News Snape Parish Council News At our recent AGM the Parish Council elected Malcolm Varley as Chairman and Tim Beach as Vice Chairman. There are still two Parish Councillor vacancies on Snape Parish Council. If you would like to apply for these positions please apply in writing or email by Monday 27 July to the Clerk, Melanie Thurston, 19 Stanhope Close, Snape or mel19snape@gmail.com You must have during the whole of the last 12 months have occupied as owner or tenant, land or other premises in the Parish. You must be 18 years old and over/elector of the parish. Meetings are held once every 8 weeks in Snape Village Hall. The next meeting is on Monday 27th July with a new start time of 7.00pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The Parish Council would like to say thank you to all those who helped with this years' litter pick which was kindly organised by Mike Hill. It went very well and not as much rubbish was found as in previous years.

Snape Village Hall Update Broadband will be live from the village hall from 16th June so bring along your devices and test it out at the next coffee morning on 9th July!

On the evening of Friday 10th July we will be holding a village treasure hunt so look out for the posters for more information. The event will start at the village hall and end in the pub and should be fun, so please come and join us.

Parents and Grandparents of some familiar Snape faces in the packed hall viewing the history of Snape in Film and Photographs. How the fashions have changed! Thanks go to Brian Boulton for the display and for gathering an amazing archive which will be treasured and enjoyed for years to come. The morning raised just over £146 for the hall refurbishment fund which will help towards renewing the fire exits and the front door which is our next project.

We are keen to have your good quality Bric a Brac for sale at our monthly coffee mornings. We will also be having a stall at the Village Fete on Saturday August 1st.

Snape Primary School Fun Afternoon Keep your diary free on Friday 10th July because Snape Primary School will be having a Fun Afternoon between 3.15pm and 5pm. There will be lots of stalls and games to play followed by a Grand Draw! Please come along and enjoy the fun.

News Benefice Pentecost Service at All Saints the service.

Church, Great Glemham Benhall and Sternfield Big Lunch

Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, was celebrated on Sunday 24th May at All Saints Church, Great Glemham. This Benefice Communion service was led by the Revs. Nigella Youngs-Dunnett and Derrick Stiff and our Rector the Rev. Mandy Reynolds, assisted by our Reader Dr Martin Simmonds. The congregation joined in singing the hymns loudly and the Benefice Choir sang a special piece of music as part of the service and also sang throughout communion. A special birthday cake had been baked and Mandy Reynolds was on hand to cut and serve it – along with a sparkling glass of something – to everyone who attended. It was a joyous occasion and a treat to see so many people in church enjoying

On Sunday 7th June we held a Community party 'The Big Lunch' on our Village Green - a result of an initiative set up in 2009 by Sir Tim Smit from the Eden Project, aimed at creating a UK wide annual get together for neighbours. We first heard about it from the Rural Coffee Caravan, which visits the Green once a month in the summer.

It was a wonderful sunny day. We had a marquee (thanks to Jim and Marion from The Walled Garden) and tables and chairs (thanks to the Sampsons). The Denisons provided a BBQ, Benhall Club a bar, Paul Driver and friends the music and group of neighbours made a delicious array of cakes.

There was also an ice cream van - much to the delight of the children.

This was a fun not fund raising event, and the villagers came out in force from babes in arms to several 90 year olds. Our new Play Area was much enjoyed, and the whole event voted a great success. We hope to repeat it next year.

News Women's Fellowship Our birthday celebrations were at the forefront of the June meeting of the Fellowship. Our thanks go to the Reverend Nigella Youngs-Dunnett who led the birthday service and Hannah Pemberton who played the organ for the two hymns chosen by the Fellowship committee.

There followed a short AGM where Diane Brace and Barbara Berry were duly re-elected as joint Co-chairman with the whole committee and Treasurer re-elected. Our Treasurer gave her Finance Report with ÂŁ106.92 allocated to our charity this year, the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Barbara thanked Christine and all the committee for their hard work throughout the year and Christine, on behalf of the whole committee gave a vote of thanks to Diane and Barbara. The birthday cake made by Janet Burrows was cut and distributed.

Manette Baillie gave a talk about the characters of Benhall village. Manette moved to Benhall with her husband and son in 1961 and found it to be a quiet village as only about 3 people with cars. The Chesterfield family ran Benhall Stores and there was a black barn building close to the primary school which was run by Rose Ward who sold groceries. Her husband Fred (who worked for Moore's Haulage company) repaired bicycles in the barn. Manette remembered Henry Wisby at Brook Farm who helped her when she wanted to purchase a horse.

The two builders in the village were Mr Edmunds (father of

Mary Watson) and Ted Blunden. One of the real of characters of the village was Ted Ayden who delivered the post and telegrams. Ted had a speech impediment and one of the local gentry arranged for this to be corrected. Following a motor cycle accident in France during the War, he didn't speak for a year and when he did his speech impediment returned. On his return to the village he turned his hand to anything, such as perming hair, cooking dinner for people and he was also part of the Concert Party who performed in the village hut once a year. Ted did an act with his dog Pal who followed him everywhere.

Benhall Hut as the Club was known in those days, was run by Bert Smith and was half the size it is now. There was a snooker/billiard area and a large fire where all the regulars, including Bert Smith, Alec Tricker, Bob Saunders and Kenny Boast sat. When some of the younger members asked if it would be possible to have a television in the club this was originally refused but was finally agreed, as long as the sound was turned down! In the late 1970s and early 80s pantomimes in the village hut were an annual event with Gwen Adams, a resident of Sternfield, writing and directing them. Manette concluded that she has enjoyed her life in the village and has made many friends.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 7th July at 7.30 pm and will be Music for a Summer's Evening with the Kelsale Singers.

The Great Glemham Family Service Sunday 7th June marked the revival of the Family Service at All Saints in Great Glemham. Both regular and more occasional church goers were welcomed by all. The short interactive service on the theme of 'Family' led by Carolyn was pitched perfectly for the younger crowd. The children particularly enjoyed choosing their kneelers and the lemonade and biscuits provided afterwards.

Martha (aged 4) said 'I loved singing all the songs'. Sam (aged 6) said 'The smiley faced biscuits were delicious.'

The next Family service will be on Sunday 5th July.

Behind the Hymn Love it or loathe it, each of us knows this hymnal standard. You have probably sung it at weddings, baptisms, funerals and harvest festivals. Or perhaps you remember it from Sunday school or assemblies. Either way, there can be few hymns so such universally apposite.

Here comes the confession: I must own that, until recently, I was amongst those who would groan when I saw this hymn printed on the service sheet. Oh no, not All Things Bright and Beautiful! But that was until I discovered the story which lies behind those familiar words. Since then, my eyes and heart have been opened to the brightness and beauty of this simple, children’s hymn.

evoking all of our senses, from the song of the little bird to the sight of the bright sunset, from the feel of the cold wind to the taste of the ripe fruits in the garden.

But her hymn is more than trite Victorian sentimentality.

Rather, it is a celebration of human existence, pointing to the infinite variety of ways in which we can experience the bounty of God’s creation. And so Mrs Alexander challenges each of us as we sing this hymn. Do we really appreciate how fortunate we are to have eyes to see, ears to hear, lips to taste and voices to sing? Or are we deaf to the voice of God’s calling and mute in sharing the glory of His creation? Do we appreciate our many blessings, or does our spiritually poverty mirror the physical poverty of those for whom the hymn sought to raise money?

Next time All Things Bright and Beautiful appears on your service sheet or in your hymn book, don’t groan! But rather, pause for a moment. Embrace Mrs Alexander’s challenge.

And take time to thank God for one of the many blessings in your life.

Did you know that this is no ordinary hymn? In fact, it is one of the first charity hit singles! Written in 1848, All Things Bright and Beautiful was penned by Mrs Cecil Alexander, the wife of an Irish bishop: it was to be part of a collection of hymns published to raise money to support those with visual and aural impairment.

Whilst on holiday in the Usk Valley, Wales, Mrs Alexander was struck by the beauty and richness of the world around her: those of us who have been to Wales might recognise her picture of the purple-headed mountains with their rivers running by. It is the lush grandeur of this verdant Welsh landscape which she describes in her lyrics. Indeed, Mrs Alexander draws us into her illustration of the Welsh scene by

Rectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ramblings

When you go home tell them of us and sayâ&#x20AC;Ś.....For your tomorrow we gave our today On June the 6th last month, at 1800hrs, in a little coastal town called Arromanches on the Normandy coast, approximately 100 men aged between 89 and 101 at the command of 'By the centre, quick march', set off proudly with medals gleaming and shoes bulled to within an inch of the leather to march down the main street that 71 years ago they and many like them liberated from the oppression of war and gave back the hope of freedom and liberty.

When I say 'marched' it was notable that many were now in wheelchairs and were escorted by proud family members.

This year without the media, visiting royalty and military precision which surrounded the 70th Anniversary, there was a more poignant and intimate atmosphere, even amongst the thousands of people from all around the world who came to pay homage to these men.

Following a traditional Act of Remembrance and wreath laying ceremony, (officiated at by a very privileged and honoured Rector from Suffolk, herself now officially a 'veteran'!) during the lively singing of Auld Lang Syne there were tears and emotions which compared only to those shed when wreaths were laid and salutes given to remembered friends. When you call these men heroes they will be the first to say 'oh, we're not heroes. We were only doing what we had to do'.

There were a number of services honouring these men and those who occupy that 'small corner of a foreign field that is forever England' (Rupert Brook 'The Soldier') throughout Normandy, at Coleville Montgomery, Bayeux, Sword Beach, and Ranville, but it was in the private and personal moments when a Veteran laid a cross at the grave of the mate he landed with but left behind that were the most powerful.

As the daughter of a Normandy Veteran, I am both honoured and proud to call these men my friends and I pray that as the years take their toll and their days draw to a close that their courage continues to strengthen them and that they be blessed today and always, and as said in the prayer of the Normandy Veterans, we ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, whose courage never failed.

Local Food & Recipes In response to our request for Readers to send in their favourite recipes, this recipe, from 'Family Circle' magazine, February 1987, was sent in by Judith Hargreaves, Snape, who describes it as “a cheat's delight as it's very simple. It never fails.”

Fast Lemon Meringue Slice – Serves 6.

Whisk egg whites to form stiff peaks. Fold in lemon juice and 3tbsp sugar.

3.

Quickly spread lemon curd over base in the swiss roll tin. Cover with meringue, pull into peaks with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle over remaining sugar.

4.

Return to oven for 10min.

Nutrients per serving: Calories 300, Protein 7g, Total fat 10g (saturated fat 4g), Carbohydrate 55g, Fibre 0g.

Preparation time: 10min; Cook 20mins.

Base 3 eggs 3oz (75g) Caster sugar 3oz (75g) Self-raising flour Topping 3 egg whites 2tsp Lemon juice 4tbsp Caster sugar 7oz (200g) Lemon curd 1.

To make the base, whisk eggs and sugar until trail remains on surface for 15 seconds. Fold in flour, gently.

Spread in a 9in x 13in (23 by 33cm) non-stick swiss roll tin.

Cook at 425°F, 220°C, Gas 7 for 8-10 mins until set.

News Benhall Music Day 2015 Benhall and Sternfield Ex Servicemen's Club are holding their annual music day on Saturday 11th July 2015 on the playing field at Benhall Club from 1pm till 7pm. Five fantastic live rock and pop bands have been lined up to play. Popular local bands Doghouse, Roach, Handle With Care and Remedy are featuring.

Also on the bill this year, making a special visit from their native Bagshot are comedy band 'ROY – Middle England's Finest Band'. A word from them…

Hello, we're ROY – Middle England's Finest Band. We like to write songs about lawnmowers, sheds and frozen peas. You may have seen us playing at a garden centre or at an old people's home near you. We perform in golf slacks and slippers. We like animals, and we're ever so polite. Come and join us in Middle England. We'll pop the kettle on.

Benefice Picnic The Benefice picnic on Sunday 31st May at the Riverside Centre attracted a small group of people and was held inside due to the cold and threatening cloud outside. Everyone there enjoyed a lovely spread of food – sandwiches, bites, salad, sausage rolls and drinks including tea or coffee, soft drinks or glass of wine – and a good chat.

News Benhall Open Gardens Saturday 11th July 2015

Heritage Quilters Exhibition – 16th and 17th May 2015

Benhall Open Gardens is very nearly here!

We would like to thank everyone who helped with the advertising of this event. Your support meant a lot to us, and it certainly worked as we were absolutely delighted to be able to send a cheque for £2,000.00 (two thousand pounds) to Suffolk Accident Rescue Service. Thanks also to all the people who came to see our work, to contribute to our fund raising, and to make the event such a success.

There will be 14 varied gardens for you to visit (6 new ones this year) – from small cottage gardens brimming with flowers through to highly productive vegetable plots and some spectacular larger gardens - all beautifully presented.

Please do take time to visit the gardens and get inspiration from what you see. Your visit will also raise much needed funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Benhall Church and other local charities.

Tickets are available before the weekend from The Walled Garden - £5 per person, children under 12 yrs free. On the day, tickets will be sold outside Benhall School. Prominent signs on the A12 will point you in the right direction. The gardens will be open from 1pm – 6pm.

Refreshments will be available from 12 noon until 6pm on the village green. Join us for a bacon butty (12 noon – 2 pm), tea, coffee, fruit squash, scrummy homemade cakes scones and ice creams and buy plants grown and donated by our local villagers.

Plants for the stalls can be delivered to Margaret Tinker (Woodside, Benhall Low Street) or Carol Durrant (Honeypot Cottage, Aldecar Lane, Benhall Green) or on the day to the village green. Carol is also happy to collect your plants if you give her a call.

Our open gardens events have so far raised over £5,000 for local groups and charities – help us make our 2015 event a record one!

News The Royal British Legion (TRBL) – Snape and Farnham Branch

AGM is an open meeting, all are welcome and anyone can stand for the Branch committee.

Fish & Chips Supper: Once again this entertaining event has proved to be very popular and we take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continuing support. Full details of the evening will be provided in next month's Ebb and Flow.

Great Glemham Six Charities Success The traditional Six Charities Fete was held this year on 13th June. The day was dull but the rain held off until the last few minutes while the main raffle was being drawn by Revd Mandy Reynolds, who also opened the fete. Mandy expressed delight at being able to open her first fete in her new benefice – 'Real Vicar of Dibley stuff!'

The weather did not deter the many visitors who thronged through the gates the moment 2.00pm struck. Butcher's Field looked lovely and the whole atmosphere was very much that of a village fete of bygone days. Two innovations this year were the hot dog stall and the bar, both of which proved a hit with visitors.

After all the adding up had been done a record figure of £350 was sent to each of the six charities supported this year: the Red Cross, EA Air Ambulance, EA Children's Hospice, Mind, RNLI and the Rector's chosen charity, the Army Widows' Association. All those involved in the organisation would like to thank Jenny Beaumont for stepping into the co-ordinating role and bringing off such a wonderful and happy event..

Alde Valley Luncheon Club On Tuesday 14th July we meet for our Summer Party at the earlier time of 12.00 noon and finish at the later time of 2.30pm. On this occasion we shall be serving cold gammon with coleslaw followed by Eton Mess for dessert.

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain In the central wall which divides the walled garden in two there is a horizontal redundant flue forming a cavity on the top section of the wall. A small hole in the brickwork provides ventilation for it and we had noticed honey bees going in and out. This spring the numbers gradually increased and during the warmth of midday thousands could be seen buzzing about in front of the south facing wall. Finally, one of these bee eruptions ended in a swarm which settled on a container grown Viburnum. To find them a better home I contacted beekeeper Ralph who arrived that evening with an apprentice to collect the swarm. Having put on full beekeeping apparel, they lowered the bees into a box and quickly taped it shut. 10 days later we had a repeat performance, though this time the swarm was smaller and formed in a small Pittosporum. Ralph popped the swarm into a large box with scarcely a bee flying out of it. He said that by placing it correctly near a temporary hive the bees would find their own way into their new home. There are still plenty of bees left still using the same flue.

May is always the busiest month of the year. As plants grow

they must be spaced. As days get longer and temperatures rise, there is more watering. There are two bank holidays in May and it is the busiest month of the year for sales. Running slightly short of staff of this year, we have had to work longer and harder than ever before. With sales having recently peaked, we are aiming for a quieter spell and to find time in the calm to appreciate the plants that we sell. I was always a little sceptical about Matt wanting to sell roses as many are prickly and disposed to various fungal problems. Selecting the right varieties to sell and keeping the foliage dry when watering has minimised these problems and the flowers and scents are wonderful and worth all the effort. Some of these varieties are very old and provide a wonderful connection with the past.

In mid May, a spotted flycatcher appeared in my garden at home. Concerned that the two open fronted nest boxes on my house would be liable to predation, I made another box which I screwed to a fully exposed west wall. Within a day the bird was showing signs of interest and I now have a pair using the box and sitting on eggs. Work on that part of the garden is kept to an absolute minimum to avoid disturbance. We must do everything possible to ensure the continued survival of these delightful birds whose numbers nationally have declined severely.

News Charity Wool

23rd August

Walled Garden Teas Our first Walled Garden Teas on the 17th May was a wonderful success with good weather and many visitors to the garden. Over £550 was raised for Benhall Church funds.

Many thanks to everyone who made the afternoon such a lovely occasion.

Our second teas held on the 14th June saw overcast skies and several light and heavy showers throughout the afternoon.

This did not stop a steady stream of visitors coming along for tea and cake and eventually the skies cleared and the sun came out. Towards the end of the afternoon local singer/songwriters Honey and the Bear (Lucy Sampson and Jon Hart) came along to sing and play some of their songs for the visitors. On this occasion just over £300 was raised for Benhall Church Funds. Our third and final teas are on Sunday

Snape Annual Village Fete and Fun Day The Snape Annual Village Fete and Fun Day will take place on the village playing field on Saturday 1st August 2015 from 12.30pm until around 5pm. There will be a whole range of displays in the centre ring and also stalls, raffles table tops/car boot, games for all the family and a barbeque and bar and afternoon tea tent. There will be a dog display and the opportunity to enter your own dog into the various categories with one of our local vets awarding prizes.

A professional MC will oversee the whole event and the Spectrum Kite Display Team will put on a number of stunning shows.

We are always looking for helpers on the day so if you have a couple of hours to spare then please call Tim Beach on 01728 689136.

News Life on Snape Marshes This is the second summer after the inundation of the marsh by the December 2013 tidal surge and there are no ill effects at all. The flora is growing away strongly and the reserve is looking a picture. Following the marsh marigolds and ladies' smock, we now have grazing marsh plants such as red and white clover, southern marsh orchid, yellow flag irises and water mint. We also have some nationally scarce species such as tubular water dropwort and marsh sow thistle. Many of the more interesting plants grow along the dykes, which are now being patrolled by dragonflies such as the broadbodied chaser (pictured). The diversity of plants is being encouraged by the grazing of redpoll cattle, now in its third year.

Our pair of barn owls is very visible hunting over the marsh in the evening and they seem to be finding plenty of prey chiefly voles. The male owl is significantly bigger than the female, rather than the other way round. The female is certainly the most ginger-coloured barn owl we've ever seen, with very little white.

Derek is hopeful of having a short article published by BTO. Hopefully the protracted work on the river wall along the southern side of the reserve won't take much longer. It is clearly very necessary as enhanced flood protection, but it has been quite a disruption for our wildlife - adders, grass snakes and slow worms, as well as birds and the flora that was removed. The wall is looking a bit bare at the moment, but plant species will soon take hold and this will add to the strength of the sea defence and will be one more step towards pushing the flood to the back of our minds.

The usual summer bird migrants are here - sedge, garden, reed and Cetti's warblers, chiffchaff, blackcap, whitethroat, cuckoo, hobby, swallow, swift and house martin, plus the residents like marsh harrier, skylark, meadow pipit and reed bunting. While carrying out an otter spraint survey in early May, Derek had quite a bizarre sighting of a heron on the marsh. The heron took off from a nearby dyke carrying a large rat - in its feet!
