News Life on Snape Marshes and Beyond - Spring 2015 Blackbirds, robins and dunnocks have been singing for weeks and several pairs of skylarks in the field behind us in Gromford Lane swooping and hovering. Great spotted woodpeckers are drumming on the allotment and the blue tits in the garden are chasing each other in and out of the nest box. All winter over 400 linnets have been feeding on the weed seeds in the field - a fantastic sight and a joy to listen to their twittering and chirping and watch them perching on the telephone wires. They were joined by a good number of reed buntings with their sweet song. Look out for arriving spring migrants such as chiffchaffs and black caps.

The redpoll cattle will soon be back grazing on Snape Marshes.

Two new gates will be installed in the middle of the reserve.

This will further divide the marsh into compartments to enable us to control the grazing and get the mosaic effect of vegetation we are aiming for. The trailer load of green hay from Darsham Marshes spread on to one of the meadows last July contained hundreds of wildflower seeds and we are hoping this year to see yellow rattle, ragged robin and even more Southern marsh orchids.

Two thirds of the river wall has been strengthened and work will resume when the weather permits. The contractors estimate that it will take 5000 tonnes of material to complete the job.

An otter was recently spotted at close quarters from the first dyke along the Carnser running at right angles to the marsh.

Although signs of otter activity are evident in the form of spraints and worn tracks, it's uncommon to actually see one.

2014 was a bumper breeding year for barn owls in Suffolk which is great news, given the disastrous results from 2013 when a relentless icy blast decimated the number of short tailed voles, their preferred prey. Many starved to death and most female barn owls failed to gain sufficient weight (340g) to be in good enough condition to breed, so missed a year. Last year our resident barn owls raised four healthy chicks.

Walled Garden Teas The dates for the Walled Garden Teas are 17th May, 14th June and 23rd August. We have a large following of visitors who come along not only to enjoy the tea and cake but to wander around and look at all the wonderful array of plants, shrubs and garden furniture on sale. The Teas are held to raise funds for Benhall Church.

News Women's World Day of Prayer On Friday 3rd March about 40 women gathered in All Saints' Church, Great Glemham for a service written by the women of the Bahamas. The church had been decorated in a tropical style, with palm trees, lush greenery and bright flowers. The aisle was covered with 'footprints' and those taking part in the service were dressed in bright colours.

The theme 'Do you know what I have done for you' was based around Jesus washing his disciples' feet. We considered how we could show the same sacrificial love to others and wrote answers on small foot-shaped cards. Food that would be eaten in the Bahamas was served as refreshments after the service. Next year the service will be written by the women of Cuba and will be held on the first Friday in March in Badingham.

YHA Blaxhall Garden Rescue Day The day dawned bright and sunny on our first ever Garden Rescue Day at YHA Blaxhall and following an interview with Lesley Dolphin on Radio Suffolk and a piece in the East Anglian Daily Times, volunteers came from far and wide (well Woodbridge and Ipswich!) as well as from Blaxhall. Bushes were pruned, borders dug and hanging baskets planted. The reward for all this hard work was a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. Thank you to our Blaxhall helpers Ray, Naomi and Sue who did a grand job and also to Marion at The Walled Garden, Benhall, who was so generous to us and donated lots of lovely plants.

Violin Virtuoso

Benjamin first picked up a violin aged three and was already in the public eye by the age of seven – including having played with Nigel Kennedy, who recommended he apply to the Yehudi Menuhin School in London. Benjamin gained a scholarship and his family then moved lock stock and barrel to live in UK. He claims that the only CD his family had in the house, was Nigel Kennedy's Four Seasons. He has played in the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and other major venues across the UK and Europe and New Zealand. Benjamin was selected for Young Classical Artists Trust representation at the YCAT final at The Wigmore Hall in 2013.

They played Kreisler – La Précieuse in the style of Couperin; Tartini – Violin Sonata in G minor, The Devil's Trill; Debussy arr.

Heifetz – Beau Soir; Ponce arr. Heifitz – Estrellita; Saint-Saens arr. Ysaye – Caprice in the form of a waltz.

Benjamin also played the Bruch G minor Violin Concerto with the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra, giving a very powerful performance last November.

Benjamin Baker, the young New Zealand violinist, played exquisitely at Glemham Hall, home of Philip and Raewyn HopeCobbold, for a fund raising event for the new Suffolk th Philharmonic Orchestra, on Thursday 12 February. About 100 people attended.

He was accompanied on the piano by Petr Limonov, who won first prize at the Nikolai Rubenstein piano competition in Paris in 1998, which launched a career in concert-giving in Europe, Russia and Japan.

Village Voice: interviews with interesting people from around the benefice Pat Gilbert from Yoxford As readers know from last month, Pat Gilbert was the Head Keeper on the Glemham Hall estate and recently retired after 25 years service there. Pat was born, just after the war, in Rendham where his father was a horseman who worked with Suffolk Punches. After school Pat did a 5 year painting and decorating apprenticeship although to this day he “doesn't know why”. At the age of 20 he went to work for Rentokil as a ratcatcher because of the good wages and the company van.

About this time he made friends with several gamekeepers in the Blythburgh area and started spending most of his free time with them; he “used to mess about with them, they taught me a lot, it wouldn't be allowed now”.

After 3 years he took a job doing the night shift at a poultry factory in Eye. He didn't like it but he stayed for 21 years because the money was good and he had a young family to look after.

And then, in his early 40s, he heard about an opportunity to work as a beater at Glemham Hall which would fulfil his “love of the outdoor life”. He knew it meant a “massive pay cut but that the job satisfaction would be fantastic”. He didn't hesitate.

Soon after Jack and Andrew Bayfield (head and under keeper respectively) left and Pat took over as head keeper. He remembers it being “exciting but scary”. His first challenge was dealing with the “unbelievable rabbit population” which took 5 years to bring under control.

Nowadays he says it's the badgers which are the biggest problem. Many people don't realise how much harm they do by eating hedgehogs and destroying bees' nests. But his views about some so-called pests have mellowed: “I look at a fox in a snare now and think God what a lovely creature you are. I think you get softer as you get older.” Similarly he describes buzzards as “lovely birds” although he knows only too well the utter devastation they can cause in a pheasant pen.

Pat looks back on his time at the Hall with enormous fondness and his devotion to the Hope-Cobbolds whom he regards as friends is absolute. “Raewyn is a fantastic lady.”

His main occupation now is as an unpaid deer warden for the police. He is frequently called upon to deal with casualties which are usually the result of traffic accidents and his job is to despatch the injured animal as humanely as possible. He has witnessed some very gruesome scenes but he “enjoys it because every job's different” and he “gets an adrenalin rush” when the call comes.

Pat's a bit concerned he won't have enough to do in his retirement because his wife's list of jobs that need doing in the house is only 27 pages long. If he does have any spare time he'll be playing in just about every bowls tournament in the east of England. And he still does the odd stint picking up on the estate; he can't help it, “it's in his blood”.

Rector’s Ramblings

April, and Easter is almost upon us. yellow fluffy chicks and floppy eared rabbits are everywhere.

The shops are full of Easter eggs and pictures of

Easter, the most important time in the church calendar and even more important than Christmas, is a time to rejoice after the reflections and self-denial of Lent, the solemnity of Holy Week, the darkness of Good Friday and the void of Holy Saturday. Easter, the Day of Days when we celebrate the good news of life eternal for all faithful Christians and proclaim whole heartedly 'Alleluia, He is Risen'. It's the time when we give thanks for the dawn of a new day and a new life in the Risen Lord. The bible tells us what happened that first Easter and in the days and weeks afterwards, but we can only really imagine what his disciples thought or felt. Maybe Peter's reflection on events might have been something like this….

'He was back, back in the land of the living, just when we'd given up hope. Three days he'd been in that tomb. Three days of despair as the reality sunk in. Did it all really happen? Yes it did. Three days of despair for us left behind. We couldn't take it in. We kept expecting to wake up and find it had all been a horrible dream, a dreadful mistake. But the reality was that it was true. He was gone.

It was an end to everything - our plans, our dreams, our hopes. We gave up everything for Him…and now He was gone.

But we were wrong!! We should never have doubted because He was back. Mary had met Him in the garden. And then, He appeared to friends on the road to Emmaus. And one day, suddenly like a rush of wind, there He was, back in that upper room with us all. He was back in the land of the living. And so were we, our human frailty in deserting Him forgiven, our faith in Him re-born, our hope renewed. Life was beginning again!'

And remember - Easter isn't over once Bank Holiday Monday is over and people are back at work. Easter isn't finished when the chocolate eggs are eaten and the shiny foil they came wrapped in is thrown way. The good news is that Easter lasts for an eternity, because that's what Jesus promised and won for us through His very own agony and ecstasy so that we can proclaim with confidence He is Risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia!

News Women's Fellowship Ann Osborn from the Coffee Caravan was our speaker at the Women's Fellowship on Tuesday 3rd March. The Coffee Caravan Project was started in 2003 by Rev Canon Sally Fogden who whilst manning a helpline in Suffolk with other volunteers for the Farm Crisis Network, realised that something was needed to ease the stress of rural isolation.

She had an idea for a mobile community café and information centre and the caravan purchased for this purpose and taken into rural Suffolk was successful. This encouraged a funding application and the Rural Coffee Caravan Information Project was born.

During the summer months the Caravan visits many rural communities. It has been coming to Benhall Green for about seven years and has a regular clientele. The information provided by the Coffee Caravan has helped many people gain access to benefits, services and information they need. The Coffee Caravan also helps foster community spirit by bringing people together in a relaxed social atmosphere. The coffee donated by a local businessman and the cakes made by volunteers are all free.

After receiving a grant of £150,000 they have now bought a campervan which visits village halls so that coffee mornings can offer support and information to any emerging village group such as a toddler group or over 60's club all year round.

The Coffee Caravan often takes along representatives from voluntary organisation such as AGE UK and local councils.

A record breaking 70 people packed Gt Glemham Village Hall on Fri 13th March to watch the moving documentary Pistol Packin' Mama, which told the story of an American B-17 bomber crew based at Framlingham (Parham) Airfield in WWII. Tim Brett from the Airfield Museum and Chris Pratt form the BRO Museum were on hand to answer questions and they each gave a short talk about their respective museums.

Everyone enjoyed the spam sandwiches in the interval!

need an hour or so roasting at a high temperature (around 190 degC) and fifteen minutes rest before carving. Adding anchovy to a leg of lamb will complement the flavour very well. Make approx. 10 inch-deep incisions in the flesh then stuff half a salted anchovy or a blob of Gentleman's Relish in each and add half a clove of garlic and a stick of rosemary to one of the slits.

My wife was asking about spring lamb the other day and it suddenly occurred to her that 'spring' lamb bought for Easter lunch couldn't have been born that same spring otherwise we'd be eating newborn lambs, or lambs a few weeks old.

Thanks to its associations with the Lamb of God, lamb has been eaten at Easter since early Christianity (and even before that, with the first Jewish Passover), but it's hard to tell when 'early spring lamb' became so desirable for Easter in this country. If you have a good butcher who understands the nuances of lamb rearing and handling, 'spring' lamb, or 'new season' lamb as I prefer to call it can be a real treat for Easter.

In fact, this 'spring lamb' is born the previous October, November or December and is reared to be ready in time for Easter eating. Whilst some traditional breeds like the Polled Dorset or Dorset Horn are naturally inclined to lamb in the autumn, most have been specially managed for autumn lambing. After the lambs are born the ewes will be fed concentrated diets to keep their milk production high and the lambs will be fed almost exclusively on milk, which gives spring lamb its very particular milky flavour. The lambs will be finished on the first new grass of the season, getting no more than a few weeks outside.

This way of rearing lambs for Easter eating does not always, in my view, produce the most flavoursome meat, but its distinctive mild taste is popular and very tender. It is a real pleasure to be able to quickly cook cheaper cuts that traditionally need to be slow-cooked – such as neck cutlets or neck fillet. The alternative for a longer cook would be a hogget. Hogget is any lamb that is over one year and under two years' old at slaughter. Well-husbanded hogget born in the spring, suckled on its mother and grazed on the succulent, fresh grass of summer can be truly delicious for Easter lunch. What it lacks in tenderness it makes up for in flavour: all those extra months foraging around on grass, clover and a few wild flowers helps develop a delicious layer of fat lacking in younger lambs.

A rack of new season lamb is always popular, as is a slowercooked shoulder. Leg is big and impressive and from a young lamb will cook moderately quickly. An average 5-6lb leg will

Benhall Show The Benhall and Sternfield Flower Show takes place this year on Saturday 8th August. Everyone in the surrounding area, friends and visitors alike, are invited to enter the competitions in the marquee. There is no entry fee and we have increased prize money and 22 cups to be won! For vegetable exhibits there are the usual classes for beans, tomatoes, potatoes, onions etc and one for something of your choice that that is a little out of the ordinary. Or try a veg box with 5 different varieties. There are a few changes in the schedule for flowers with two classes for sweet peas – single variety and mixed varieties. The dahlias are divided into two classes - double (inc. decorative, cacti, etc) and single/collarettes.) We have also added an arrangement of fragrant flowers. In the handicraft section there is a new cup for art donated in memory of Jo Dunham.

Snape W.I. March Meeting Having concluded the business side of the meeting, some excitement followed as a name was drawn from a hat to elect a member who will attend the W.I Centenary Party at Buckingham Palace. Kathy Hough showed her design for the front cover of the September Centenary edition of the SEFWI news and Tina Mabey gave a great talk on massage and the importance of stretching as part of our daily exercise programme. Our next meeting is on April 1st at 7.30pm. This is an open meeting so all visitors welcome. Price is £4. The Talk Topic is 'A Year in the Wildlife of RSPB Minsmere' by Alex Bass.

News Update from Snape Village Hall and the George Formby Night 2015 Mystery of the Missing Chocolates!!

The hall painting, thanks to Ray Foreman and Tony, was finished in time for a wedding blessing and reception at the hall on 14th February. The bride and groom decorated the hall with bunting and flowers and had a wonderful afternoon.

We have had very positive feedback and everyone has been pleased with the colours.

Maggie Scorer and her golden retriever Oscar joined us at our monthly coffee morning. Maggie is cycling around the coastline of Great Britain with Oscar in his own special trailer, raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma research and the stillbirth and neonatal death charity SANDS. Our coffee morning attendees donated £62 towards Maggie's £25,000 target. Elaine Warmingham gave a floral demonstration, creating a spring basket with red tulips tinged with yellow to match the bright yellow narcissi she mixed with a variety of 'scavenged' foliage. She also created a trailing piece using items purchased from the bric-a-brac table and gave a lecture on plant names and their history. £215 in total was raised for the village hall refurbishment funds with £153 raised from the Coffee Morning and £30 from the Golden Key Quiz Night.

The raffle prize of a large box of Thornton's chocolates won by John Warmingham had by the end of the coffee morning mysteriously disappeared. If anyone has any ideas where it is, please let us know.

St Andrew’s Little Glemham AGM

Little Glemham Parish Room Committee will be holding a 'Georges' celebration on Saturday 25th April at 7.00 for 7.30 in the Parish Room. The show will feature a George Formby tribute act and live 60s music and will include a raffle. Age UK Suffolk Forget-Me-Not Days Out At February's event in Framlingham, Linda Lancaster gave a talk and slide show about her adventures journeying with her horse and carriage throughout Great Britain. The next events will be held at the Westbury Centre, Framlingham on Thursday 30th April and at the Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh, on Monday, 13th April. Snape Parish Council Annual Parish Meeting This will take place at Snape Village Hall on Monday 20 April at 7.00pm (not the usual 7.30 start). Our guest speaker will be the new Chief Executive of Aldeburgh Music, Roger Wright. We will also be given a final report from Angela Skinner who will be retiring this year as Head Mistress from Snape Primary School.

Reports from village organisations will also be received including Parish Council news and positive proposals for the traffic calming in the village, made possible by donations of £5000 from Hopkins Homes and village fundraising which will help to pay for Vehicle Activated Signs. Elections will be taking place in May so come along to the APM to find out how you can be involved in your village and become a Parish Councillor.

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain The consequence of ordering 24 pallets of compost is that fairly soon an articulated lorry will arrive in our small car park.

When the lorry is empty, a good driver can spin it round to face back up the drive before reversing a little to allow room to allow our forklift to unload the pallets. Our compost arrived on Monday lunchtime and with the nursery closed to the public, Simon was able to unload in an empty carpark.

March is the main month for potting - much of which is done on our Javo potting machine. Adjustments have to be made to it each time the pot size or plant plug size is changed. Once the machine is set and running properly, the focus is on keeping the plants correctly labelled. The small batches of plants change frequently and the labeller's job can be monotonous, yet they must be dextrous and pay attention to make sure the correct labels are inserted. During my stint at labelling, I found it exciting to see the new varieties we have this year: Petunia Kermit Piggy with green and pink flowers and Petunia Marvel Beauty Raspberry, a sharp pink with yellow centres - two varieties that took me back to a visit at the trial grounds near Spalding where we saw these and a

whole range of other inspirational plants.

In the spring, one of the frustrations of employment is when new staff, after interview and appointment, email the day before starting work to say that they have changed their plans. We have therefore had a brief shortfall in our quota of part-time staff but the gap is now filled by an aspiring horticulturist working on her RHS theory.

We have embarked on landscaping round our summerhouse.

An area of turf was removed by turf cutter and another slice of soil taken away to give a deep enough area to lay ground cover fabric which will be covered with hoggin and pea shingle. This will make a serviceable hard-standing area on which we can place tables, chairs and a good selection of plants in big pots.

News The Royal British Legion (TRBL) – Snape and Public Access Defibrillator hy Farnham Branch Farnham with Stratford St Andrew Parish Council has decided March Meeting The main emphasis was on our first major fund raising event of 2015 our Fish & Chips Supper which will be on Saturday 20th June 2015 at the Riverside Centre, Stratford St Andrew. We are delighted to welcome back to the Riverside Centre on Saturday 20th June 2015 7pm for 7.30pm Stephen Bayfield and The Broadside Boys. Tickets cost £12 and there will be a licensed bar and raffle. All profits go towards our contribution to the Poppy Appeal. Benhall Open Gardens 2015 Benhall Open Gardens is now in its third year, having previously raised over £5,000 for local charities and organisations. This year's event will be held on Saturday, 11th July 2015. More than 12 gardens varied in size and style will be open for view, including some new ones. A refreshment tent will be situated on the village green and there will be a plant stall. Entrance to the gardens is £5 per person, available in advance from the Walled Garden nursery, and on the day outside Benhall School. Refreshments are available from 12.00 noon and gardens are open from 1.00pm to 6.00pm. All proceeds will be donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Benhall Church and local charities and organisations.

Smalls, Letters & Leftovers Ra er belatedly, I would like to ank all e people who have been so kind to me following my accident and hospital stay in January. I have received so many cards, flowers, gifts and visits and feel very ankful to live amongst such a caring community. Thank you all.

Celia Jarrett My boyfriend and I visit Suffolk as often as we are able to and love exploring the beautiful countryside and churches near to where we stay.

We visited Blaxhall Parish Church with my copy of the book 'Ask The Fellows Who Cut The Hay' by George Ewart Evans in hand to refer to, admiring the Church from the outside and comparing it to the watercolour plates by David Gentleman.

When we entered the church we were welcomed by a lovely lady and gentleman preparing the Church for Lent and tidying up. They were so kind to us and very helpful, it was heartwarming.

A gentleman in the churchyard who also chatted to us and was very knowledgeable!

Would you perhaps be able to print this letter and pass on our thanks? I recall them saying that they live in Blaxhall. We look forward very much to visiting again when I've finished the book!
