News Rev Mandy's 1st Benefice Quiz th

Friday 13 February at the Riverside was certainly the place to be. The occasion was the first Benefice-wide activity organised by the Rev Mandy Reynolds as part of her wish for greater interaction between the different parts of the Benefice. 50+ people organised into 8 teams competed in a quiz composed of 6 rounds of light-hearted questions plus table-top picture identification sheets. This combination, orchestrated by Mandy as Quiz Master, certainly taxed the brains present. The whole event was lively with much laughter and enjoyment, aided by an intermission for an excellent fish & chip supper delivered piping hot and freshly cooked from the van in the car park. Mandy's plans include a Benefice picnic in the summer and for October an evening of 'Alde River's Got Talent'. Keep a look out in Ebb and Flow for news of these upcoming events and please join us for a lively time with friends and acquaintances from across the Alde River Benefice. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and making new friends, in a happy and relaxing environment.

The Demise of Home Wood, Benhall It is not unusual to listen to the sound of chainsaws coming from the woodland which surrounds the Walled Garden Nursery and I am always concerned about the welfare of the wildlife and especially the birds that live within it. In my time here, we have observed in the garden lesser spotted woodpecker and hawfinch which are now very rare, good numbers of marsh tit which is on the red list for scarcity, frequent nuthatches and a few tree-creepers. It was therefore very disconcerting to hear that a felling licence had been granted by the Forestry Commission for yet another round of felling in Home Wood. This last occurred in 2008.

Within the wood are a good number of old hardwood trees, none of which are particularly fine specimens and many with dieback, but it is these trees which provide by virtue of their decay, nest and roost sites for birds and a food source for the bugs that live on the decaying timber. Unfortunately, it is the hardwoods that have commercial value and are more susceptible to removal. My enquiries about the felling revealed that there was concern about trees falling on the wall. Trees always present a risk but the potential liability must be weighed against the benefits they provide. Over the years, the Home Wood has been thinned to such an extent that we are becoming more and more exposed to winds. The surrounding wood contributes much to the peaceful feeling of the garden and I care about it deeply.

It is unfortunate that the current round of felling is during snowdrop time. George Storey told me that in the 1920's it was part of the Sunday ritual to walk from the Lodge to church through the picturesque bulb wood. The deep ruts that occurred when Dom Valley Timber cleared up after the great storm of 1987 have never healed and it will be interesting to see what steps are taken to clear up the current mess caused by the heavy tractors. A walk around the wood to the north and west of the nursery reveals very little of value left. On the side of the north-west wall is a big stand of spindly sycamore of little value. I was originally informed that the purpose of the felling was to protect the wall. The strongest gales blow from the south and west and it is the wall on the west side of the garden that is most vulnerable, as was shown by the uprooting of my huge eucalyptus. If the

News genuine intention of the felling was the protection of the wall then these trees would have gone first but they remain untouched. Removal of the hardwood species seems to have priority, with areas cleared to provide space on which these trees will fall. As for replanting, small stands of oak planted 7 or 8 years ago are dominated by tall sycamore seedlings, their removal low on the list of priorities. One of the first trees to go on our eastern boundary was a thin sickly oak. There are very few decent hardwoods left and my hope is that the last few veteran trees will be spared.

These veteran trees which have been growing for hundreds of years are part of our heritage - once they are gone, they are gone and with it the wildlife that flourishes in them. I was told it will move elsewhere – well where exactly? I have spoken to the Forestry Commission (who granted a thinning licence), the Tree Officer for Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. It would seem there is little enforceable law to protect woodland and we are therefore at the mercy of the owners and their appointed managers. The fate of the woodland lies in the attitude of these people - either it's a resource full of wildlife, the ownership of which in these days would make a great deal of people very proud, or it's a commercial liability.

I have no doubt that some of this woodland has very little value and is ripe for replanting, but I am fearful for its future.

There has been a massive decline of farmland birds, and agricultural change and the loss of the dairy industry is affecting house martin and swallow numbers. For all of us living in the countryside, there is a huge potential benefit to be derived from wildlife: it greatly enriches our lives. Who doesn't enjoy watching the barn owl fly over the meadows at Low Street or watch the little owls on the telegraph poles at Blaxhall? Do you really want the birds on your bird table to be reduced to blue tits, great tits and the odd robin? How many people have regular song thrush visits? I was told of a not too distant memory of a cuckoo that laid eggs in a Dunnock's nest on a climbing hyrdrangea on a Benhall house. Some chance now. It's time we looked after what's left.

Passover Meal at St Mary's Church, Benhall Following the success of this event in 2014, we will again be celebrating a Passover Meal in the schoolroom at Benhall Church (7 for 7.30pm).

We will be using ideas, words and customs from the original Passover Meal, a meal that Jesus participated in throughout his life, but it will be a Christian adaptation which Jesus himself began as he purposely imbued this meal with new meaning. If you would like to know more about this tradition, do join us on the evening of Maundy Thursday (April 2nd).

Snape Carol Singing Thank You Thank you to everyone who helped raise £350 for the East Anglia Children's Hospice as a result of the Carol Singing around Snape before Christmas. Special thanks to the Scotts and other members of the stalwart 'Snape Six' who sung every evening as well as to everyone who made a donation.

EACH works across East Anglia and cares for children and young people with a life-threatening condition and also supports their families. 150 Suffolk families received some sort of help from the charity over the last year. EACH relies on voluntary donations for the majority of its income and the generosity of the people of Snape is very much appreciated.

Local History George Thomas Rope of Blaxhall

Spring Steam-up

George Thomas Rope [1846-1929] was the eldest son of George Thomas Rope [1814-1912] and his wife Ann Pope [1821-1882]. His father, known as “Old George” was a farmer, corn merchant and small ship owner who also had business interests at Iken and Orford. George gained his formal education at Ipswich Grammar School and pursued a deep affection and interest in the natural world around him.

The Long Shop Museum in Leiston will reopen in style by launching the 2015 season on Saturday 28th March with a fantastic steam and activity day from 10am-5pm.

There will be large and small engines in steam, including our very own 'Sirapite' shunting engine. The 'Works Band' (alias Leiston Royal British Legion Band) will be performing around the museum site during the day. Costumed 'Interpreters' will be leading a variety of hands-on activities including making a nail box, doing some washing the Victorian way and creating a plaster copy of an 'engine part' in a sand mould.

Tea, coffee and home-made cakes will be available throughout the day, with home-made soup available at lunchtime. Come as you are, or come in Victorian/ Edwardian dress to join in the spirit of the event.

George showed early signs of being able to draw and paint, which was encouraged by his parents. After finishing school, George spent a year in London studying art under the landscape and animal painter William Webb. He suffered from a heart condition which did not allow him to pursue strenuous activities and resorted to a life studying natural history and devoting himself to drawing and painting. He travelled throughout East Suffolk with his pony and trap, capturing countryside scenes and producing sketches, drawings and painting flora and fauna and was especially interested in drawing and painting horses - including the Suffolk Punch.

George was a collector of natural history objects and added to his natural history collection when he visited Holland, Germany and Norway. He also compiled information and illustrations for his book entitled 'Country Life and Sounds' published in 1915.

The Rope family resided at Grove Farm Blaxhall and George and Ann Rope were the parents of Ann, George, Henry, Hannah, Richard, Ellen and Edith. Several of the children were talented artists.

George exhibited with the Ipswich Art Club from 1878-1914 and also at the Royal Academy. Although George was in poor health he painted outdoors, taking his equipment with him, which was often a struggle, especially in his later years.

At the age of 83, whilst travelling in pony and trap near to Langham Bridge, his pony and trap ran over an obstacle which caused the trap to overturn. George was seriously injured and th died shortly afterwards on the 12 December 1929. His legacy, passed down to us of a talented artist and observer of nature, are the drawings and paintings he created and these can be seen at the Christchurch Mansion Museum, Ipswich.

works on the radio which she had not previously known. She “fell head over heels with his music”. She started attending the Aldeburgh Festival and was “bowled over by the Snape Maltings and the surrounding countryside”. Her love affair with this part of the world had begun and in 1981 she moved into a modern house in Benhall which she chose for its large windows and fantastic light.

Jenny was a war baby and spent her early life in the home counties. After grammar school she attended Watford School of Art where she had “3 years brilliant training in graphic design”. Her father was a professional artist and served as a camouflage officer during the war; she's sure she inherited his artistic genes. Following art school she did various jobs until one day, while she was working in the graphics department of an industrial design firm, she was asked to redraw some postage stamp designs. It was totally unexpected and “new and exciting and very, very interesting”.

Her studio is in a spare bedroom and faces south. She is still extremely active artistically and her output has gone in many different directions. She has illustrated two books about 'Mackerel the Travelling Cat', designed several exhibitions at the Maltings as well as the Snape village sign, and she edits and illustrates the Suffolk Wildlife Trust newsletter. Her philatelic work continues on a slightly different path because she now produces first day cover envelopes each of which is She continued this for a couple of years until 1965 when, on handpainted to order and signed. The following year another exciting opportunity arose. She was asked to go to the Pitcairn Islands to do research for the Crown Agents. International travel was very different in those days and it proved to be quite an odyssey. She flew to Auckland via New York, San Francisco and Fiji and then sailed for 8 days to Pitcairn where she stayed for 10 days. The whole trip lasted 3 months because there were stopovers at every connection point. At the age of 25 she had the most wonderful adventure and made “many lovely friends”.

Rector’s Ramblings As I look out of my window, the sun is shining, the snowdrops are blooming in abundance, and the daffodils are budding, just waiting to burst into bright yellow trumpets.

As we are now well into Lent, I thought I'd ask…how is your Lenten observance going? If anything, what did you give up? I gave up chocolate and chips, something which is very, very hard for me to do. Everywhere I go there seems to be an abundance of chocolate - rows and rows of Easter goodies in the supermarkets, especially at the checkouts!

A brilliant selling strategy but how tempting those glossy wrapped treats are

When we can't have something we want it all the more. It might be just chocolate, but the temptation can be to think 'well, just one packet of buttons won't hurt…and who's to know?' The temptation can be too strong but don't be fooled, because believe it or not our willpower can be strong too and of course there is one person who will know when we fail, because we can't hide anything from him!

Lent is also a good time to make the effort to read our bibles more conscientiously. There will always be something in this amazing book which can inspire us to stay strong. For example:

Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip, he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you, the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm, He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

The last two lines of this psalm give me enormous reassurance, that when things are getting tough and I can't rely on my own human weakness or vulnerability, the Lord is always there just waiting for me to lean on him.

How wonderful is that?

News Have you got a good Recipe to share with Ebb and Flow?

Ebb and Flow would like to receive details of some excellent recipes from our readers - reliable recipes, ones that have stood the test of time, or just newly discovered. We know that there are many excellent cooks across the Benefice and we should like you to help us for two reasons: firstly, to share recipes with our many readers over the months. Secondly (one of Rev Mandy Reynolds' suggestions), to assemble an Alde River Benefice 'Cook Book' that we could have nicely printed and available in the Churches, for the many visitors and also raise some funds for the Benefice.

So, do you use recipes handed down from your Mother or your Granny? Or from a long-out-of-print cookbook? Or from a recent TV programme? Lots of us probably have an old BeRo book in the cupboard, or a battered copy of Mrs Beaton, usually with some handwritten family recipes carefully conserved between the pages. What we are seeking is recipes for what we might describe as 'good grub', soups, starters, main dishes, side dishes (such as how to make superb Yorkshire puddings, or perhaps fabulous roasties, or how to make leeks interesting), and of course puddings – chocolate or something more delicate - or perhaps a long lost suet pudding which really does the business in winter. Ebb and Flow will acknowledge you as the source, unless you wish to remain anonymous, and we shall do our best to publish everything which is sent in. Women's Fellowship Report The ladies were welcomed back to Women's Fellowship on February 3rd and our speaker for the evening, Lyn, Manager of the Leiston-based C.A.T.S. (Coastal Accessible Transport Service) was introduced. C.A.T.S. has been our chosen charity for the last year.

Lyn informed us that they offer three types of transport - Dial a Ride Service, Suffolk Community Car Services and Wheels within Wheels. Dial a Ride is a local door-to-door minibus service available to anyone who cannot access a conventional bus service. Journeys require advance booking and the fare is similar to ordinary bus services. Travel vouchers can also be used. The mini buses are also available for group use during the evening or at weekends, subject to driver availability.

'Wheels within Wheels', operated by volunteers, is a service for those with wheelchairs. Passengers contribute on a

mileage basis (usually 35p-45p per mile) for local shopping, visiting relatives or friends, local visits to the doctor, dentist or optician. Plenty of prior notice is required and journeys are booked on a first come first served basis. Suffolk County Council provides a subsidy for this service. The Community Car Service is available for those who have no private car who are unable to use public transport. The service can be used for any number of reasons - local shopping, visiting friends and relatives, local visits to doctor, dentist and optician, journeys to work or school, day care, hospital or clinic appointments. Passengers also contribute on a mileage basis for this. There is a partial subsidy for this service from Suffolk County Council.

The other services C.A.T.S are involved with are the Suffolk Link Blyth and Alde bus services where the drivers are paid.

This covers the area between Lowestoft and Saxmundham and the villages in between, providing a connection with bus services or taking you direct to a destination when no buses are available. It is also possible to connect to local train services at Darsham and Saxmundham. Again bus passes can be used.

C.A.T.S runs 20 vehicles, employs a staff of 35 and has over 80 volunteers in this area. It has developed since the first bus went on the road in 1998 and is a non-profit making business with charity status that relies on donations to keep it going.

Many of the ladies showed interest in the services C.A.T.S offers and Lyn answered many enquiries. Diane thanked her for her very informative talk and presented her with our cheque for £250 for C.A.T.S. The next meeting is on 3rd March at 7.30 pm when our speaker will be Ann from the Coffee Caravan. Please bring along your £ 8 subscription for the year if you have not already paid.

Local Food & Recipes the simpler the ingredients the more you'll taste the chicken.

Start with onions, celery and carrots softened in butter in a pan, then add you stock and any veg you have, with a potato, and you'll have a good simple soup. For something very clean and easy, try adding a bit of chopped chilli, a squeeze of lemon and some noodles to a pan of hot stock. It'll make an easy lunch.

Nigel Slater's stock-flavoured spuds Layer thinly-sliced potatoes and onions in a shallow buttered dish. Season as you go. Pour over hot stock to cover. Bake in a low oven until the onions have softened and most of the liquid has been absorbed. This is great with cold meat.

Leftover chicken pasta Leftover chicken, cut into small chunks 2-3 handfuls frozen peas 1 chopped onion 1 chopped garlic clove 2-3 rashers of streaky bacon or pancetta, diced 1-3 tablespoons double cream Seasoning and parmesan to serve

We eat roast chicken most Sundays. But a good one is expensive. Can you help me make it stretch through the Fry bacon in olive oil til crisp. Lower head and add onion and garlic and cook until soft. Add peas and splash of water and week? then boil. When pan is almost dry, add chicken and heat Sarah Elliott, Saxmundham I'm so pleased you asked this question. Yes, good chickens can seem expensive compared to the barn-reared or nonfree-range alternative, but it's just a matter of adjusting our expectations. It makes to much sense to buy the best chicken you can reasonably afford and then use the leftovers to get at least another couple of meals out of it, even if it feels like a chore. (And yes it can be tempting, in a busy week, to chuck out the carcass with whatever scraps are left on it, I've done it myself.) If, every time you finish your roast, you get into the habit of picking off the leftover meat, plating and fridging it, then putting the carcass into a pot for stock, you'll be very thankful for the time, effort and money saved as the week marches on. Here are some easy and quick recipe suggestions to get you started.

Simple stock recipe for soup If you've got a lot of leftover meat, it's a good idea to freeze your stock once you've made it so you can save it for another time. Otherwise you may find that famine follows feast…

Put your carcass in a full pan of cold water with a few garlic bulbs, 1-2 halved onions, a tomato, 2 carrots and a bit of celery or leek plus any herbs you might have. Season. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3-4 hours, skimming fat off as necessary. Sieve then store.

This stock can be used as the basis of almost any soup, and

through. Pour in cream and bubble until cream has reduced.

Season and add to pasta, topped with parmesan.

All-in-one chicken noodle soup This will use up the carcass and leftover meat in one hit.

Useful if you're not good at having leftovers hanging around your fridge!

Put the carcass and shredded leftovers in a pan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Add a chopped garlic, a piece of grated ginger, 1-2 finely chopped celery sticks, seasoning and a dash of soy sauce. Simmer for 20 minutes. Take the carcass out of the pan and discard. Add a chopped sweet red pepper or veg of choice, and some chopped mushrooms. Cook for 5 minutes then add some noodles (as many or few as you like), cooking til soft. Serve with chopped spring onions.

Other ideas to try include chicken fajitas, risotto with chicken and ham or peas, and a good salad – how about chicken with avocado and feta; or chicken, orange, couscous and watercress. Leftover chicken can be stored in the fridge under clingfilm or in a sealed container for three or four days, and in the freezer for four to five months (it's safe to freeze it for longer, but the meat will become increasingly dry.) News Suffolk Family Carers Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity that provides information, support and guidance to Family Carers around Suffolk. We have been offering our services for over 25 years.

One of the things we have learnt during that time is that people caring for another person at home, perhaps a family member or friend don't usually see themselves as a Family Carer. They just see it as part of being husband, wife, father, mother, daughter, son, friend etc. Because of this, it becomes easy to forget the importance of your own health and wellbeing as all of your physical and emotional effort and energy is spent on looking after that person as well as others who may be involved - such as siblings. You may feel that your own needs do not matter during this time, but in order to provide care and support you do need to keep your own batteries charged.

In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be working with our hospice colleagues in Suffolk to offer an information and support programme for those people caring for someone nearing the end of their life. There will be a series of five informal sessions that offer information and an opportunity to reflect and gain support from others in a similar situation. The programme will be offered around the County with the first ones starting end of January. The aim is to improve the Family Carer's own situation and that of the person they care for.

Update from Snape Village Hall We set to work clearing the hall in early February in preparation for the painters to start work. Peter, Janet and Aprile took the old curtains, rails, posters and notice boards down and it was amazing how much bigger the hall suddenly looked. Ray Foreman and his team (Tony!) started painting on Monday 9th February and Victoria Blunden helped with the colour schemes. Many thanks to them all.

Tony set to work on the ceiling first and the transformation

began. On Wednesday the new hot water boiler was installed in the kitchen. By our Thursday coffee morning we had one coat of the new paint on the walls. Tony painted the men's toilets during the coffee morning as the children from Snape School had agreed to sing for us and we didn't want to cancel.

The coffee morning got off to a slow start but by the time the children arrived at 11am the hall was full and the new water boiler was working well, making life much easier for Alison and David in the kitchen. The children sang their two songs beautifully and finished off with 'Happy Birthday to Grandad' as Hadyn and Kirsten had told their teachers it was Peter Bunn's birthday the following day. The children enjoyed biscuits and a drink and were each given a raffle ticket by way of a thank you. There were 3 lucky winners!

We also welcomed Reverend Mandy who thoroughly enjoyed the morning and didn't go away empty handed as the sales team managed to sell her two fantastic framed works of art to hang in her new home! Thank you to everyone who helped make the morning such a success, to Mo for the generous bag of supplies and to the Wednesday evening ballroom dancers who set the room out for us after their class. We raised a further £158.21 towards the village hall refurbishment fund. The generous donation of £32.50 from Inga and the Golden Key quiz teams boosted our total to £190.71. The upstairs room was also in use that morning for a tap dancing lesson which increased our takings for the day.

The curtains are in the process of being made by Josef Wondrak from Austro Designs. I am assured they will be ready for 14th March when we are planning a celebration 60's/70's Disco. Tickets are on sale from Snape Village shop @ £6 each and from Caroline Beach. Please bring your own refreshments and we will supply the nibbles.

News Alde Valley Classics 2015 The Alde Valley Classics Day is on Sunday 16th August from 11.00am to 4.00pm at the Riverside Centre, Stratford St Andrew. On the day there will be a display of classic cars, motorbikes and tractors; stalls including books, produce and preserves, bric-a-brac, bottles and plants; hot food served throughout the day; tea and delicious home-made cakes; an ice cream stall and games and entertainment for the young and not so young to enjoy.

We will need lots of help to make Alde Valley Classics a successful day. We need people to join our team and help organise the event. We need people to help with the vehicles and car-parking. We need people to bring along ideas about what we can sell on our stalls and how we can obtain them!

We need help producing food for our visitors and would love to have more help in the kitchen.

On February 4th members and visitors attended our monthly meeting. After the business content was completed we listened to a very informative talk by Tim Passmore, Suffolk Police Commissioner. Tim shared with us the role that he plays in the Suffolk community. This was the first time he had spoken to a W.I. group - a daunting task, but one that he accomplished very well. Our next meeting is on 4th March at 7.30pm at Snape Village Hall. Tina Mabey will be joining us to speak about sports massage for the young and not so young.

News Age UK Suffolk - The Forget-Me-Not Days March and at the Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh, on Monday, 9th March. For further information or to make your bookings Out Anyone who has been diagnosed with dementia, along with their Carers, will receive a warm welcome at the Forget-MeNot days out which are held regularly at Aldeburgh and Framlingham. The day starts with coffee, tea and biscuits on arrival, allowing you to relax and chat to new friends or maybe reminisce with the many books and photographs available. Later on a light lunch is provided followed by afternoon entertainment, usually musical, and before leaving for home, tea and cake will be served.

Ron Smith from Great Glemham recently entertained the groups with his vibrant delivery of Robert Burns' famous 'Address to the Haggis' continuing the theme with a demonstration of Scottish dances by a team of dancers from his Great Glemham Thursday night class. Many of those attending also joined in, dancing the 'Gay Gordons' and other simple dances.

These events are held, once a month at both Aldeburgh and Framlingham. You can attend one or both but please book your place, to assist with the catering numbers. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who will ensure that you are well looked after. Age UK Suffolk representatives are always in attendance to assist with information or to address any concerns that you may wish to discuss in confidence.

News Retirement of Game Keeper Pat Gilbert Pat Gilbert, Head Keeper on the Glemham Hall Estate, Little Glemham, retired at the end of last shooting season after some 25 years of loyal, committed and dedicated service firstly, as a beater/brusher/picker-up with former Head Keeper Jack Bayfield, then as Under Keeper to Andrew Bayfield, finally assuming the Head Keeper's role in 2002.

Well known for his control of the beaters' line – 'flag 'em up…..!!' and light heartedness with the 'guns', his passion, work ethic and commitment to the countryside and knowledge of wildlife will be sorely missed. He is a true 'Suffolk Boy' through and through.

His two unbeatable end-of-season shoots were his thanks to the band of loyal, stalwart helpers who have supported him over the years, including his volunteer assistant Keith Thompson together with his wife Julie, daughter Kate and son Sam. Pat and his wife Jennie (a great book-keeper and expert truck driver out lamping) will be spending his retirement (on the bowling greens of England) at their home in Yoxford with their springer spaniel Poppy and black Labrador Daisy and of course family.

With a big thank you, we wish them and their family all the best for the future.

Funds Raised from Snape Youth Club

Last year I was contacted by the bank saying they were going to make the accounts dormant. As there were 3 signatories on the account I thought this would cause problems should we want to access this money in future, a total of £341.41.

We made the decision to close the account and transfer the funds to Snape Parish Council to hold in trust to make the funds more easily accessible, to be used only for the young people of Snape Village i.e.to set up a new youth club or similar project. The Clerk will open an Ipswich Building Society Account and transfer the money into it, until such a time that the young people of Snape Village need to fund an activity or new youth club.'

We felt it appropriate to let people know that these funds are available and if anyone has an interest in doing something for or with the young people of Snape contact the Parish Council.

Paddington Holiday Scheme

For those of you old enough to remember we used to have a youth club in the village - the Snape Friday Club which was originally set up by Reg & Iris Tozer with the help of D. Alderson, Helen Barker & Marion Walker. The youth club ran for a number of years before it became unviable to run and 2008 was our final year.

The organisers of the Paddington Children's Holiday Scheme would like to thank everyone who came to our recent Quiz Evening in Great Glemham Village Hall and helped to make it such a joyful event. We are delighted to be able to announce that the evening raised over £600 to help provide Suffolk holidays for disadvantaged London children.

We had received around £200 from a previous village youth club and had used this to buy equipment. Once the club closed we sold any equipment we could and placed all the monies into the bank account for the youth club, hoping that new volunteers would come forward and want to maybe restart. This has not been the case and the account has not been used since 2008.

Please note that the Family Bingo Evening originally scheduled for Sat. 21st March has been postponed until later in the year.

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain Since I wrote my usual article for Ebb and Flow, I had hoped to divert more of my attention to getting the nursery ready for spring but a tree was felled across our phone lines on Saturday, taking all three lines out - despite Matt having informed the contractor Mr. Berry about them on Friday. We are reliant on phone lines for financial transactions and their failure creates a lot of additional work.

Once the first benches were built for the retail area, we had to move them out of the door. They are not unmanageably heavy, but to move 11 presented a challenge. I was pleased and relieved when Charlie dismantled a Danish trolley, leaving just the base and wheels. Without even lifting the benches, we tipped them on their side onto the trolley base, pushed them down the new concrete path and straight out of the door. Lying flat again, they rested on the handles of a two wheeled trolley and were pushed to their final position on laser levelled slabs, where they will be completed. A bit of

ingenuity saves work.

Oil being cheaper this year than last is a phenomenon that I can scarcely recall. I have decided to help out the poor oil producers by using a little more oil and have increased the temperature of the prop house a few degrees to improve the results of our seed sowing and to reduce the electricity bill for the bottom heat on which the trays of seeds are placed. The first geraniums are in and potted and our own cuttings of unusual varieties are pushing out roots.

Marion and Matt have hatched a scheme to sell roses. The plan is to stock a range of climbers, ramblers and popular shrub roses with a few species ones. Matt ordered the bare root plants from a supplier that he had dealt with before and the plants we received looked really strong and Charlie and Simon potted them into 4 litre deep pots. The best, of course, is to come - emerging bright young shoots followed by most beautiful and often scented flowers.

News Music in Snape for Palm Sunday On Sunday 29th March - the fifth Sunday of the month - the usual Snape Choral Evensong at 6.30pm at St John the Baptist

church will be replaced by a performance of the Victorian choral masterpiece 'The Crucifixion' by Sir John Stainer. This will be sung by the Alde River Singers – a group of local singers and visiting friends from all over the country. The two main soloists are ex-cathedral singers and will be supported by

other voices for a variety of solos. The organist will be Geoff Lavery. Bill Gloyn will be conducting.

This piece, despite its rousing and emotive music, was not designed to be a concert performance. It has stirring hymns for the congregation to join in throughout. Rather, it is a meditation on the days before Good Friday, ending with the death of Christ on the Cross. This is a subject that has been the inspiration for untold numbers of works of art, music and literature over the ages. Stainer's concluding hymn puts it in the context of the Resurrection on Easter Day when all were showed God's love.

The Singers are always very happy to welcome new faces, especially those who have sung the work before – even if many years ago! The rehearsal on the day starts at 15.30 for the men, who have some special chorus work, with a full rehearsal at 16.00. After a break for tea at 17.30, the performance starts at 18.30 and lasts for just an hour.
