A Classic Summer Month

n a summer of predictably unpredictable British weather it was a largely kind August that played host to a number of Benefice events. Alde Valley Classics (right) drew a bumper four figure crowd - there’s a report on page 2, plus dedicated pages of colour photographs on p14 & 18.

News Alde Valley Classics Day 2015 Over 100 classic vehicles were on show at the seventh Alde Valley Classics Day on Sunday 16th August at the Riverside Centre, Stratford St Andrew. Approximately 1000 visitors attended and saw a wide selection of classic cars, motorbikes and tractors, enjoyed hot barbecued food, bacon rolls and tea and cakes, browsed book, bric a brac and plant stalls, had a go on the games and bottle stalls, enjoyed ice-cream and colouring-in and were entertained by dance group 'Jivebunnies' who also encouraged several people to join in!

'Five in a Bar' sang their melodious tunes to people inside the Riverside Centre, Radio Leiston provided all-day commentary and music and the Benhall Button Bashers played for visitors during the afternoon.

The organisers would like to thank all those who helped to make the Alde Valley Classics Day such a wonderful and enjoyable day for everyone. Over ÂŁ4000 was raised for Benefice funds.

Women's Fellowship At the next Women's Fellowship meeting in September, Jacqueline Jezewski will be talking about The Keiskamma Trust of Eastern Cape, South Africa which began in 2001 when a nursing friend asked her for help to teach the women of a very poor village in South Africa to embroider. "Look through the eye of a needle to make a difference". The Trust has become a success story with the women now recognised as international textile artists. She will be bringing along some items for sale.

Susan Gritton will sing Richard Strauss's Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs). The music is mellow, golden, autumnal, and uses the varied colours of a large orchestra to accompany with expressive refinement.

Suffolk Philharmonic shares its musicians with major London orchestras, ensuring outstanding playing. Since launching in Bury Festival in 2012, these fully professional performers have enjoyed great acclaim for their series of major concerts in Bury, free daytime concerts in rural communities and their work with children in Suffolk schools.

For Snape Maltings, conductor Leslie Olive has chosen a programme rich with Romantic power. Before introducing soprano Susan Gritton, he will conduct 'some of the most powerfully sensuous music ever written' – the final moments of Richard Wagner's sensual story of the lovers Tristan and Isolde, known as the 'Liebestod'.

After the interval, the Orchestra performs Brahms's Fourth Symphony, in E minor, his last and perhaps greatest symphony, with its vibrancy, lyricism and deep autumnal shadows.

Rector’s Ramblings What a month August turned out to be!

Village and Church fetes have been held throughout the month, many of which I had the great pleasure and privilege of opening and which has given me the opportunity of meeting so many people from our local communities, one offering me the unenviable task of judging the children's fancy dress competition, which was rather difficult due, in no small measure to the wonderful imagination and creativity of mums and dads, and at The Benhall and Sternfield show I was honoured to lead an Act of Remembrance for those who had gone before, and at all of these events it would have been rude not to sample many of the delicious delights from various produce stalls!!

The Classic Car event was a wonderful day for everyone, and a testament to the hard work of many people who put their hearts and souls into the making of such a successful day. The weather was excellent, the entertainment was fun and, yes, thoroughly entertaining, the food just too delicious to resist, and the classic car exhibits were outstanding. As this was my first experience of such an event here in Alde River, I would just like to say a big “Thank You” and “Well Done” to everyone, including all from the Riverside Centre who provided the location and many of the helping hands and resources.

There have been weddings to celebrate throughout the Benefice, and, I also became a grandmother again, to a beautiful little girl, Violet Grace.

As I write this, I am settled into an idyllic getaway in a cottage on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland, with 4 of my dearest girl-friends. The hills and glens of this part of the Cairngorms is nothing short of stunning and God's awesome creation is all around us as we look out of every window.

However, at this moment, we are all sitting round a roaring log fire (yes, the weather is a bit on the dull side this morning), still in our PJs, in a companionable contentment, chatting the hind legs of a field of donkeys, being companions, confidantes, counsellors, chastisers and comforters to one another (coffee and chocolate and hot buttered crumpets at hand) just as good friends should be.

This is the example that Jesus set before us. To be there for one another, to love and cherish one another, especially when the going gets tough, to laugh at the silly things like singing “Nellie the Elephant” together, weeping together as we reflect on departed loved one, being friends who do not judge each other, but who can, when need-be, chastise and comfort as appropriate, but who still accept each other for who they are, warts, quirks, foibles and all.

I hope you have all managed to have some quality time with loved ones this summer, and that you have been as blessed as I have been.

May God bless you and keep you, wherever you have spent your summer, and with whoever you have managed to spend it with.

Local Food & Recipes Further to our previous request for readers to send in family favourites, we have received the following recipes, from the stalwart of many a lady's kitchen cupboard – a Be-Ro book, the first of which was published in the early 1920's with the purpose of encouraging the use of a new invention – selfraising flour!

The following recipe is from the 2nd edition of the Be-Ro recipe book, published just under 100 years ago

Cheese Fingers 8oz Be-Ro S.R. Flour

Mix flour and salt and rub in the margarine.

Mix in the grated cheese and make a stiff paste with the egg and milk.

Roll out very thinly and cut into narrow fingers Place on a greased baking sheet and prick over with a

2tsp instant coffee dissolved in 1tbsp hot water Coffee butter icing 2oz butter or margarine 4oz sieved icing sugar 2tsp instant coffee dissolved in 2tsp hot water 1.

Mix flour and sugar, rub in margarine.

Stir in the egg and coffee and mix well.

Divide into balls the size of a cherry 4.

Place on greased baking tray and bake in a moderate oven (180ºC, 350ºF, Gas mark 4) for about 15 minutes 5.

When cold sandwich in pairs with coffee butter icing made by creaming the fat and gradually adding the icing sugar and creaming together, followed by mixing in the coffee.

Through the Prayer Partnership, people from across the Benefice will be coming together at certain times of the day, either at 9.30 in the morning or between 4 and 5 in the evening, wherever they are and however they can, be it at home with a lighted candle and bible, or through arrow prayers whilst ironing, washing the dishes or standing in the checkout line at Tesco's, to pray for those have requested our prayers, whether for themselves, loved ones or for situations close to their hearts.

Messy Church The morning of the last Wednesday in July saw the launch of Messy Church.

Children, their families, and the young at heart came together from churches across our Benefice for a really fun session, focusing on the story of Abraham and Sarah. The Open the Book Team entertained young and old alike by telling the story using puppets. This was followed by activities for all, which ranged from biscuit decorating to sand craft, mobiles and much more. We sang, did crazy actions, prayed and showed off our craft skills during a short service which was followed by a

Mike Brummitt We lived in Snape for 22 years in Wadd Lane until 2014 and during that time we made a lot of friends. I would like to let them know that my husband Mike Brummitt passed away on August 1st 2015 after a long, brave battle with cancer. He was a lovely, friendly man liked by everyone.

Sunshine and smiles at the Benhall Show

The fancy dress parade from Benhall Green to the showground on Benhall playing field was led by Miss Benhall 2015 Emily Whitehall and her attendants Violet Rayner and Courtney Nightingale, escorted by Dr Hilary Graham driving his 1950s Austin Healey classic car. They were followed by the Point Devis Morris and Garland Dancing group – who stepped in at short notice and did a great job – and members of the Fromus Croquet Club and the Women's Fellowship and a number of villagers.

The official opening included a thank you from President Jonathan Fox to retired Secretary George Aplin and Chairman Pat Robbins, and to committee member Christine Buttery for their services to the show, plus a welcome from new Chairman Jenny Driver. BBC Radio Suffolk's Matt Tanton-Brown opened the show and the Reverend Mandy gave a blessing.

Jenny Driver, who grew up in Benhall, said 'I would like to thank everyone for coming along to the show this year and giving their support and would like to also thank the many volunteers who helped out on the day. Numerous people have said to me that they had a magnificent time, which is what the show is all about!'

The Benhall and Sternfield Memorial Show takes place each year on the second Saturday in August on the playing field in School Lane, Benhall. This date is particularly special as the first show day was on Saturday 8th June 1946 – Victory Day – when it was held as a welcome home for villagers who had served in the armed forces. Since then the show has been a living memorial to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and in other conflicts.

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain For much of the month we have been focussing on preparations for a party to celebrate 200 years since the construction of the wall and buildings which are now The Walled Garden. Our aim was to have a party within the garden that made the most of the surroundings and which was largely decorated with plants. The sun shone as guests arrived at 7 pm and it was good to see the marquee lit up and packed with people enjoying the garden as a place of relaxation and pleasure. Mark from Leo's deli and his team served drinks and provided wonderful food and Rob played and sang from the summerhouse. Those in real party mood kept warm by dancing as the night chill descended.

We receive a weekly visit of van sales from a nurseryman called Carl – a Dutchman who is a knowledgeable nurseryman and has an excellent eye for good plants. At his nursery in Norfolk he grows a selection of plants and also buys them on weekly visits to Holland. Four months ago he bought a new van. This is an extremely large vehicle, well fitted out with all mod cons including hydraulically operated

steps for customers. While the EU makes it very easy to bring plants in from abroad, it has taken Carl four months and huge expense to get the necessary paperwork for registering the van in the UK. At least 15 years ago, we acquired a thermal printer for labels.

In its time, this was a huge advance on the old dot matrix technology. The printer allowed a 6 inch long, rigid plastic stick-in label to be printed. Labels could be printed at 4 per second and the ink did not fade due to the effect of sunlight.

Its only shortcoming has been that the print head was very vulnerable to damage. The last one I bought cost over £200 and they are now no longer made. It is now time to look at a replacement. The modern equivalent is a thermal printer with a 6 inch print head which will cost over £3000. I think I shall be looking at alternative technology, with laser printing seeming most likely.

Even during August there are still plenty of flowers out. As I wandered around in the evening sunlight, camera in hand, I was taken by the soft pink red of Crocosmia Limpopo. One of my favourite plants currently is Petunia 'Indian Summer', a long-flowering pastel mix of yellows and sunset pinks.

Trafalgar Lunch: The Royal Navy Association (Aldeburgh & Farnham Branch August Meeting The usual agenda items were covered, including Branch finances, our work in the community and welfare, with special mention of the following: The Fish & Chips Evening held at Stratford St Andrew on 20th June 2015 which raised a fantastic sum of £507.20 for The Poppy Appeal. Thank you once again to everyone who supported us and donated raffle prizes - our host Stephen Bayfield, the Broadside Boys, the team at The Riverside Centre and the Flaming Fryer from Wickham Market.

Snape Village Fete: An enjoyable day was had by everyone and £110 was raised for the Poppy Appeal.

ESTA News Snape and Tunstall have been served by a useful hourly bus from Monday to Saturday, starting at Ipswich and going via Woodbridge, Melton and Rendlesham to Snape, then on to Aldeburgh, Leiston and Saxmundham and via Farnham and Wickham Market back to Woodbridge and Ipswich. It is normally the same vehicle but runs under service numbers 64, 64A and 65.

From the end of August this service will be reduced to run every two hours and no longer has a convenient connection with trains at Saxmundham. The service is operated commercially and is not subsidised.

There will also be a Bring and Buy stall Donate Your Furniture to Help Local Hospice Care St Elizabeth Hospice is urgently appealing for donations of furniture to sell in its shops across East Suffolk. The charity has a van and team of volunteer drivers who will pick up good quality items from your home, Monday to Saturday.

Donations of sofas, table, chairs, wardrobes and cabinets are all welcome and will be resold in the hospice's dedicated furniture shops in Holywells Road and Foxhall Road, Ipswich, and Bury Street, Stowmarket.

The East Suffolk Travellers' Association, the voluntary body for local train and bus users, has written to the operator, FirstBus and to the County Council expressing concern about the cutbacks and urging that at least the service be slightly retimed so that it does make a convenient connection with trains at Saxmundham. In the medium term we hope that the service can be sufficiently promoted to gain extra business and enable it to become hourly again.

News Age UK Suffolk The Forget-Me-Not Days Out The Forget-Me-Not Days Out groups, established for those affected by Dementia, was the inspiration of Vicky Hutchinson, Dementia Community Development Officer for Age UK Suffolk. Over the past three years she has established a variety of social events around the North East Area of Suffolk.

For our main social days out you have a choice of two venues as these events are held once a month at both Aldeburgh and Framlingham. You can also attend both occasions. The next events will be held at The Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh, on Monday, 12th October and The Westbury Centre, Framlingham, on Thursday, 29th October.

Each occasion starts with coffee, tea and biscuits on arrival, allowing those attending to relax and chat to new friends or maybe reminisce with the many books and photographs available. Later on a light lunch is provided, followed by afternoon entertainment, usually musical. Before leaving for home tea and cake will be served.

At recent events we have been entertained by Dave Jay who prompted lively discussions and fond memories of the 'seaside' with his deck chair and 'knotted handkerchief' sun hat together with many other familiar props of days gone by.

The Barley Brigg Morris Dancers from Yoxford gave us a unique insight into their world of music and dance and even shared their hand-bells amongst our group members so that they could join in the fun.

Little Glemham Parish Room Committee The Little Glemham Parish Room Committee will be holding its Annual General Meeting in the Parish Room on Tuesday 8th September at 7.30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

News Headway Suffolk Headway Suffolk supports around 250 people with acquired brain injuries and neurological conditions across Suffolk and south Norfolk every week. With fully-qualified and dedicated staff, Headway helps its clients to rebuild their lives, improve skills impaired as a result of their injury or condition and live more independently.

There are two neuro hubs open Monday to Friday in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, with satellite hubs open one day a week in Haverhill, Woodbridge, Stowmarket and Mildenhall. The hubs have structured activities, such as crafts, music, fitness, cookery and IT. Clients are also able to benefit from sessions with specialists in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and counselling.

We also support many individuals in their own home and community at a time and place to suit the client, with staff given time to deliver quality care. This can include support to go shopping, access leisure activities or engage in a hobby, help with personal care, medication, appointments and money management. We also offer our unique and popular 'Brainy Dogs' project, where rescue dogs are trained to become companion dogs to clients, or we can help to train the client's own dog.

Carers also benefit from counselling, respite, a buddy scheme and being able to drop in, as well as our courses which are also run for clients, focusing on understanding brain injury, falls prevention, fatigue, stress and anger management and communication.

Benhall Harvest Supper and Harvest Festival.

This year's supper is to take place on SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER at Benhall Club promptly at 7 pm.

This is usually a lovely evening in celebration of the harvest safely gathered in. After the delicious two course meal we will be entertained by Hannah and Jo, as well as Lucy and Jon, a duo known as Honey and the Bear. There will be a small draw and the evening with finish at about 9.30 pm. Tickets are available at ÂŁ5 per person with children under 11 going free.

I would like to correct some of the points written in last month's Ebb & Flow.

Regarding Blaxhall Festival report;

Both Gordon and I enjoyed our stay at Farnham.

We had great memories of the shop and the people coming in and out. It was a happy time, and I would like to thank all for their custom, and some of whom were real characters. I think back on it all

I instigated and have organized the Art Exhibition since the late 1990's, several years before the Art Group (not Club) began. I sourced artists locally at the start, but as the exhibition has grown it has attracted artists from all over Suffolk, many of whom are professional artists, hence the high standard of work.

Members of the Art Group do exhibit. Clara, who runs the Art Group and a few of the members help set up the Exhibition and run it over the weekend, for which I am very grateful.

I organize the Exhibition to aid the Village Hall funds. When I first started the exhibition it was held in October, but I was asked if I would change the date to coincide with the Patronal Festival weekend to give visitors to the village more to see.

I would like to correct the report in the August copy of Ebb and Flow. I do indeed run the Blaxhall Art Group and encourage all members to enter their work in the Exhibition and we all help to set the pictures.

However, Joyce Iszard does all the hard work by inviting both amateur and professional artists from in and around Suffolk to exhibit in Blaxhall every year. She is the one that collects the money, produces the catalogue and makes the whole thing such a great success. I congratulate Joyce for all the hard work that she does every year.

Gordon and I had such happy memories of our time living at the Post Office Stores, but now I have to close that chapter of my life.

We both supported and watched the erecting of the new village hall, and take this opportunity to thank all who helped take it through to completion. What a lovely place it is now!
