Growing up on a farm on the east coast, Emerie shared in the toils of his large family garden. As one of eleven children, home canning was a yearly tradition in his home, not only providing nutritious foods at a busy table, but acting as an avenue for the creative palate of a budding chef. Emerie’s belief in the value of “fresh-picked” foods makes his partnership with Bernardin a natural. An alumnus of Kraft Foods – Emerie worked both as a Food Technician and a Consumer Relations Associate – he is an expert in the tastes of the Canadian palate. His own catering company specialized in dietary-needs menus, and after a proud 3-year service as chef for the Royal Canadian Air Force, Emerie has mastered the efficiencies that preserving can provide.

CHUCK HUGHES

Cactus Club’s culinary vision is led by Canada’s only Iron Chef, Rob Feenie. Chef Feenie is part of the Cactus Club Test Kitchen, where he permanently resides as Food Concept Architect. From France to North America, Chef Feenie is revered for his mastery of French cuisine. Throughout his career, he has worked alongside various world renowned Chefs including Emile Jung, Charlie Trotter and Jean-Georges Vongerichten to name a few. Chef Feenie has received the Relais Gourmand Designation and was awarded the Traditions et Qualite & AAA Five Diamond Award in 2003. In addition to publishing three cookbooks and starring in New Classics with Chef Rob Feenie on Food Network Canada for five seasons, he is most noted for claiming the lucrative Iron Chef title after defeating Chef Masaharu Morimoto on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Today, Vancouverites affectionately refer to him as “Our Iron Chef”. All of Chef Feenie’s dishes are clean and simple in construction, allowing premium ingredients to take the lead role.

If there's one thing Chuck Hughes has always loved to do, its play with food. And whether his mother Francine likes it or not, she definitely had a thing or two to do with it. From the time her curious son insisted in being enrolled in a cooking class at the age of 8, it was clear he was crazy about the kitchen. And fifteen years later, when Chuck was on the fast-track to a successful but potentially passionless career in advertising, Mom was the one who suggested he turn his affair with food into a full-time relationship. In 2006, Chuck and his two best friends, Tim Rozon and Kyle Marshall, opened their own place, GardeManger. Set in a 125 year-old stone house in the heart of Old Montreal, it became Chuck's playground; a vintage crab-shack cum underground club where he could put his magical spin on comfort food, and indulge his fantasy of creating decadent meals served up to his favourite rocking soundtracks. Last spring Chuck invited the world into Garde-Manger's kitchen with the premiere of Food Network's Chuck's Day Off, his first original television series. Chuck's Day Off airs Thursdays at 4:30pm.

LARRY THOMAS Larry Thomas is an actor most recognized for his Emmy nominated performance as "The Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld. Larry has been an actor for twenty-five years and is a veteran of dozens of Films, TV shows and hundreds of theatre performances. Recently Larry finished shooting the film, Postal and was seen on Arrested Development, Hot Properties, Threshold, Scrubs and a Lexus commercial as a crazed pre-Bugsy visionary selling the idea of Vegas. As far as theatre goes, last year Larry completed a thirty-five city, one hundred and forty show production of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple-Female Version starring Barbara Eden, and rumour has it that it's not over yet.

FoodNetwork.ca/Chuck Larry grew up dreaming of being on the big or small screen. Larry kept these fantasies to himself until he met a girl. Enrolling in the same theatre classes in a pitiful attempt to get a date, Larry fell in love with acting.... well for the first year the teachers told him he had no talent. But, being incredibly stubborn and somewhat inspired by a nineteen year old kid in his acting class named Kevin Spacey, Larry stuck with it. Within a year they admitted there was some talent there and now they have his picture hanging in the theatre lobby.


B.C. CHEFS' ASSOCIATION PRESENTS MASTER CHEF COMPETITION Black box competitions are considered the most challenging because the food content of the boxes is not revealed prior to the event. The chef has to accept the challenge of devising a main course from the Black Box by using only the foods in the box plus items he may choose from the limited on-site pantry. Once the box is open, the chef has 35 minutes to create a meal.

EAT! GARDEN As the media has significantly increased the awareness of the "Eat local food movement," many Vancouver city residents have taken to their own backyard gardens and community gardens for fresh produce and herbs. To reflect this surging interest, anchored by a central display of the recently unveiled Romses Harvest Green Project, the EAT! Garden Pavilion will showcase products and services for both beginner and savvy gardeners. As well, on behalf of Garden Wise Magazine, Heather Neilson will be making presentations on gardening tips.

Competitors will be judged by culinary professionals, on composition, creativity, correct preparations, service practicality, taste, proper utilization of ingredients, presentation and consistency. Distinguished members of the BC Chefs Association will be acting as the official judges : judging coordinator Chef Michael Pinter CCC, Executive Chef, Seton Villla, Chef Thomas Dietzel, Dietzel ChefEmployment.com, Chef Sylvain Cuerrier CCC, River Rock Casino, Chef Kris Kabush Kabush, Executive Chef Hart House Restaurant, Chef Boban Kovachevich and Corporate Chef Executive Hotels. Dudson China's David McIlwraith will once again act as the Master of Ceremonies and will be joined at times by Citytv hosts Dawn Chubai and Kyle Donaldson as celebrity commentators. B.C. CHEFS' ASSOCIATION The British Columbia Chefs' Association, under the leadership of current president Chef Donald Gyurkovits Gyurkovits, is dedicated to the education of both junior members and the upgrading skills of regular members. As well, annual scholarships are given out to deserving students who distinguish themselves in the culinary field in schools and institutions throughout the lower mainland. Money for these scholarships is raised through fund raising activities and through generous corporate donations. Other activities that this Association takes part in include Annual Christmas Parties, Summer Picnics, the President's Ball, Apprentice Competitions, Local and National Conventions, Culinary Salons and other events to publicize the work of the professional chefs and cooks in British Columbia.

B.C. CHEFS' ASSOCIATION CHOCOLATE COMPETITION 28 29 30 The B.C. Chefs' Association is proud to host and sponsor a Chocolate Competition taking place on May 28th and 29th. The Competition is open to all culinary professionals, bakers, pastry chefs and advanced students, studying in related fields. The theme of this year's chocolate show piece is: Go Green Globally Chocolate Showpiece Competition runs on May 28th. Bonbon Praline & Plated Chocolate Dessert Competition runs on May 29th.

B.C. CHEFS' ASSOCIATION CULINARY SALON COMPETITION 28 29 30 The B.C. Chefs’ Association is proud to host and sponsor a Culinary Art Show and Competition taking place on May 30th. The Show is open to the public and media, bringing valued exposure to the industry and Association. The Competition is sanctioned by the CCFCC and its rules and is open to college and high school students as well as novices and professionals.
