and France are the only two countries in the world who do this type of design.

Many of her designs are for African or Asian countries where there are always new people coming to power, and each new head of state wants to reward the people who have supported them. Shelley has to research each country so that her designs reflect the style of the country and use any special metals, jewels etc. which are prevalent there.

Shelley had brought along her computer to show us some of her designs which were very intricate and colourful. Shelley has also designed jewellery for well-known celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor. At the end of her talk, which gave a fascinating insight into the life of a designer, she answered questions from the ladies present about her work.

A reminder that there will be a list next month for those wishing to attend the Christmas party and pay the £6 for the meal.

Also next month is the LARGE BRING AND BUY SALE so please support this in aid of our charity for this year. October’s talk by Angela Nichols will be about her early nursing life.

Even though thousands attended Art on the Prom in Felixstowe, Art in the Church at Great Glemham, held over the weekend of September 3rd - 4th, was still a success.

The fine weather brought many visitors to view the artwork on display.

Ministry Matters A big “thank you” to our Churchwardens (and representatives) who with their P.C.C. members are working with the Ministry Team to ensure that pastoral care and occasional offices (church speak for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals) continue to be conducted carefully and compassionately.

Thanks also for their help regarding Harvest Festivals and Christmas services, where inevitably some compromises have had to be made.

If your favourite service is not happening in your church it will be taking place somewhere in the Benefice.

Details of service times and venues do appear in Ebb and Flow every month on a handy insert which you can pin up in a prominent place.

The current rota of services has been in place for some months now and feedback from Benefice services is very positive. If you have not yet joined us for one of these services, please do “give it a try”. You will receive a warm welcome.

As soon as there are any developments regarding the appointment of a new Rector they will appear in Ebb and Flow.

At present, Churchwardens and church councils are engaged in trying to formulate a Benefice plan for the future which will show our commitment to working together and meeting our financial responsibilities to the Diocese.

It seems that some people must have overlooked the summary of results of the questionnaire which was included in the Ebb and Flow earlier this year.

The most common responses were: That the Benefice should do more together Some less formal services Expand our work with children More services, celebrations, group meetings outside the church buildings These have all been noted and the first three are already happening.

No 4 is, as they say ,“work in progress”.

Following the success of the Palm Sunday service on Benhall Green and the service of Wholeness and Healing outdoors at the Riverside Centre, there will no doubt be opportunities for outdoor activities and for the formation of house groups.

In 1777, Matthias Claudius had become ill and returned to Christianity after leaving it in his 20s. During his illness he wrote a number of poems. In 1782, a friend invited him over for dinner and asked him to bring one of the Christian poems he had written. Claudius wrote "We Plough The Fields And Scatter" based on Psalm 144 for this occasion, with 17 verses. It was published across Germany in a number of hymn books, was reduced from 17 verses and started with the 3rd verse "Wir pflügen und wir streuen". In 1862 Jane Montgomery Campbell translated "Wir pflügen und wir streuen" into English as "We Plough the Fields and Scatter". She did not make a strict translation from the original German but ensured retention of the hymn's original focus of giving thanks to God for the harvest. In 1969 the hymn was parodied by John Betjeman as "We spray the fields and scatter/the poison on the land" and published in Harvest Times as a protest against modern farming methods and new planning legislation.

The hymn references Acts 14:17 (verse 1), James 1:17 (chorus), Psalms 65:7 and Matthew 6:26 (verse 2, line 3).

Bee in Snape Woodland's Pollinators Project!

If you have a little spare time and would like to help improve your local environment why not join Snape Woodland Group as a volunteer? We meet occasionally and would like some help to develop our new publicly accessible woodland which has evolved from a barren field of mud to a lovely flourishing young woodland that attracts a wide range of wild flowers, birds and animals. We would like to develop the site further, reinstate the pond that dried up, and make the site even more attractive to wildlife.

Last year we planted a number of fruiting trees as part of Suffolk Coast & Heaths ‘Scattered Orchards’ project and have now joined their ‘Pollinator Patches’ project which aims to grow nectar rich plants in selected sites to help support our declining bee and pollinator population. We will be supported by trained volunteers who will help survey our site to determine the best pollinator plants to use and where to put them, after which they will provide the selected seeds, plugs bulbs or trees for us to plant.

If you would be interested in helping us with Pollinator Patches, or perhaps through occasional site maintenance such as trimming grass and hedges, planting trees, identifying wild flowers or perhaps raising some funds please contact either Neil Parsons neil.parsons@outlook.com or Brian Boulton brian.boulton@btinternet.com. Nearly thirty people gathered in Great Glemham Village Hall to watch The Lady in the Van in early September. In turns sad, very funny and even downright ridiculous, this film was a great hit with the audience. The next film night at the hall will be on Friday 14th October when the Oscar winning German film

The Lives of Others (15) will be shown.

Set in Cold War East Berlin in 1984, it is the moving story of a Stasi officer conducting surveillance on a writer and his partner. Over time, he finds detachment impossible and becomes increasingly absorbed by, and eventually implicated in, their private lives.

This excellent and moving film won the Best Foreign Language Oscar and was nominated for and won many other awards. Don't let the subtitles put you off!

As usual the doors will open at 7.15 and the programme will start at 7.45.

The Children’s Society Coffee Morning We’re having our Christmas coffee morning at The Market Hall, Saxmundham, on Saturday 19th November from 10.00am12.30pm. Suffolk’s Seraphim Christmas Celebration The singers of the popular female group, Seraphim, well-known for their “beautiful sounds” performances (medieval, baroque and classical music in beautiful spaces), are exploring new music in their new concert season.

Seraphim's Christmas celebration is on Sunday 4th December at Orwell Park School, near Ipswich. The group has been presented with the huge honour and challenge of the first performance of a work written specially for them by Suffolkbased pianist and composer, Jonathan Rutherford, who will also be playing in the concert. Acknowledging that this date will be the 40th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death, Seraphim will include his well-loved Ceremony of Carols in their programme.

There was a whole range of displays in the centre ring, stalls, raffles table tops/ car boot, games for all the family and the usual truly great barbeque, a bar and the church afternoon tea tent. There were lots of entries for the various dog show classes and Snape local Kathy Hough won best in show with Daisy .

MCs (Paul and Kay) did a fabulous job throughout the day, which started with the opening of the new tennis court by Suffolk Coastal District Council cabinet member TJ Howarth Culf. During the afternoon the internationally acclaimed Spectrum Kite Display Team put on a number of stunning shows. The Ipswich Hospital Band (St Peter’s Band) played in the central ring between the kite displays and also put in some stunning performances.

www.ebbnflow.org.uk Social Dancing Why not come and try our social dance club On Y Va which restarts on Tuesday 27th September. We teach dances from Brittany and Central France and you don't need a partner.

Dance to live music on traditional instruments or if you are a musician come along and join in with the musicians. We have a music practice from 7.30 to 8.15 and dance workshop from 8.30 for an hour, then a dance until 10.30 pm. No experience required for the dancers, we will teach you a different dance each week so that you can build up your repertoire.

Cost: £4 per session, no commitment to come every month.

Point Devis Point Devis also restarts in September on Thursday 15th September at 8.15 pm, we perform dances from the North West of England, mainly garland and clog dances. No experience necessary we will teach you the steps and the dances over the winter months ready to perform in the summer at fetes, festivals (and charity events. If you are a musician and would like to join our band our practice starts at 7.30 pm.

Good Meat Matters with Gerard King Local muntjac vindaloo My Mumbai-an friend Rawat is head chef at the Sea Spice Indian restaurant that has recently opened in Aldeburgh. Rawat has come up with a new ‘special’ for Autumn that I’m very excited about East Suffolk Muntjac Vindaloo. This curry (is one of my favourites – provided it’s not too hot – and I love the idea of pairing it with something as seasonal and local as muntjac. It seems like an inspired meeting of cultures. I asked Rawat to give me the recipe and he very kindly obliged. However, he was wonderfully blasé about quantities so I’ve had to do some research to pin down the amounts needed. Unlike me, when it comes to curry cooking, he does it by instinct. I notice that there are huge variations in ingredients for vindaloo, so don’t worry if you can’t get all of these spices exactly just add what you can.

Rawat’s Muntjac Vindaloo (serves 6) 1.3 kilo diced muntjac (or venison) 125 ml sunflower oil 4 chopped onions 6 garlic cloves, chopped 1-2 whole red chillies 1-2 star anise (optional) 5 cardamom pods 2 teaspoons green peppercorns Long thumb fresh ginger, peels and chopped 3 tbsp tamarind paste (optional) 100ml red wine vinegar salt 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ground smoked paprika 2 tbsp garam masala paste 2 tbsp tomato puree Pre-heat oven 180C. Marinade venison in vinegar, 2 tbsp oil and generous sprinkling of salt for at least two hours.

Gently brown chopped onions in 2 tbsp of oil.

Put remaining ingredients into a food processor and puree to a thick paste.

Stir paste into fried onions. Add 2 more tbsp oil and cook for approx.

5 mins. Place mix in a casserole dish.

Drain lamb, pouring marinade into the casserole dish with 500ml water.

Fry lamb in batches until browned, then add to casserole dish. Add salt, cover, and cook for 45 mins. Serve with rice and naan bread.

The Long Shop Museum will once again mark the end of the season with a spectacular celebration of steam on Sunday 23rd October. Final Fling is our annual steam and activity day with full size and miniature engines being demonstrated in all their working glory. It runs from 11am to 4pm and highlights how the museum’s site in Leiston’s former Garrett Engineering Works, was a hub of industrial production with the design and manufacture of a prolific and diverse array of magnificent machines.

The Museum’s 1923 Garrett steamroller ‘Consuelo Allen’, the, will be on display and the shunting engine Sirapite will be in full steam and available for rides. Acquired by Garretts in 1926, Sirapite became a symbol of the works and a source of local pride and was renovated in recent years to become a key exhibit. Our portable engine is in the process of being lovingly restored by our Men’s Shed team so visitors can chart her progress following re-assembly earlier this year. Other engines large and small will be on display including a guest from Bressingham Steam Museum.

Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “The Christmas Day Dip is in its 13th year and it’s still such a popular event, with around 400 people lining the beach each Christmas morning ready to take the icy plunge!

There’s always such a great atmosphere at the event, not only with the hundreds of people taking part, but with the thousands who turn out to watch. A lot of people do it in memory of their loved ones who were cared for by the hospice, and all the sponsorship money raised from the event goes towards improving life for local people living with a progressive illness.”

www.ebbnflow.org.uk New-look NHS service ready to launch People from across Suffolk will be able to get easier access to help for anxiety, stress and depression along with advice to safeguard their wellbeing when a new-look service launches next month. Wellbeing Suffolk, which is being provided by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), will launch on 1 September to offer people accessible, responsive help before their problems become too great. It will expand and improve on NSFT’s existing Suffolk Wellbeing Service by offering help to children as well as adults and providing extended opening hours during the week.

SUFFOLK PHILHARMONIC REMEMBRANCE DAY CONCERT A TRIBUTE TO THE FALLEN – A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra will be playing a special programme of much-loved classics at Ipswich Corn Exchange on Remembrance Sunday. The concert, entitled “A Tribute to the Fallen – A Celebration of Freedom” has been organised with the help of the Royal British Legion and will be attended by the Mayor of Ipswich and leading figures from the County. Music includes two short pieces often associated with acts of remembrance – Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and the concert opens with Fanfare For The Common Man by Aaron Copland. Benjamin Baker makes a welcome return to play the ever popular Violin Concerto by Max Bruch.

After the interval, the Suffolk Philharmonic will play the famous “New World” Symphony by Dvorak, a piece full of excitement and hope for a bright future – and familiar to many listeners nationwide for a famous Hovis television advert. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Royal British Legion.

The service will work proactively to support people to have a good life rather than responding if they become unwell. It will also offer talking therapies to a wider range of people, including some who would traditionally be referred to specialist mental health services. Its aim is to reach as many patients as early as possible within GP practices or community settings, focusing on early intervention to help them recover more quickly.

To deliver the service, NSFT will sub-contract a wide variety of third sector organisations such as 4YP, Relate and Age UK Suffolk, to provide interventions to aid wellbeing, such as support for carers. As well as allowing the service to reach more people, this will also help build resilience within the community by boosting the funding available to the third sector.

Nesta Reeve, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead from NSFT said: “This new-look service will build on the success of the existing Suffolk Wellbeing Service, which has helped thousands of people lead fulfilling and productive lives since we first launched it more than four years ago. The service will see us work proactively with employers, councils, education providers, public health and the wider NHS to focus on what they can do to support people to have a good life, rather than waiting for them to become unwell then providing help. We will also be treating people holistically – if someone is depressed because of social isolation, for example, we will look at how they increase their connections and become more integrated, such as by starting an evening class or joining a club. From the start of the service, we will co-produce interventions with our service users so that we know they are what people want and need. By working with our stakeholders, evaluating our data, and reviewing outcomes, we will be able to make sure our service truly meets the needs of the people of Suffolk.”
